The drive down to the trail and most of the hike out toward Marlene’s Eddy passed in a sort of horrified haze for Deb. She wasn’t sure whether Annie’s tale of Estonoa getting attacked by earworms or sinner moths was worse, or whether she wanted to hear any more stories of the town’s history. She’d never imagined reality actually surpassing the crazy tales she, Terri, and Jeff scared each other with on so many long-past summer nights. She also had her first real misgivings about settling down here, but they didn’t last long. After all, strange and freaky and just plain weird as Atlanta could be, Deb wasn’t likely to find anything nearly as interesting as she’d already discovered in her newly adopted Appalachian hometown.
