Chapter 13
I wake up to my phone ringing, I roll over grabbing my phone to see who it is. Oh no it’s Addie’s school.
“Hello?”
“Miss Michaels, it’s Principle Harris”
“Uhh hi Principle Harris is everything ok?”
“Unfortunately not, there has been an altercation I need you to come down to the school”
“Ok I'll be there as soon as I can Sir” I reply and hang up the phone. I quickly get out of bed and grab some clothes to throw on and my purse and run out to my car. What could have happened? An altercation, like a fight? Addie in a fight that seems crazy she's such a sweet kid and has never had any issue with other kids before. She’s always been well liked, a friend to all. Before I knew it I was pulling into the school parking lot. I head in the big double doors and walk up to the receptionist at the front desk.
“Hello my name is Hayley Michaels, I'm Addison Teller’s mom.” I say
Looking up from her computer she says “Yes Miss Michaels, Principle Harris is expecting you. Please follow me.” She motions for me to come around the desk and I follow her down the hall. At the end of the hall I see the frosted glass door. She knocks and I can’t help but feel like I'm in trouble. My heart is pounding like I'm about to get an oh so familiar lecture from the principle like when I was in high school and Alex and I would get caught smoking weed or skipping class. Or the one time we got caught in the locker room when we should have been in Mrs. Beaslies algebra class. I was just in my bra and skirt and Alex in his boxers when Miss Stigles the gym teacher caught us.
“Miss Michaels” “Miss Michaels the Principle is ready for you”
“Thank you I say nodding to the elderly lady”
“Awe Miss Michaels nice to meet you, I'm Principle Harris”
“Good afternoon sir” I say shaking his hand
“Miss Michaels this is Mr. and Mrs. Greene”
“Hello” I say shaking their hands
“Please sit everyone” We all sit waiting on an explanation as to why we are here.
“Well let's get to the point. Addison and Layne were in some sort of altercation today that ended in a physical fight. The girls would not tell the staff what started this altercation but the girls are not allowed to return to school for the rest of the week. We have very strict policies here and if the girls get more then 3 strikes, they will be expelled.”
After listening to his speach I didn’t have anything to say. I just wanted to see Addie and figure out what happened. I tune out the things the Greenes and Mr. Harris are talking about only thinking of Addie. What if she’s hurt, she might need me and I'm stuck here listening to them yamer on.
“Miss Michaels, hello did you have anything to add?”
“Oh, sorry Sir, no I don’t have anything to say I just want to see my daughter” I say getting up from the chair and leaving the room.
“Excuse me mam where can I find Addie?” I say to the receptionist
“Yes Miss, she is over here in the conference room with the other girl and Mr. Davis.” She leads me to the conference room around the corner.
“She’s right in this room Miss”
“Thank you” I say smiling. I open the door and there is my girl a quick look and she looks ok. No bleeding no bruising.
“Mom” Addie says running and giving me a hug.
“Come on Addie let's get outta here and you can tell mom all about what happened” I say looking at her worried expression. I lead her out of the school and to my car opening the back door for her.
“Addie...what happened?” She just looks out the window with a sad expression on her face.
“Addie you have to tell me what happened”
“She was picking on me”
“who? That girl in the room with you?”
“Yea, Layne Greene”
“Picking on you about what?” I ask but get no response.
“Addison” I say sternly
“She said I was a bastard child, because I don’t have a father” She says to me, subtle tears stream down her face.
“Addison you have a father”
“Yea but I don’t know him, I don’t even know anything about him”
“Addie I’m sorry, someday maybe you can meet your father but I need you to know that he and I both love you very much. Mr. Harris said this little fight turned physical? Did she hit you?” I ask concerned.
Again she doesn’t answer.
“Addison I asked you a question”
“No” she says very quietly
“What?” I ask as I could harldy hear her.
“NO SHE DIDN’T HIT ME! OK?!”
“Addison Grace! You will not speak to me in that tone!” I say sternly
“Sorry” she muttered
“I’m still waiting on the rest of the story Addie”
“I punched her in the face” she said, and I was so dumbfounded I didn’t know what to say. Just as I was going to respond to her my phone rings. I pick it up not recognizing the number.
“Hello?”
“Hayley it’s Greg”
“Is everything ok?” I ask nervously
“Alex is bleeding again can you come over now?”
“Uhhh I have Addie with me right now...I’ll try getting ahold of her sitter.”
“Great thanks Hayley.” He says disconnecting the call. I quickly dial Mandys number hoping she will answer. It rings and rings until her voicemail picks up “Hey you’ve reached Mandy leave a message”
“Mandy I need you to call me back ASAP it’s important.” I hang up headed in the direction of the clubhouse, hoping Mandy will call me back before I get there and meet me in town to take Addie. The clubhouse was a 20 minute drive from the school and Mandy never called back and I tried calling 3 more times with no luck. I arrived to the clubhouse gates and see Ray on guard. He quickly opens the gate for me and I pull up and park.
“Addie, we need to talk” I say looking at her with a serious expression on my face.
