Chapter 6
I sit there shocked at what Miranda has said. I didn’t know what to think, what to say. Was it all an act in front of Miranda? Was he just trying to play it off like I never told him about our daughter so he wouldn’t look like a horrible person for being absent the last 9 years? So many things are running through my mind.
“Hayley I’m so sorry please don’t be mad at me” Miranda says bringing me out of my thoughts.
“Miranda I’m not mad at you. I’m a bit confused, was he trying to play it off in front of the other’s like he had no idea?”
“ I don’t think so, nobody else was around it was just him and I and he look genuinely confused.” Miranda says
“I just don’t understand how he wouldn’t know. I mean its not like the post office could have lost every letter I sent to him. He had to have gotten them. Maybe he just didn’t open them.”
“Maybe” Miranda agrees
“I don’t think he would just not open them, at least not any of them. You sent so many, and..” Miranda says trailing off
“And what?” I ask
“I saw him a couple times after you left. The first time he was walking late at night so I pulled over to see if he was ok. He was drunk and I gave him a ride home….he cried to me how much he missed you. That was before you found out you were pregnant. The second time was a couple months into the pregnancy I saw him at the fair with some of the guys and the club skanks. He looked happy which pissed me off cuz you had sent him the letters and hadn’t heard from him. So after that I just steered clear of him. I’d see him here and there around town occasionally, but we never talked again after that night I picked him up. Not until last night.”
“I should talk to him” I say Miranda just looks at me with a concerned face.
“I don’t know where to find him other than the clubhouse, and I surely don’t wanna go there” I say
“I could ask Tyler if he knows where his house it” Miranda says
“I would appreciate that, thanks.”
“Of course let me call him real quick”
“Thanks I’m gonna make some coffee while you call him. I think this morning needs a lot of coffee.”
Miranda meekly chuckles as I leave the room. I head into the kitchen turning on the coffee pot. Better make a full pot I tell myself. I pop my head in and check on Addie while I wait on my coffee.
“You need anything Addie?”
“No thanks mommy I’m good” she says smiling at me
Walking back into the kitchen the comforting aroma of coffee fills my nose, relaxing me. I pour a cup for myself and one for Miranda. I walk into the living room just as she is ending the call with Tyler. Miranda looks up at me as I walk in.
“Tyler says he has a house on Kingswood, not sure exactly which one but it’s a small street only like 5 houses, just look for a house with a bike in the driveway.”
“I’ll do that” I say chuckling a little
“Do you have a plan?” Miranda asks
“Not really, just gonna talk to him. Get a feel for what he knows I guess.”
“I’ll stay with Addie while you go.” Miranda says
“You think I should go now?” I say surprised
“Well yea, you don’t want him just stopping by here looking for answers do you?”
Thinking it over she has a good point I should get it over with. I don’t want him just showing up at the house. Especially with Addie here, I don’t want the first time she meets her father to be something forced.
“Ok, guess ill put some shoes on.”
After telling Addie I had to run out for an errand and that Aunt Mandy would be there with her I hopped in my car and headed over to Kingswood Dr. The whole drive which was only 15 minutes but felt like forever, my heart was pounding, my mind racing. I finally pull onto his street and look around at the houses, seeing a nice little house at the end with a bike in the driveway. As I get closer, I can make out the black jack playing card painted on the side of the gas tank, the Blackjack MC signature. I pull up on the side of the street working up the courage to get out of the car before I know it I find myself knocking on his door.
“HI, Alex”
