~ Aylana's POV ~
"You will regret it. You will regret running away from me." I heard Nathan's voice and he was not only angry, he sounded pissed at me. How is this possible? How am I still able to hear him? I had come quite far from the territory of the Wind Winder Pack and had, judging by the thick sheet of snow which was covering the ground, I could tell that we had entered the north. The only thing that's confusing me is why are there no werewolves guarding the borders? I am still not able to hear the voice of Aurora after rejecting that sick-minded person.
My mother was not able to keep up with me and I know that she must be tired because of all the ruin on an empty stomach. I am used to working in the packhouse without eating anything for a whole day, but she is not as I always gave her my share of food, so that at least she won't be hungry.
She is getting older and it's not just her age that's increasing, but with her increasing age, she is getting weaker and weaker.
The dark forest is never-ending and it's been hours that we are walking, but I still can't find a way out of this damn forest. Why the f**k I have such a horrible sense of direction?
We had already finished the snacks that Hayley had kept in the backpack that she had given me. I could not even buy anything here. We don't even have water left in the bottle. Even if there is a lake around this place, then it must surely be frozen in this cold. My mother was rubbing her shoulders to get some warmth, but I could tell that it was not helping her out that much, so I gave her the jacket that I was wearing.
"It's strange." I mumbled to myself when I gazed up at the sky. When I left the territory of the Wind Winder Pack, I saw that there was a full moon in the sky, so why is there no moon here? How could this happen? A moonless sky on the night of a full moon… now that's kind of weird, right?
Suddenly, my mother tightly held me by my shoulder and she was about to fall on the ground, but I immediately held her by her shoulders, so that she wouldn't fall. Her body was shivering and when I touched her forehead, I gasped in shock.
She is burning. Her whole body is burning due to a high fever. She is losing consciousness and she might not be able to stand for too long. She tried to return the jacket to me. Is she still worried about me in this situation?
How could anyone even think about leaving her? I know that she is a mute. I am aware that she doesn't have a wolf or any sort of ability to protect herself, but even after being abandoned, she decided to give birth to me. She didn't throw me away, she didn't give up on me even though everyone else had given up on her at that time.
How could anyone call her weak?
Yeah, she might be weak physically now, but nobody can be brave like her. She had faced everything alone.
I stopped her from giving me the jacket that I had made her wear.
"Do you want me to get angry with you, mom? For once, let me take care of you." I helped her with walking and she just smiled at me.
We walked and walked, but I could tell that she wouldn't be able to continue to walk in her state.
"Just a little longer, mom." I said to her, but before she could reply to me, she fell on the cold ground.
"Mom!" I tried to wake her up, but nothing happened.
I was not even able to carry my mother. How could I be so useless? I looked here and there and my eyes fell on a sled that was lying around and it didn't look like it belonged to anybody.
I pulled the sled and after that, I somehow managed to make her sit on the sled. I don't have a choice here. I will have to pull the sled. I need to first find a place where I could do something to bring down her fever and I also need to find something for her to eat.
I grabbed the rope and I then started to pull it with all the strength that I had left in my body. I closed my eyes and suddenly I had a vision of a small cottage that was somewhere near here.
"What the heck is happening?" I grabbed the ropes tightly. Something is definitely weird about this place. First, I heard Nathan's voice and now I am having visions of a place that I have never seen in my life.
Is this all just in my head or is there certainly a cottage around this place?
Soon, all my questions were answered when I saw the old wooden cottage in front of my eyes. I stopped dragging the sled and when I gazed at my burning hands, they were covered with bruises and marks that I got after pulling the sled.
I won't consider these marks ugly as they are something that I got for the sake of my mother.
I tried to wake her up and she slowly opened her eyes. She was not fully conscious, but she was able to walk with me inside the old wooden cottage. The main door was opened and it was covered with dust and the roof was covered in snow.
We went inside and there was at least a bed. I tried to find the candles as there was no electricity here. It's strange that I could clearly see in the darkness. I searched the drawers and I finally found some candles and also a matchbox. I lit the candles and placed them around my mother's bed.
She held my hand and I hissed in pain, making her aware of the bruises that I had got.
"It's not your fault, so you don't need to blame yourself. I am going to find some food for us, so don't get worried about me."
Mom didn't want me to go out alone, but she was too weak to even fight with me or to even stop me. I don't know who designed this cottage, but there was also a lock in it and I found the key in the drawer when I was searching for the candles. If it had a locking system, then why was the main door open?
After locking the main door, I walked deep inside the forest in the hope of finding something to eat for my mother. I have been walking around, I am not sure for how long, but I could not even find a single thing in this snowy weather.
Suddenly, I heard a loud growl and I could tell that the person was dashing towards me.
Don't tell me that I am going to be surrounded by rogues? I can't be that unlucky, right?
I hid behind the bushes as I could hear that the footsteps were getting closer to me.
"I… I am sorry… I am sorry… I will never say anything against you or your brother… but please let me go." The old man was begging someone, but I was not able to see their faces clearly because of the heavy snowfall.
Should I go out and help him out? Suddenly, I saw the silver, black and gray fur of the werewolves and I then saw their green eyes.
I gulped down hard when I looked into the emerald green, sea-green and forest-green eyes of those werewolves. What's happening to me? Why am I not able to look anywhere else? The werewolves surrounded the old man who was continuously pleading with them and before I could think about something to help him out, I suddenly sneezed and that was enough for me to get their attention.
I walked out in the hope that they wouldn't hurt the man and maybe I could try to change their minds about harming the old man.
The man who had been pleading with the wolves till now, dashed towards me before the werewolves could stop him.
He then placed the silver knife around my throat that he was carrying with him.
"What are you doing? Remove the blade of this knife from my throat." I tried to warn the man, but he simply put some pressure on the blade and my neck got a little wounded. Blood was oozing out and the man was in no mood to let me go.
"Shut up, b***h! If you don't want me to hurt this little girl, then you better not try to pull any sort of trick. Let me go or I will kill her." The old man shouted at the wolves and they all shifted back to their human form, so I immediately shut my eyes tightly. I don't want to see them naked.
"Let's save her, brother. Look, she is even closing her eyes for our sake. Isn't she a cutie?" The guy sounded like he was enjoying my reactions.
"Kill her if you want to. As if I care. Judging by her clothes, I could tell that she is certainly nothing more than trash, so why would I compromise for the sake of saving her useless life, huh?" This time I heard a deep voice, but I could tell that he was just a cold-hearted person.
Who the heck are they? Who gave them the right to decide about my life? I don't care if they are naked or not, but I am not going to leave them for saying such a thing about me.
What he said might be true. Why would they care about a random girl, but why are his words hurting me so much?
When I opened my eyes, I saw something that I didn't expect at all.
Is this happening for real?
