“She taught me the same,” Annie said. She slipped her pendulum into her front pocket, then knelt again, trailing her fingers in the water circling through Marlene’s Eddy. “It’s not going to work for us here.” Deb tried closing her eyes and focusing on keeping her hand still while the pendulum moved, but a wave of nausea crashed through her, all the way from her gut up to her jaw. She blinked her eyes open and shook her head, putting the tiny acorn and leaf into her own pocket. “I’d swear I have a bad sinus infection, or maybe an ear infection. No wonder the dogs are getting so upset. What do you think caused...” Deb trailed off at Annie’s gasp, and she followed Annie’s wide-eyed gaze. All the crystals Annie had so carefully balanced on the sycamore tree’s root no longer faced the same
