Leo couldn't answer that for reasons known to him thought Melvin was interested to know if his younger brother had feelings for his wife. Why was he even calling her his wife in the first place when he didn't even care about where she and his son were?
Leo: what do you want to hear Melvin, that I love her?... See I'm not like you who doesn't respect boundaries. You who sleeps with another woman on the eve of your wedding while an innocent girl is waiting at the alter, you who drug a woman and put in her a baby without her consent.. you who....
Lorna: shut up mr. Preacher man.. you who nyenyenye look at you meddling into your brothers affairs, do you even have a wife of your own leave alone a girlfriend?
Jade: ask him again.
Leo: no I don't, but atleast I'm not going around sleeping with women. You are wicked and I hope you get to pay for everything you have done to her.
Jade: oh poor thing, get out of my house leo. You have overstayed your visit.
Leo looked at Melvin one more time and walked out. He got to ndegwa's car and got Benta's clothes that had been in the back seat then dropped them in his car and drove off..
Ethan had been taken to Lorna's sister Magdalene. She knew that Melvin had a son but she never got a chance to meet him because Benta and the rest of the family never got along. Magdalene lived like thirty minutes away from where Melvin and Benta lived so when the police took him, she had specific instructions to take him there.
The female police and two others were part of the deal to throw Benta out of her house and when Lorna came and found Benta alone in her house, plans to evict her were underway. Jade was evil and she knew that the police station she went to was the nearest police station and Benta would go there to report. Not that she knew she would but isn't that where all the oppressed people go? Jade went there first and had a word with an officer and told her to expect Benta, she needed the lease to the house and she knew Benta would have to present it to the police to show that she was the rightful owner of the house. Jade didn't care, once those certificates and the lease got into her hands, she would have a say.
At the police station, not everyone knew the deal but it happened that the officer that Benta reported to were the same officers that Jade spoke to and that's why they were quick to arrest when Jade twisted the entire story. They arrested all of them but Jade had organized for people to go after Benta because she knew the officers would set them free anyway especially if Leo got to hear about Benta's arrest. Jade didn't care much about melvin because him, she could easily twist his arm.
While at Ndegwa's place, I did rounds searching the house for more clues as to why my mother's photo's could have been in that house. That, I didn't even tell Leo though I hoped he would tell me if Ndegwa was alive because he was the only one that could answer my questions.
The house had no any further leads even though inside the wardrobe I found some female clothes and shoes but I had not seen my mum in any of it. Did Ndegwa have a wife and if he did where was she?
Magdalene had just washed Ethan, fed him and left him in the bed when she got a call from Lorna asking how the baby was doing and even though she was nervous to have Ethan around, she loved the boy. Magdalene had children but now they were old. Two of his sons were married and one was in campus. Magdalene only gave birth to boys so taking care of Ethan wasn't going to be a problem.
Lorna: you will keep Ethan there and no one is allowed to see him except me and her mother. Not even Melvin can know where he is.
Magdalene: okay. As long as the police won't arrest me for k********g.
Lorna: police, don't worry dear, those ones can easily be bought and you know me. Money is not a problem.
She said that and all this while she was locked in her room away from Melvin and Jade who were in their room having issues too. That family was a total mess and what was hard to understand was what interest Lorna had in all these. Wasn't she the same one who insulted Jade for not having children and accuskhg her of bewitching her son and controlling him with charms, how did they even end up in the same team commiting crimes together?.
Melvin was laying on the bed as Jade wiped him clean so that he could rest. Melvin looked mad about something but Jade didn't seem to care because she was also upset with the fact that Melvin called Benta his wife.
Melvin: can you go easy with that thing, my body is still in pain.
She gave him a long stare then continued with whatever she was doing.
Melvin: I told you not to tell Benta anything until it was the right time and you had to throw her out of the house and take away her son.
Jade: correction, our son. Benta has no son and she has no house either. How could you but this house and put it in her name?
Melvin: because we owe her that. We did everything wrong Jade, we got her to carry our child without her consent and we took away all the chances of her being happy in a real marriage with a real person. The least we could do is leave her the house since she nolonger has a home in the orphanage.
Jade stopped whatever she was doing and shifted all her attention to him.
Melvin: what's that look?
Jade: why do you talk like I'm the bad person here, everything we did to her was an agreement between both of us.
Melvin: except the part where you took away the baby and sent thugs after her and me too. That baby is still very young Jade, he needs his mother.
Jade: I am his mother!
There was an awkward silence between them then Jade got up and took the basin she was using to wipe Melvin's body to the bathroom and came back with a towel and a lotion she picked on top of the dresser and sat on the edge of the bed wiping his arms and chest.
Jade: I want to ask you something..
Melvin looked at her as if giving her the go a head to ask whatever she wanted to ask but he didn't speak a word.
Jade: in this fake relationship you have been having with her, did you develop feelings for her?
Melvin looked away and didn't answer her.
Jade: did you fall in love with her?.....
Leo got back and found the house and the look on his face told me that he did not succeed at whatever had taken him to his brother's house. I got up from the couch and sat up and watched him walk in and sit on the other side of the sofa then for a moment he seemed like he was in deep thoughts.
Me: aren't you going to tell me what happened?
He looked at me then got up and came to sit next to me.
Leo: Ndegwa, I can't tell what happened to him. I only found his car where it had been parked and your clothes were lying on the back seat.
Me: my son?
Leo: Ethan was not in the house. I don't know where he is and I'm not sure Jade is going to make it easy for you to have him back.
When I heard that, I grew tired but I was not going to give up my son without a fight.
Me: so I should just let go of my son?
Leo: do you know how you got pregnant with Ethan?
Me: I don't care if I drank him in soup, he is my son. I carried him in my own womb Leo and I will never give him up, that Jade will have to kill me first.
I got up and picked my phone from the seat and hurriedly walked to the door and before Leo could catch up to me I was out of the door. I was going to confront Jade I mean she couldn't steal my happiness from me, I was not going to let her. I was not going to let her have my baby and I was not going to let her have my husband as well.
Melvin and I had been through alot. I remember one time when Melvin's was so sick, he had migraines and by that time his bank had been frozen after his partner accused him of stealing from the business so the account was frozen for investigations and we literally had nothing. I was pregnant with Ethan and I was eight months on.
Melvin became sick in the night and he was holding to his head and shouting in pain. His sickness caught me off guard then another thing is we had no money. I had never seen a man literally cry because he was in so much pain. I called his mother and she insulted me saying I should finish the work I had started of finishing off his son. She blamed me for Melvin's account being frozen and she said I was the reason her son was not sending her money. Lorna cursed me and said even if I was the last woman on Earth she would rather her son marry a mad woman.
I called everyone I thought of calling to lend us some money to take Melvin to the hospital but who did I know, Betty, Lorna Leo and Jade. Jade told me she was in a fix and didn't have any money on her and Betty, Betty I didn't call because of the shame I had, how could I start asking her for money when she knew I was married to a millionaire. The only person left to call was Leo who came through for us. Leo came that night, helped his brother to the car and we drove to the hospital.
On getting there, leo did the running around to check his brother into the ward because the doctors said it was not just the headache but he had pneumonia that needed to be treated immediately.
I was worriedly walking around with my big belly wondering what next. What if my husband died, where was I going to start.
Leo came back and found me seated at the waiting area and I was so emotional that night after everything Lorna told me. He didn't understand my reasons for crying and I didn't want to talk ill of his mother.
He put his arm around me and comforted me then he decided to take me home after convincing me that I could not stay at the hospital. Leo stayed the night with me and the following morning he dropped everything and drove me to the hospital...
Leo: where are you going Benta?
He grabbed my arm just before I could get inside the cab.
Me: I'm going to get my son.
Leo: he is not there. It's dangerous for you to go there alone.
Me: then come with me.
I was in the cab by the time I was saying that and he had no choice but to follow me. The thing is I was going to that house with one mind set. I was going to kill Jade and I was prepared for everything after that.
Leo: this is a stupid decision Benta.
Me: which one, marrying your brother, you should have told me the damn truth. You should have told me that your brother was just an animal in human skin.
Leo: I warned you about your so called friend, you should have listened to me. Jade was bad news and she still is.
Best friends are trash. That's what I learnt from everything Jade did to me. I was coming to learn that for every trip Melvin went to, Jade was right there by his side. He was careful enough not to get caught. I never washed lipstick or powder on his shirt, such a smart cheat.
The ride was not that long maybe a ten minutes drive from where Ndegwa lived, we got out, leo paid the cab guy and I walked to the house and didn't even know, of cause I wanted to catch them off guard and the interesting part of all the drama I was about to cause was that I had no weapon. Leo ran after me calling me and when I got in, no one was in the living room so I went straight to the kitchen and grabbed a knife. When Leo called me, he attracted everyone's attention and they all left the rooms they were in and assembled in the living room and the knife in my hand was indication that I was ready to kill.
Me: where is my son?
Lorna: what are you doing with that knife?
Me: Jade, where the hell is my son.
I asked again ignoring Lorna and when I moved in towards Jade she took steps back.
I went past them to check my bedroom and see if Ethan was there but he was not. With the knife in my hand, no one could come at me. Not even Leo.
Me: where did you take my baby?
Jade: he is not here, he is safe.
I walked to where Melvin was seated and and grabbed his neck and put the knife by it.
Everyone was now very alert and freaked out.
Me: get up Melvin.
Lorna: leave my son alone you witch. Leave my son alone...
She tried coming at me and I pointed the knife at her and she stood back. Jade was speechless and yeah I expected that from her.
Me:( to Leo) grab his keys.
He walked past them and went to get Melvin keys in our bedroom as I dragged Melvin out of the room and he obediently followed, I mean who could move around with the knife on his neck. Was I really going to kill him, I don't know but I knew he was the only leverage to getting my son.
Jade: you think you have won?
Me: not yet. You have no idea what winning looks like. Let's go Leo..
Leo grabbed Melvin's arm and we left the house with me guarding him with my knife. This was just the beginning. My son had to show up and I didn't care who went down for it...
