BROKEN EPISODE FIFTEEN

That came as a surprise because the police are the last people I expected to see. Did they know that I'm the one who killed Magdalene, I knew Jade had run her big mouth to the police and I had to think of a backup lie or else I would be on a queue serving beans in prison with her soon.

Me: officer I have a young child and a sick husband.

I said pointing inside the house and when the police peeped, he saw Melvin seated on the couch with the neck brace on his neck.

Officer: that is not our concerns. We are doing our job madam. You are needed at the station to record a statement on where you were yesterday at around 5:30 pm..

Melvin had gotten up from the seat and walked to the door where we were after seeing the police officer. He opened the door and came face to face with them.

Melvin had some sort of influence in people and when he spoke they always listened. He was well known for his business deals and the police knew who he was because he was one of the biggest names in the business world.

Melvin: hello sir.

Officer: hello, you are the owner of the house?

Melvin: no sir. This is not our house, my wife and I came here for a vacation....

Officer: vacation

The officer said taking a keen look at him probably noticing his neck.

Melvin: I got into an accident and my wife decided to bring me here, a different environment so that I don't get depressed.

The talk was interrupted by the car driving into the compound and everyone's attention shifted to Leo who got out of his car like he had not caused a commotion at all.

Leo walked up to us and because he found all of us outside he stood there listening to the conversation.

Officer: and who is this man?

Melvin: the care taker of this place. We had told him we were leaving so he needs to check the house if everything is intact.

Leo looked at Melvin like he didn't know what he was talking about but he knew that Melvin ought to have said that because we were in trouble.

Leo: yeah, and sorry for coming late. I got caught up.

The officer looked at me then at Melvin.

Officer: well, you will still have to come with us to the station because you have been mentioned in a case concerning the murder of Magdalene.

Me: okay...

I said looking at Melvin then making my way to the police car and Leo offered to come with me.

Melvin: no I'm the one who should go with her.

Leo: stay here and take care of your son. This is your mess and I will try and fix it, and I'm your caretaker...really?

He said in low tone then left.

While at the airport, Lorna changed her mind about going home and waited until the car that had dropped her there left then she got a taxi as well. She was not going to be defeated by a low class woman and it was bad anough after she heard about her sister's death and for her, she immediately knew that Benta had something to do with it. It had to be when getting her baby from Magdalene but how did she even find out she was with him.

Lorna checked into a hotel and once there, she called Jade but her line was not going through. That was stupid because she had seen Jade get arrested earlier. Lorna didn't care about Jade's arrest otherwise she would already have sent a lawyer to her. When Alice called her crying over the death of her mother, she got so devastated that she thought of doing something about it.

Jade was going to jail for Magdalene's death but her, she was going to deal with Benta and she knew how but what was her intentions really?

No one knew. She was just a cruel mother in law and besides her sister Magdalene, no one really loved her.

She got her phone and scrolled through it while seated on her bed in the hotel room and she called Melvin who received almost immediately.

Melvin: mum u can't talk right now.

Lorna: why not.

Melvin: Benta has been arrested and is being taken in for questioning.

Lorna: what did she do?

Melvin: she is accused of having been there when Magdalene got shot.

Lorna: was she?

Melvin didn't answer that.

Melvin: I have to go mum, we will talk later.

She ended the call and took a deep breath then tapped the phone in her hand and made another call after scrolling through the phone again.

Lorna: hello is this Lude.

Lude: yes, what do you want?

Lorna: I have a job for you.

Lude: I'm.listening.

Lorna: there is someone I need you to get rid of.

Lude: who,...the lady we were after the other day?

Lorna: yes, she has been taken to the police station, chances are that she will not be locked up but I want her dead.

Lude: we tried that before.

Lorna: that time you did not have orders to kill her this time you do.

Lude: okay... I need double the cash you offered last time then I will get to the job done immediately..

Lorna: I'm paying half now, the other half when he job is done.

Lude: by the end of today, you will be having a funeral..

She ended the call then sent him a photo of Benta and laid back on the bed smiling to herself.

Lorna: no one reaps where they did not sow. No one will enjoy my son's wealth but me. Everything he has is mine.. all mine.

Ethan started to cry and Melvin went to get him from the bedroom. He got him from the bed and hosted him up then carried him in his arm and looked into his eyes. That was the first time Melvin was really having time with his son because the rest of the days he was just too busy for him.

Melvin: hey young man...

He said ticking his neck and he smiled and threw his arms in the air. Melvin took him to the living room, got some milk and gave it to him in a baby bottle then they went to the living room and sat with him watching him take his milk.

We got to the station and was helped out of the police Landover and matched inside the police station. I saw Leo outside making his way towards us but I was taken to some room he couldn't access so he ought to have been waiting for me outside...

Officer: sit!

He commanded and I did on a chair then right across the table, he did.

Officer: state your name.

Me: Benta

Officer: Benta who?

Me: Benta Yolanda.

Officer: do you know why you are here?

Me: for questioning I guess.

Officer: where were you yesterday evening at around 5:30pm?

Me: I was with my husband and son. Like he said, we were on a vacation.

Officer: do you know Jade?

Me: yes I do.

Officer: how do you know her?

Me: she is my husband's wife.

Officer: Jade has accused you of having been the one who put the gun in her hand after shooting a woman that goes by the name Magdalene. Do you know her?

Me: yes I know Magdalene, she was a good woman, she is my husband's aunt and her daughter is a close friend.

Officer: I see...

He kept writing stuff down but I didn't care. No one else could prove I was at Magdalene's and the good thing is after playing the recorded conversation, I took the recorder with me.... If I had not, Jade would win the case against me because Alice would confirm that she gave me the recorder then I would end up having a motive to kill Magdalene. The only people that would sell me out would be Leo and Melvin but Leo wouldn't and as for Melvin he already backed me up when he lied to the cops that we were on vacation, why would he even lie to the cops after he called the cops on me?.

The officer continued writing and all that time I was silent thinking of the next lie should the ones I told not having been enough.

Officer: you said Jade is your husband's wife meaning she is your Co wife?

I didn't know how to answer that. When Melvin married me, I was the only wife but well, since I said she was my husband's wife, I had to keep up with that lie.

Me: yes.

Officer: how is your relationship with her?

Me: I wouldn't say it is good. She hated me because I was able to give our husband a son and she couldn't give him any.

The officer paused abit and looked at me.

Officer: so what reason would she have to kill Magdalene who is her mother in law's sister?

Me: I honestly don't know officer. The last time I checked, no one wanted her in that family and Magdalene's attitude towards her was worse. Maybe she just got provoked beyond what she could take.

Officer: okay, I will take your finger prints then you can go but the investigations are still underway. You are not allowed to fly out of the country and be ready to avail yourself Incase you are needed here again

Me: yes sir..

He got up and left me for a few minutes then came back with the ink to take my prints and shortly after he let me go.

When I got out, Leo was still waiting. He had been leaning on his car making a phone call and when he saw me he ended the call and came towards me.

Leo: hey, are you okay?

I nodded and he had his arms wrapped around me in a tight hug then when he let go, I looked right into his face and he apologized for the hug and opened the door to his car.

Leo was sweet and charming and stuff but I didn't want to give him the idea that him and I could freely embrace in a tight hug. Despite everything, I still loved Melvin and he promised to be a better man and I wanted to give him a chance to prove that. With Magdalene dead, Lorna back home and Jade in prison, no one was going to stand in the way of our relationship.

I got in the car and Leo got in too then he helped me put on my seat belt.

Me: you should have just told me to do it.

Leo: it's not a big deal.

He started the car and we drove off from the police station.

Leo: how was it back there?

Me: it was okay, I just told them what they wanted to hear.

Leo: what exactly did you tell them?

Me: that I was not at Magdalene when the killing happened. Melvin already told them that we were on a vacation. I told them Jade had a reason to want to get rid of me by sending me to jail because we are Co wives.

Leo: I see, so you can actually lie..

I looked at him and he looked away. That question made me feel so guilty.

Me: yes, if it means protecting my son and my life as well.

Leo: what about Melvin's?

I didn't respond to that.

Leo: so what's the plan. Are you guys getting back together?

Me: yes. He is my husband Leo.

The silence after that made me realize that's not what he wanted to hear.

Me: when I said my wedding vows, it was in sickness and in health, for richer for poorer, for better and for worse till death do us part...

He still didn't say a word then right ahead, we saw a car speeding coming right at us flashing the lights and I panicked so I held on to the seat tightly as leio drove to the pavement to give that car space and while at it Leo loss control of the car and we drove right into a ditch after Leo missed another car that was in front of us. The car fell on my side and I remembered covering my head with both hands so that the glass from the window wouldn't cut my head but it sure cut my arm and I saw Leo kick the door to his car open and just as he was thinking of getting out, he heard gun shots and people screaming and I looked at him in fear when it occured to me that this was not an accident. This was someone after us.

Leo opened the glove compartment and pulled out a gun but he didn't manage to shoot anyone because whoever was out there shooting people sprayed bullets in our car and Leo had to pounce on me and keep me covered.

The good thing is Leo's windows were closed all the way up and they were tainted too so the guy didn't really bother to check if we were dead or alive.

After the guy drove off, people gathered around the car and someone pulled the door open.

Leo: are you hurt?

I shook my head holding on to him tightly in fear.

Leo: it's okay... They are gone.

The guys who were there helped Leo out of the car then they helped me too and I ended up in Leo's arms again this time while in tears and he was there embracing me in a hug as he rubbed my back and told me it was okay, we were safe...

The car was damaged and people were there taking video. He called someone to come pick us up as we found our way to the nearest pharmacy to have my arm checked.

Me: who was that?

Leo: I don't know Benta. Could be one of your enemies.

Me: one of my enemies could be Magdalene who is dead, then Jade is in jail for now, and you mother is gone...

Leo: but my brother is still very much around.

Me: what, you think Melvin would send people to attack us?

Leo: where is your head at Benta? You left Melvin the one thing he wanted, Ethan. Let me remind you that Melvin is very influencial and getting Jade out of jail can't be an issue for him. Melvin knows I like you alot but he wouldn't care if we both end up dead. If you are really smart you will figure out why..

He got into the pharmacy and I was left standing out there thinking of what Leo had said, what if all that was true, what if Melvin just managed to get me out of the house so that he would get time to run with my son?.

I didn't get into the pharmacy but started running, my head was not functioning as I could not think straight. Could Melvin be that twisted in the head, I mean he was the only possible option of the people that would want to get rid of me. Leo was right because when the police were taking me in for questioning, he didn't seem bothered, yes he talked to the police but that was pretty much it. While still trying to figure out what way to go, a black car drove right past me, the door opened and someone grabbed me, pulled me to the car then drove off and by time Leo realized what was going on, the car had left....

While in the car, I tried to scream but I was knocked out and I couldn't tell who my kidnappers were or what happened to me. I didn't hear the car stop and I didn't know how I got to some dark room where I woke up in. Totally dark that I couldn't see anything..

Me: anyone here?

I asked trying to get up but I stood abruptly because I couldn't see anything at all. Where was I? I had no idea..

I couldn't trace my way back to the seat where I was sitting and I had to spread my hands to feel the space around me lest I bumped into something. I was worried about me and I was worried about my son.

When still trying to find my way in the dark, I heard the door hinges move and shortly after the door opened and in walked a masculine man who hurriedly walked in towards me and grabbed me then pushed me towards the door and left me standing a few centimeters away. I saw a woman walk in and I closed my eyes then opened it to see clearly, it was Lorna.. she greeted me with a hard slap a across my face then grabbed my neck and pushed me down then she switched on the lights and stood there staring at me.....
