What exactly is true love?
I wonder about this question quite often.
I guess I have never known what true love is, seeing as how I have never known any male that wasn’t related to me, except by blood.
Being the gods that we are, we have never known what carnal love is. Sibling love, yes. Motherly love, of course. The love I have for each of my beautiful wolf creations is uncontainable. But I see the love that my creations have for their mates. A love so pure that they go to extraordinary measures to protect it. This, I must admit, I covet. I would like to know one day what it feels like to have this carnal love that mates have.
For those of you who do not know, my name is Katya. I am the Moon Goddess. Mother and creator of the wolf species that exists in the magical lands that my parents created. It is a magical land that exists on a separate plane of existence than that of the human realm. I live in the common house of the Gods with my six siblings, each the mother or father of a species that exists along with my wolves.
“Katya.”
I jump at the sound of my name being called from behind me. I am usually so wrapped up in my own thoughts, that I tend to tune out everyone else around me. I guess it's become a habit since solitude is all I had for so many years. It is all each of my siblings had as well, for we have only just begun to speak to each other again, after decades.
“Yes, brother of mine,” I answered my brother Kris, father of the dwarves.
“You are being summoned,” he says in a reserved voice.
“Summoned? By whom, pray tell?” I say to him, hiding the feeling of dread that I felt growing inside.
“Well... everyone,” he said, rubbing his golden curls nervously. “Come. They are all in the Grand Hall.”
The feeling of dread only intensifies as I walk down the hall, closer to the grand hall. I honestly should have expected this. I knew that my sister Melissandra, mother of the witches, would not be able to keep secret what I promised her daughter, Kate. A promise I was going to keep in its entirety, no matter what the outcome of this “trial” I was going to have to face with my siblings.
I considered Kate, a witch by birth, but my adoptive daughter because my wolves took her and her mother in when they were in need. My Patrick and my Damian showed love and compassion to Kate and her mother when Kate’s own species hunted them. Being as I considered her my daughter as well, I accompanied Kate on her walk to the Fade. The Fade is a comparison to the human-Heaven, but so much better. After her sad and untimely death, I made a promise to Kate to send a couple of messages to the loved ones she left behind.
I had already delivered one of the messages, which was how the evil warlock, Ezekiel, was brought to justice. Rightful justice, if you ask me. The other message was yet to be delivered to my Patrick. He needed to know.
He needs to know his mate is in danger, as well as their unborn child.
Patrick, my dear Gamma wolf of the Yellow Moon Clan, has really screwed up things, but honestly, he was put into a very sad predicament. His love for Kate was abundant, but in unforeseen circumstances, my sister and I didn’t really think it out and accidentally set him down the path of finding his mate in the arms of a certain dragon princess. My poor Patrick had an impossible decision to make. He, unfortunately, chose wrong in the beginning and when he felt the mating bond with Victoria, the dragon princess, grow, it was too late. Victoria is heartbroken and Kate is dead.
I feel the desire to help their love triangle have a happy ending. Kate is at peace in the Fade, that I have no doubt. Now, Patrick and Victoria deserve their happy ending as well. I just hope I can get him the message in time.
My brother and I finally reached the front door of the Grand Hall. The door was a large, rustic-style door, surrounded by a cauble-white stone frame. Before pushing the large black handle, I took a deep breath and prepared myself for the worst. I squared my thin shoulders and pushed the handle, then walked in.
The Grand Hall has always been one of my favorite rooms. It was large and exquisite. The architectural design encompassed each of my and my siblings' likings and connection to our species.
The Grand Hall was created by our parents, as a gift to us, their children. Our parents were the first God and Goddess of all time. They created the magical land that our creations inhabit, including this enormous and majestic mansion. Their powers were, in all honesty, their own undoing. I know that secretly, my siblings and I hope that the same does not happen to us. I looked around the Hall at each of my siblings, sitting on their thrones. Kris walked around me and sat on his own stone throne.
I took another deep breath and walked to the center of the room.
“Well, don’t you all look serious, brothers and sisters,” I say to them, noticing how my twin sister, Natya, is chewing on her bottom lip, which she usually does when she is nervous.
“Well, this is a serious matter, we must discuss it, little sister,” Irina, mother of the Fairies, says.
I looked over at her sitting on her white-stone throne. Specks of white gold dust made it glitter under the rays of the sun coming through the tall, arched windows that encircled the perimeter of the hall.
“I can see that, sister. Let us get on with it, then. I am sure we all have many important things to do,” I say to her, as respectfully as I can.
“Yes, you in particular, always seem to have ‘important’ things to do, don’t you, Katya?” Irina says to me.
“Whatever do you mean?” I say, catching the way she exaggerated the word, important.
“Don’t play dumb, Katya. You know what you did?” Irina says to me.
“I assure you, I am in no mood to play games, Irina. Now, tell me, what do you think I did wrong?” I say to her, more forcefully.
“It is not just Irina who thinks what you did is wrong, Katya. We agree with her as well,” Kaleb, the father of the Elves, says to my right.
I turn to look at him but before I can speak, my brother Kayan speaks.
“Speak for yourself, brother. I for one, do not see anything wrong with what Katya has done,” Kayan speaks and then gives me a wink.
“I don’t either,” Natya says softly, from her throne.
“Neither do I,” says Melissandra, whose throne is next to her.
“Whatever everybody’s opinions may be, Katya has done something big that we need to discuss. It is not the first time it has happened either,” Irina says, dismissing my sibling’s support, with a wave of her hand.
“Happened?” I ask for clarification again.
“The way that you like to meddle with the lives of your creations, Katya. You have done it multiple times and it needs to stop.” Kaleb answers me.
“You have repeatedly interacted with your creations and have influenced their destinies,” Irina adds.
“We all have a hand with how our creations' destinies will play out, Irina,” I answer her.
“Katya is right. We place our creations in the paths to find their true mates. We influence how their lives will go,” Kayan says.
“That is not the same, Kayan. Katya doesn’t just create matings, she makes promises to her wolves and others. Appears to them, talks to them during and now even after death!” Irina says, exasperated.
“Irina…” Kayan starts to speak but I raise my hand to stop him. He nods and gives me my time.
“Let me ask you a question, dear sister?” I say to Irina.
She nods at me.
I think of what I am going to ask before I ask it. I know Irina believes she is right, she is not trying to be a total b***h. I have always respected my older siblings and I always will, but on this topic, we need to change and be all on the same page.
“Do you love your creations?” I ask her.
“What kind of question is that? Of course, I love my Fae creations. They are my sons and daughters. What hurts them, hurts me,” she answers.
“I would assume we all feel the same way as Irina, towards our own creations,” I ask my siblings around me.
“Of course,” Kaleb answers.
“Without question,” Kayan answers.
“Yes,” Melissandra answers.
“You know I do, sister,” Natya responds.
I look at Kris, and he responds with a nod.
“Then in the words that Irina used, what hurts them, hurts us. Our creations love us. Most adore and pray to us. Yes, we have granted our species free will, as well they deserve. But, they need to know that we are here, looking out for them. They need to know we love them back. They need to know that we love them unconditionally and that even though we cannot stop every bad thing that happens to them, they need to know that we feel their pain. We need to show them, brothers and sisters. I would not change a thing I did and I encourage you to do the same. Show yourself to your creations more often. Whisper words of encouragement to them. Let them hear your words of love and compassion. We have been away from them so long, that some are forgetting. I think that is what is going on with those members of our species that have gone down dark paths. We have not just been silent amongst ourselves for so long, but we have been silent to our sons and daughters as well.” I say and wait as my siblings think over my words.
“So many of my sons and daughters, especially, have gone towards the darkness,” Melissandra whispers, in thought.
“Do you think it is more than just their free will that is pushing them to do that, Meli?” Kayan asks.
She shrugs, still in thought.
“We know our parents made The Fade and made Inferno, to keep the balance of good and evil. Free will is what gives our creations the right to decide which way they will choose to go. But, maybe there is something else pulling them towards evil...” Irina says, and lets her thoughts trail off.
“I agree with what you say, Irina but I also understand the words of Katya. Maybe many of our creations will choose good over evil if they hear from us more. Or maybe there is something even bigger at work in our magical world,” Kayan says.
I look at my siblings and they are all thinking carefully about what was said. We have never been made aware of another presence bigger than that of us, but other than free will, what else could be leading our creations astray?
After a few minutes of their silent deliberation, Irina stands and walks toward me. She puts her hands on my shoulders, “For being one of the youngest of us all, Katya, you are one of the wisest. Thank you, sister. You have yet again spoken sense to us. We must look into this closer. Not to change the paths of our creations, but to protect their free will if something or someone else is leading them astray and manipulating their sense of moral direction.”
I smile and give her a hug. Thankful that they are seeing what I see.
“Katya,” Kayan calls my name.
I look up at him.
“Tell me, how are we going to help your Patrick and my Victoria,” he says with a smile.
