Chapter 5

1108 Words
Thane's POV. I could feel her presence in the forest, it was so strong that I could not deny it. I was totally drawn to her, so much so that I was unable to resist the connection that we shared. When I found out that she was my mate, I could no longer wait. I came in search of her in the Silverfang Pack. It was then I realized that she was mated to Rowan, as he was the alpha of the Silverfang Pack. I watched her from afar, seeing how Rowan had ignored her. It broke my heart that I wished I could take her away from the pain she was going through. When she seemed to have perceived my scent, I stepped out of my hideout, staring directly at her, as though she was a magnet pulling me closer. "Freya," I called her name slowly, whispering it with affection. I moved closer to her, "I am Thane. Thane Rahl, your mate." Her brows furrowed, a sign of confusion and surprise filled her face. "Rahl... That name. Are you—" "Yes, I am Rowan's brother." I replied, sensing the question she wanted to ask. Her eyes widened in shock, "and you're my mate? How is that even possible that I am mated to two brothers?" I took a step forward, "I know you can feel the connection between us; the invisible magnet pulling us closer. I could not resist your earthly scent, that's why I'm here for you to accept me as your mate." Literally, I could feel her heartbeat. It was as though it was beating in sync with mine. "I can feel the strong pull, but then... How can I accept to be your mate when I'm already bound to Rowan?" She uttered, a sense of confusion and deep thoughts edged on her face. I sighed, knowing how conflicted she might be. "I understand, Freya. I've watched you for a while, and I can tell that Rowan does not deserve you. I've seen the way he treats you, and it hurts me to know I cannot protect you." She clutched her dress, "I know he doesn't, but I still share a bond with Rowan. And even though I hate him for what he has done, I’m not ready to let go.” She admitted, looking down. I let out a sigh, "I will never hurt you, Freya. I promise to protect you." "I trust you, Thane. I believe your words, and I can't deny the strong bond I feel with you, but I can't accept to be your mate now... especially not now that I still share a bond with Rowan." I looked at her, "if it means that I will wait, then I will definitely wait for you until you are ready," I whispered to her. She stared back at me, "thank you, Thane." Just as those words left her lips, I could feel a familiar scent; one I haven't felt before in many years since we separated. Rowan. Freya,” he said, his voice almost pleading. “I… I know I ignored you, but it was not intentional. I’ve come back for you. For us.” She froze, “I don’t know if I can do this, Rowan,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. “You left me. When I needed you the most, you turned your back on me. Now, fate has bound me to two brothers.” “I know,” he said, his voice breaking. “I was a fool. I didn’t see… I didn’t understand what you needed. But I’ll change, Freya. I swear, I’ll make it right.” I watched as he acted all pitiful, and it angered me to remember how he treated her. I wanted to intervene and protect Freya, but I knew best to allow her to decide. Rowan turned his gaze to me then. There was no brotherly affection, only cold disdain. “And you,” he said, his voice laced with bitterness. “What are you doing here?” “I’m here because Freya deserves better than what you’ve given her,” I replied, my voice firm. “And I’ll be here as long as she needs me, whether you like it or not. She is my mate, and I'm here to claim her.” Rowan’s expression hardened, and he took a step closer. “She is mine, Thane. She has been my mate since the day we were born. Whatever bond you think you have, it’s nothing compared to what we share.” "Rowan, give it up. What I share with Freya is stronger than a magnetic pull. We are drawn to each other, and since you were incapable of taking care of her, fate decided to gift her a second mate who could take care of her." Rowan shook his head, "stop dreaming and return to wherever you came from. This is my pack and you do not belong here anymore." Before I could respond, there was an unfamiliar scent that caused the atmosphere in the forest to change. I could not tell who or what it was, but I was sure it was dark magic. The trees began to dance fiercely as though it was welcoming her presence. I turned to look at Freya, who seemed frightened by the sudden occurrence. “Freya,” I murmured, reaching out to her, wanting to offer any comfort I could. “You don’t have to do this alone. Whatever you decide...I’ll always be here for you.” Rowan stepped closer as well, his gaze softening as he looked at her. “I am, too, Freya. I will be, for as long as you’ll let me.” "Who do you choose, Freya? Make your decision. Think about who has been with you for the longest time. I know I messed up, but then..." Rowan added. Tears shone in her eyes as she looked between us, her face a mask of confusion. And in that moment, I knew that no matter her choice, my feelings wouldn’t change. My bond with her was stronger than anything. I would never force her or compel her to choose. All I could do was be there, no matter the cost. The dark magic tightened around us, and Freya’s eyes widened, a surge of anger burning within her, and she looked at us both, her voice trembling. “I… I choose…” she began, but her voice broke, her heart torn by the confusion and dilemma. She took in a deep breath and looked at us. "I choose... Whoever the moon goddess decides he's best for me."
