The Old Switcheroo
The Easter vacation was three weeks long. The previous year I’d gone back home and managed to find casual work as a barman at night, and by day stacking shelves in the local supermarket; and neither of them paid very well! I was away from Laura, and I also didn’t get very much sleep from working two jobs!
But this year Laura had found a fantastic opportunity for me. One of the parents at her school managed a medical testing lab near the village, and they needed somebody with basic lab experience to be what they described as a ‘lab technician’. But I knew this was code for ‘poor bastard who has to clean the lab up and make the tea’. But it paid at least twice as much as the normal, menial stuff I did at home.
