“He is absolutely adorable, Brother,” Victoria says to me, as she holds one of my sons.
One of my sons.
I still can’t believe I am a father. Every day, I still think about that time a few months ago when I suddenly became a father.
That day started like any other day.
"Today has been a beautiful, wonderful day, my love" my lovely mate, Madelyn, said to me, through our mindlink.
I puffed and growled my approval. Blue smoke rose from my puff of agreement.
Madelyn was riding us as we flew through the night sky, filled with stars.
"I must say my favorite part was our little waterfall rendezvous," I mindlink her back.
"Anything to do with s*x will always be your favorite part," Madelyn said, laughing at us.
"I love the laugh of our mate," Vishous mindlinked me.
I nodded in agreement. It's the most wonderful sound in the world.
"Did you hear that?" Madelyn asked, stopping mid-laugh and c*****g her head.
"Hear what?" We asked, not having heard anything. We were too distracted by the beauty of our mate.
"Go lower," she ordered us.
We dove and flew lower to the ground.
Then we heard it, too.
Someone or something was crying.
Madelyn spread her wings and jumped off our backs to fly on her own.
We followed her as she flew faster in between the trees. Since we were too big, we flew over the trees.
We didn’t like that Madelyn was flying down there without us.
"Mate in danger" Vishous linked me.
"Madelyn? Stop. We smell blood." I mindlinked her.
"I know, me too," she linked back.
"Stop. Let me land and we can go in together," I linked her.
"Ugh. Hurry up," she said back through the link, not too happy to have to wait for me, always the impatient and independent one, our fairy mate.
Vishous landed us in one of the trees and we phased back to me. I quickly put some jeans on and climbed down the tree to Madelyn, who was impatiently waiting.
"Took you long enough," she growled, and then planted a kiss on my cheek.
"You are an exasperating female," I said to her.
We made our way to where the smell of blood was strong.
When we reached the source of the smell, I pushed Madelyn behind me as we took in the bloody scene in front of us.
This looked like a rogue attack on many dragon families.
I went over to the closest male, who was in his dragon form, lying dead on the ground. His mate was in her human form holding a bloody basket a few hundred feet away.
Madelyn and I ran to her.
She was crying and barely alive.
"What happened here?" Madelyn asked her.
"Rogues came. Attack us." She said as blood spilled from her mouth.
"My babies. Help my babies," she said.
We looked under the bloody blanket that was covering the basket she was holding.
There were three infants, triplets.
One was already dead and lifeless, lying next to its siblings. Two were crying but seemed unharmed.
Madelyn took the basket from the woman, so she didn’t see her dead child.
I looked over the female and knew that her injuries were severe. She wasn't going to make it.
"Keep my babies, please" she begged me.
I looked at Madelyn, who had tears in her eyes.
"We will find a home for your babies," I said to the woman.
"No. You keep them." The woman whispered.
I opened my mouth and closed it, not knowing what to answer.
"You are our prince. Please keep them safe." She said to me.
I looked at Madelyn coming over with two babies in her arms. She placed them next to their dying mother.
The crying female kissed them.
I looked at Madelyn. "What do we do?" I linked her.
"We don't have a choice," she said back to me.
I looked at the dying mother, "On my honor. We will raise your babies as our own," I vowed to her.
The mother smiled and then closed her eyes, going on to the Fade.
Madelyn handed one of the babies to me.
It was a boy, from the looks of it. The baby cried and I took his little hand into mine. He stopped crying and looked up at me. His eyes were clear blue.
"I can't believe I have a son," I said to Madelyn in awe.
"You have two sons, my love," she said, carrying the other baby to me.
I looked at the baby boy she was holding. He was not crying anymore and was looking straight at me. Another pair of identical clear blue eyes.
We gave them the names of Noah and Neel.
Victoria was holding Noah and I was changing Neel’s diaper.
“I know. I never thought that I would want to be a father. I mean, before Madelyn, I never even wanted to be a husband. That fear of having responsibilities and liabilities is something that I am still dealing with to this day,” I say to my twin.
“Do you think many fathers have that same fear?” she asks me in a sad voice, her eyes starting to water.
Ever since we got back home after the witch’s Fade ceremony, all those months ago, Victoria has been different.
I know it has to do with that fool, Patrick. That dumb-ass gamma wolf, who chose said-witch over my sister. My sister, who is his true f*****g-mate.
Unfortunately, my sister does not have the luxury that those wolves have to be able to reject their mates. As dragons, we are unable to reject our mates. If our mates reject us, we are made to live the rest of our lives alone.
“I would assume so. But, once we hold our son in our arms, the fear disappears for a while,” I answered her.
Vikki gave Noah a kiss on the cheek and sat him on the floor with his toys.
“Viktor, there is something I need to tell you,” she said to me, without looking me in the eyes.
“I know something has been weighing heavily on your mind, Sis. What's up?” I ask her, sitting Neel next to his brother.
“First I want to thank you for giving me space these past few months. Thank you for not pushing the subject of him.” Victoria says to me.
“I figured, when you were ready to talk about him to me, you would,” I answered, sitting on the floor next to the boys.
“Thank you for that. I have tried my best not to think about him. To try to be my old self and do things as normal as possible. But, I can’t, Viktor. Patrick is always on my mind and after what I realized, I don’t think I will ever get rid of him.” she says to me.
“Realized?” I asked her.
Victoria sits next to Neel. She caresses his head, “I am pregnant, Brother. I am going to have a baby.”
Well...shit!!!
I open my mouth to respond and then shut it again because I really have no idea what to respond.
Victoria looks up at me with tears rolling down her cheeks.
I wipe one away with my thumb.
My poor sister.
“So you two…” I say, and let my sentence trail off.
She nods her head.
“Does he know?” I ask her.
Victoria wipes her cheeks and shakes her head.
“Are you going to tell him?” I ask her.
“No. I don’t know. Not now,” she responds.
“Okay. When are you planning to tell Father?” I ask her.
“I already have,” she says.
This news does surprise me.
“Weird. He hasn’t said anything to me,” I say, confused.
“I asked him to let me be the one to tell you.” Victoria says.
I look at her and know there is more she needs to tell me.
“Go on,” I say.
Victoria smiles sadly, “You always did know me better than anybody else. I also have come to a decision and Father has agreed.”
“I feel like this is the part I am not going to like,” I say to her. Preparing myself for the rest of her news.
“I am leaving, Viktor,” she says to me.
“Leaving? Where?” I ask her.
“I can’t tell you,” Victoria responds.
“What do you mean you can’t tell me?” I ask.
“Father knows and has sworn not to tell anyone. I don’t want anyone to know where I am going. Especially Patrick. If I tell you, I know it might slip and you will tell him. It’s better if we do it this way,” she says.
“No! You can’t run away because of him! We are your family. We love you and will love your child! You can’t be alone! Not at a time like this!” I exclaimed.
My scream brought Madelyn running into the nursery and the boys whimpering.
“What’s wrong?” Madelyn asks.
“Victoria is leaving!” I tell her.
“When will you leave?” I ask Victoria.
“Now. I am leaving the Dragon lands now,” Victoria says to me.
Another normal day that I never thought would end like this.
This can’t be happening. I can’t be losing my twin sister.
Wait till I get my hands on that mutt!
