Chapter 4

Leah Knight When we arrived at the hospital, Ares had already booked an appointment with the pediatrician. Or maybe they just squeezed us in because Ares Knight practically ruled the whole state. Ares and I waited in the lobby as we waited patiently for the doctor and the results. Momentarily, Ares handed me a can of coke. I smiled my thanks and leaned back as sat down with his arm outstretched over my shoulder. A little while after, Ares decides to break the comfortable silence. "why does she needs check up? She seems totally fine to me" he asked, ending his words with a chime. I sighed, playing with the can in my hand. "I gave birth to her prematuredly. I fell down the stairs back at the house in South Georgia when I was 7 months pregnant and the doctors had to save her life" I paused and when I realized Ares was attentive to the story, I continued "it was either her life or mine. I was in a very bad condition. I needed someone to hold unto me but Troy was away for business. I was worried about Reina, not even my own life. I gave up easily. But I guess God said it wasn't my time yet" I broke into a short laugh "my queen almost cost my life" I smiled. Ares said nothing afterwards. Just stared at me, his gaze burning my profile. My palms began to sweat and momentarily, the can of coke slipped out of my hand. It made a loud thud on the floor before I could catch it. Suddenly, Ares engulfed me in a warm embrace and I gave in, casually hugging him. The memory was not what I wanted to remember because it reminded of how lonely and unwanted I felt in that emergency room. "I'm sorry" he whispered into my hair, as if angry with himself. I found a voice to speak even if it was a broken murmur. "for what?" "for not k********g you earlier so I could protect you from stupid stairs and see my baby born healthy and hearty" he says, ending with a joking tone. I chuckled against his chest. "it wasn't the stairs genius, it was the heels I wore" I replied. He pulled away to observe my face. "you wore heels when you were seven months pregnant?" he quizzed. "ask me again, chicken" I laughed. "I thought Reina would have a good example when she's a mother" he joked. "so what, I'm a bad mother now?" I narrowed my sunset gaze at him. A handsome smile spread across his face, enhancing his features as he searched my face, tucking away a strand over the side to get a good look. "no, beautiful. You're a fantastic mother. A chic one also, for wearing heels while seven months pregnant" he murmured, still smiling. Heat creep up my neck and I tried to suppress a blush. "thank you" I said, smiling. Just then, the doctor approached us with Reina in his hands. As soon as he reached us, I craddled my baby in my arms. She was peacefully sleeping, seeming totally alright. "I'm very impressed, Mrs Knight. From the previous result you brought with you from South Georgia General Hospital, you took the baby out of the incubator after a week of her birth. She wasn't strong then. But right now, your daughter is healthy and hearty, she's more than alright. But also one thing, if you're in good health also, I suggest you feed her with pure breastmilk to make her stronger. Because right now, baby milk could cause her lack of growth because of its chemicals" the doctor reported, smiling. I smiled brightly at him. "it's okay doctor. I will. Thank you" I replied. ********** Ares decides against business and 30 minutes later, he puts in a code on the pad imprinted on the wall and the black metallic gate opened. "I don't get why you won't hire a gateman, Ares" I complained as we drove into the large plot of lawn. "not all people are to trusted, Leah" he replied. "it's frustrating" I glared. "and I'm not complaining" he rolled his eyes. The mansion from this view was like a white pigeon. Ares parked the car in the open garage and the three of us got out. Like a real family. Ares unlocked the double doors and we entered the house. After Ares helped me hang my coat, I ran down the corridors and turned into the living room before walking up the flight of stairs. I unlocked the door to our room and quietly slipped in. I walked over to Reina's crib and laid her down slowly. After tucking her in, I left the room and went back downstairs. Ares was in the kitchen when I went back. I walked across the living room, glancing at the clock and realizing it was 8:00pm in the night. God, I'm so hungry. "hey" I greeted when I entered the kitchen. Ares was looking so hot while he cooked. He had loosened his tie and rolled up the sleeves of his shirt to his elbows. Every muscle in his body was flexing and it was hard not to check him out. "you hungry, beautiful?" he asked, flipping the spaghetti and sauce he had inside the pan like a freaking Italian cook! Even if I wasn't hungry, it sure looks delicious. "yeah. Very" I giggled. He chuckled and switched off the hotplate before turning the spaghetti into a white plate. He slid it over to me, drying his hands on a kitchen towel. I grabbed a fork from the stack, my mouth watering. "what about you?" I couldn't help but ask. "we could share" he smiled, picking up a fork also from the utensils stack and sitting down on the stool, opposite mine. The moment I took a bite out of it, I moaned from the deliciousness. Ares let out a bright chuckle, making me blush. "oh my God, this so good. I forgot how well you cooked" I giggled. Ares chewed on his food and I envied his actions. I was chewing like a cow, while he was eating so perfectly, without making any effort. "no you didn't. I was the best cook between us" he mused. Can't he just take a compliment and say 'thank you'?! "no you weren't" I argued "I was the best cook" "with what? Your French toast with hot chocolate all over it?" he chuckled. "hey! You loved my cooking!" I protested, laughing. "damn right, I did" he murmured, biting his bottom lip sexily. Oh excuse me, weren't we just making fun of each other and now he's making me heat up like tomatoes? "why did you leave, Leah?" he asked in sudden seriousness. Way to spoil the mood, Mr Knight. I lowered my head a little, trying to avoid the question but with his burning charcoal gaze, I couldn't. "I was scared, Ares" I muttered a light reply. Sneaking a peek at him, he was no more eating and so was I. He lowered his lashes in a sad demeanor, playing with his side of the food. This sight made me want to tear up, regretting my decisions. The air turned awkward and uncomfortable. I was desperately looking for an excuse to get away from the awkward tension, when Reina's cry was sounded from upstairs. I had never been this happy to hear her cry. "I'll go.......see if she's okay" I fumbled. Ares nodded his head, but his whole expression was something I didn't want to see. I flew out of my stool to escape this awkwardness and raced upstairs.
