Chapter 4

Freya's POV. The pack house was filled with celebration. Laughter and cheers echoed through the halls, filling every corner with an energy that would have once made my heart flutter. Tables were piled with food and drink to welcome their warriors back from the battlefield. But tonight, I felt none of the joy I once used to feel. I felt...blank, as though none of this made sense at all. I stood at the other end, watching everyone smiling and celebrating their alpha. This used to be one of my favorite days, but tonight, my heart was a mix of anger and bitterness. This was the day my people had waited for—the triumphant return of Rowan, Alpha of the Silverfang Pack, my mate. The man who had once held my heart, the one I had trusted above all others. The man who had ignored my pleas, and let me die in my past life. The memories of my death were vivid and haunting, my last moments filled with desperation, betrayal, and heartbreak. I was back again, alive and strong, but the old Freya had died. The noise became more resounding, which meant that he had arrived. As he walked forward, beaming with pride and smile, I was certain he had no idea that the woman he remembered was no longer the same. My heart felt heavy, memories flooding back—the look of irritation on Rowan’s face when I had called to him through the mind link, the cold expression as he had concluded my plea for help as nothing more than a need for attention. And then, the rogue’s grin as Amara’s dark magic had stolen the life of my unborn child. I closed my eyes, struggling to steady my breathing. “I can’t do this,” I murmured, her voice a whisper that only I could hear. I knew I was expected to stand by Rowan’s side tonight, to welcome him as his mate. But every part of me despised him. I was not sure if I could even stand him for a second. “Freya,” a soft voice said beside me, and I turned to see Mara, one of the older pack members, looking at me with a warm smile. “He’s looking for you, dear. Go to him.” I managed to smile, nodding slightly. “Of course,” I replied, my voice barely audible. But instead of stepping forward, I remained in my position, my gaze locked onto Rowan as he greeted his packmates. As he greeted his pack members, I could feel his gaze shift towards me, and for a minute, I wish he would not come close to me. For a brief moment, his face was filled with surprise, as though he had not expected to see me. My heartbeat quickened as a swamp of emotions surged within me—memories of love, betrayal, and heartbreak colliding in her mind. “Freya,” he murmured as he reached me, "you've finally come home." "Is that what you can say to someone who went missing for days, Rowan?" He looked a bit taken aback by my response. "What is wrong with you?" I scoffed, "what is wrong with me? You disgust me, Rowan. How could you betray me when I needed you the most? I went missing for days. Did you care to look for me? I lost my baby because of you!" "What are you saying, Freya? Stop your mind games, you just wanted my attention, and—" he paused, "wait! Our baby...what ha— Were you really being serious? What happened to our child?" "Do not pretend like you care, now, Rowan. I called you several times, and I even lost count of it, but you ignored me. I hate you, Rowan!" Before he could respond, I turned away and left the house. I knew his gaze were still on me, but I didn't dare to look back. I had died once because of him, lost my child because of his nonchalance. And now, here I was, bound to the same fate—bound to the same man who had once let me down so without a second thought. I let out a sigh, enjoying the cool breeze. Then, a sudden rustle from the trees broke the silence, and I turned around, my senses quickening as I became conscious of where I was. “Who’s there?” I called, looking around. A figure stepped forward, emerging from the shadows. He was tall and had broad shoulders. My heart skipped a beat as I took in the stranger's beauty before her, his presence was unlike any I had felt before. I felt an unexplainable pull toward him, something powerful and ancient, as though our souls had known each other long before this moment. “Freya,” he murmured, his voice deep, as though he had been waiting for me all along. The sound of my name on his lips sent a shiver down my spine, a feeling I couldn’t explain. “Who… who are you?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper as I took a hesitant step forward. The man smiled, one that sent a surge of warmth through my chest. “I am Thane,” he replied, his gaze never leaving mine. “And I believe you and I… have much to discuss.” His last words charged me with an energy that left me breathless. I didn’t know who this man was or what he wanted, but I could feel a certain way towards him. There was just something about this man in front of me. It was like we shared an unknown bond. As the night grew darker around us, we just stood there, staring at each other. I found myself drawn to him. Ever since my rebirth, the only emotions I could feel were bitterness, anger, pain, and regret. Tonight, I felt something different about the man in front of me. I could feel another thing, other than the negative emotions that swelled my heart. Was this a sign? Was I bound to another person?
