Chapter 11: Day 9, A Compromised Position
Barbara fills me in on the information regarding Trent’s relationship with Peter Umbly. We drive to her sister’s house inland, heading toward St. Petersburg for a day of gambling. Barbara sits behind her Land Rover’s steering wheel, smokes one cigarette after the next, and fills the vehicle’s interior with smoke.
I wind my window down, enjoy the fresh air, and take in the sand, foliage, and highway. Thoughts of Trent and Peter surface, and I ask Barbara, “Is it true that Peter broke up Jessica’s wedding engagement with Trent Long?”
She lets out a thick sigh and says, “You will not let this Trent guy go, will you?”
