I tossed and turned all night long. I couldn’t sleep between Zoe’s antsiness and my nervousness about today’s trip. I turned and grabbed my cellphone, seeing that it was only six am. I decided that since was I was not able to sleep that I was going to stand up from the bed and do something useful.
I walked toward the ensuite bathroom and switched on the light, quickly closing my eyes at the brightness and then blinking rapidly so they could adjust to the light. After doing my business on the toilet, I stood back up and walked toward the sink, grabbing a hair tie and putting my long black hair into a bun right on top of my head. I washed my hands, then grabbed my toothbrush to begin my ritual.
Once out of the bathroom, I walked toward the dresser, grabbing a sports bra and some shorts. I put on my running shoes and then looked at myself in the mirror. You can see the bit of the tattoo I have on my ribs as soon as I turned eighteen, against my parents' wishes, of course.
“That is my favorite one of all.” Zoe chimed in.
“Well, hello there, drama queen. You going to tell me what last night was about?” I asked her, rolling my eyes.
“You will soon find out.” She replied.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah.” I answered as I turned around, grabbed my phone from the bed, and walked out of the room. I was going to check up on the warriors and congratulate them on how well they were doing while sparring.
I walked down the steps to the first floor and watched the omegas as they set up the dining room buffet style.
“Good morning, Alpha.” Yesenia, my head omega, said, bearing her neck.
“Good morning, Yesenia. How are you this morning?” I asked her, placing my cell phone in the side pocket of my shorts.
“I am feeling well. This morning, I had zero morning sickness, which is good.” She replied, smiling and rubbing her tiny bump.
“Well, that’s good. I will see you later, okay?” I told her as I walked past her and toward the training grounds.
I was raised to treat all of our pack member with respect and dignity, so having a normal conversation and knowing all of our pack members' name was detrimental to us.
The training grounds were located in the rear of the main pack house. There were about four thousand square feet of indoor gym equipment. It ranged from ellipticals to treadmills to punching bags. You name it. We had it. Behind the indoor gym followed the outside portion of the training grounds, where they would spar— sometimes in human form and other times in wolf form.
Seeing that the indoor gym was empty, I walked out to the back, checking on them as they did their thing. Right now, they are paired in two's. I tend not to shift unless highly necessary and only sparred with my father.
My mind wandered to the night of my first shift.
~Flashback~
“Daddy, why is it just the three of us out here tonight and not the whole pack?” I asked my father, remembering feeling left out. When a wolf shifts for the first time, the whole pack house gathers, and we have a celebration, but with me, the Alpha’s daughter, it was not the case.
“Honey, you are an alpha, and we want to make sure everything goes smoothly.” He told me as he cupped my cheek. “Now, how about we sit on the ground until the urge comes through?” My father asked me as he sat in front of me, my mother sitting next to him.
I nodded, sitting right in front of them, criss-cross-legged. We sat there for what felt like an eternity until I felt the tingly sensation running down all of my body.
“I think it’s happening.” I told my parents with wide eyes.
“Hello there, gorgeous. My name is Zoe, and I am your wolf. Please don’t freak out, but our first shift won’t hurt as much as they think. We are special.” Zoe said right before I saw the white hair protruding from my pores.
I looked at my arms and then at my parents, whose eyes were wide in shock. Then I looked down at my feet, now paws, I felt an urge to bend forward, and as I did, I could feel my spine rearrange itself, and my hands become two more paws. I have seen many shifts before, but seeing how mine was different was bizarre. I looked at my parents, with tears streaming down their faces and hugging each other.
“You are beautiful.” My father mind linked me, making me lie down so they could pet me.
I could see my paws and how they looked like they were dipped in tiffany blue paint.
“Go on for a run, but don’t go too far.” My father mind linked me.
I stood on all fours and then headed toward the lagoon. Running at full speed, hearing the twigs breaking from my running, my fur feeling the wind. It was fantastic.
I got closer to the lagoon and took my tongue out to drink some water, noticing the very noticeable dot on my forehead. Tiffany blue, of course. I ran back toward my parents with a thousand questions running through my mind.
“Just think of your human form.” My mother's mind linked to me, and just like that, I was thinking of my two long legs and my long black hair, and when I opened my eyes, I was standing naked right in front of my parents. My mother quickly gave me a sundress she brought, and I grabbed it, sliding it on instantly.
I looked at them with brows furrowed. “I know you have questions.” My father said, making me scoff.
“We can’t answer them right now, but I promise that we will once we get the okay.” He replied, making me furrow my brows even more.
“Why can’t you tell me? The okay from who?” I asked them, and they shook their heads in response.
“Not now, Honey.” My mother said.
~End of flashback~
“Alpha?” Richard called, bringing me back to the present. I shook my head to forget that day and the conversation we still hadn’t had.
“Sorry, I was thinking.” I replied, smiling at him.
“Clearly.” He shook his head, smiling.
“Why are you up so early?” He asked as he took a wide stance, folding his arms across his chest and legs wide.
Richard is nothing but scary. He is about six feet six inches, two hundred and fifty pounds, and has a scar above his right eyebrow. To add to his menacing stance, he has a full sleeve of tattoos on his right arm and right leg—let’s not even talk about his wolf.
“I couldn’t sleep.” I told him, shrugging my shoulders.
“I suggest you take a nap because we all know how you act when you are tired, and we have to be locked up with you in a car for six hours.” He mentioned as he turned around and left me there. I can’t sleep. Not now. I said to myself.
I made my way into the gym, got on a treadmill, and ran. I ran until my lungs were burning for air.
“I came to cuddle, and guess who is not here cuddling with me?” Kaelie mind linked me, making me shake my head and turn off the treadmill.
“Get off my bed!” I yelled back at her from my mind-link.
“Then come and cuddle with me.” She replied, making me roll my eyes at her.
“I can’t wait for you to meet your mate.” I told her as I got off the treadmill and walked toward the bench with towels. I grabbed one and dried my face, then grabbed a water bottle, twisted the lid off, and drank all its contents in a matter of seconds. I threw the bottle in the trash can and pulled the door open. I made my way back into the pack house.
I ran up the stairs two at a time until I reached the top and opened my bedroom door, finding Kaelie slightly snoring on my bed. This bītch, I swear.
I walked into the bathroom, ignoring her completely, and went straight to the shower. Once thoroughly showered and relaxed, I became sleepy, so I slid on some pj’s and got under the covers, pushing her to the other side of the bed. I set the alarm to wake me in one hour and a half, and I closed my eyes, letting my dreams consume me.
I usually dreamed of myself in wolf form, chasing a pup that looked like me around a field of wildflowers, but now my dreams were of myself in human form, rubbing a very massive black wolf with black eyes. I jumped up before my alarm even beeped.
“Zoe, what the fūck was that?” I asked her if she had a bit of insight. I gasped for air while holding my heaving chest.
“We will soon find out.” She replied.
“Can you stop being so fūcking cryptic?” I asked her as I rolled my eyes and stood up from the bed.
“Sorry, I can’t. The Moon Goddess rules.” She replied, making me freeze on my spot.
“Wait, what? You spoke to her?” I asked her, holding my chest, my heart beating so fast.
“Duh, all the time!” She said as I imagined her lying on her tummy, head on her two front paws. “Don’t even think about it. I can’t tell you more than that.” She replied before I even asked her anything else.
I huffed at her response and turned around. Kaelie sprawled across my bed, drooling on my pillow. Ew gross!
"Get up! Your drooling on my pillow! Plus, we are late!." I yelled at her as I pulled her legs. Once she was on the floor, I walked into the closet to look for what I was going to wear.
"With the way you act, you will never find your mate! You are so mean!" Kaelie said as she rubbed her asš.
"Lucky for me, I don't want a mate." I told her, throwing her a wink.
Little did I know that my life would take a turn in just a couple of hours.
