Matthew’s POV-
He attacked Eilith. I can’t believe he did that. No one should ever hurt a woman like that. Though the apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree. Dad helped cover up James' domestic violence charges. James was abusive to his wife, so I am not surprised that Dylan turned out the same. I just hope that I can get the report and necessary proof before it is swept under the rug. I was feeling a mixture of anger and disgust. My mum was horrified. James quickly left to go and deal with his wayward son. I shook my head, and Dad said, “This is the last straw for them too. Eilith said she comes from a wealthy family, which means they will have sway over things, and it is not like she can be paid off. James will be making a big mistake if he covers this up. It will not go away easily.”
“Well, what are you going to do,” Mum asked.
“I think it is time. I give them an ultimatum. One more mistake, one more cover up, and especially if the newspapers catch wind of this, then I will take back the company and disown both James and Dylan,” Dad said.
“Well, that ultimatum won’t stop them, especially Dylan. You saw how he was growing up. Remember the puppy he had that vanished, and then turned up dead. You remember how much I avoided him. People like them do not change so easily,” I scoffed.
“Well, what do you want me to do,” Dad said.
“It is up to you, but I just wanted to warn you that the ultimatum will not work, because it is far too late for that. Something should have been done with James way before Dylan was born,” I replied.
“Let’s just hope that it does work,” Mum said.
I nodded and stood up. I smiled, “Well, I must be off. I have a very early morning meeting tomorrow. I am going to be making arrangements to go aboard in a few months to start putting down business ties with other companies in other countries.”
“Make sure to take some time to rest and try to go out for a date every once in a while. You are not getting any younger, and I want more grandbabies,” Mum stood, and came over to embrace me.
“I will try,” I said, hugging her back.
I shook my dad’s hand, before wishing them farewell, and leaving to head to my car. I linked my phone up to my car, before pulling off down the driveway. I began dialing my police friend, Rob Devon. He answered almost immediately. Once he answered, I began driving to my home in the City of London.
Rob: “Hello, Matty. Did you get my text?”
Me: “Yes, I did. I was with my family. James got a call shortly after you texted me.”
Rob: “I knew someone from the police force had to be telling him and then helping him cover up the crimes your nephew did. He has made too many for someone not to be helping sweep them under the rug. Did you see the person’s name on his caller ID?”
Me: “Yes, I did. Obviously, my brother and his friend in the force, are as thick as too short blanks, because they appear to not have covered their tracks much. As he didn’t conceal his caller ID.”
Rob: “Well, who was it? So, I can bring this to the attention of the Chief of police.”
Me: “I think you are going to need some harder evidence before you go to him.”
Rob: “Why did you say that?”
Me: “Because it is Deputy Chief Higgins, who called my brother.”
Rob: “s**t! This is not good. I am going to have to find more evidence before I go to the Chief.”
Me: “I recently found out one of my old university buddies has joined MI5. So, I might be able to contact him and see if he can do anything to aid our situation. I also think it might be worth making a newspaper report.”
Rob: “But, wouldn’t that drag your name through the mud?”
Me: “Not if we do it right. We could go to the newspaper, with information about corruption in the superiors of the police force. If it gets enough media attention, then it could...”
Rob: “Trigger an internal investigation into those senior members. I can see if I can gain access to his phone records. Or maybe you can try to get your brother’s and then feed the information to me.”
Me: “Both are great ideas. See if you can gain access without raising suspicions and then contact me. If not, I will find a way to see if I can clone or copy his call history and texts.”
Rob: “Let me know if that buddy of yours can do anything or get anything.”
Me: “I will. One more thing, before you go. How is she? How is Eilith?”
Rob: “A couple of officers are talking to her now, to get her official statement. They have spoken and gotten statements from two of her friends, who had called us originally. She is quite badly hurt and had to undergo treatment before we could have a chance to talk with her. I also have the physical evidence in hand, and one of the officers’ taking statements is a friend of mine. He will give me hard copies of the statements. Eilith’s friend is collecting her own evidence, so they will not let this get covered up so easily. She has requested the medical report from the doctor and the statements given to the officers in hard copy form.”
Me: “So, she has friends looking after her and fighting for her.”
Rob: “Yes, she does. But there is one more thing you should know.”
Me: “What is that?”
Rob: “Your nephew thinks her name is Eilith Smith.”
Me: “That is the name she gave to my family too. Why is that important?”
Rob: “Because that is her mother’s maiden. Her given name is Eilith Clarke. She is the sole heiress to the Clarke family wealth.”
I must admit my jaw dropped.
Me: “Really? Why did she hide her real name?”
Rob: “Well, from what I know of her based on the databases here, she lost her parents in a car accident. The accident was deliberate. The other driver was arrested for murdering them. I don’t know what happened to her after that, but my guess is her grandparents, her father’s parents, took her in. I believe they probably got her to use her mother’s maiden name so that she can be safer in the wide world, and people won’t get to know her because of her vast wealth.”
Me: “Christ. That is a lot to take in.”
Rob: “It is indeed. But I need to get back to work. I will text you when I have something.”
Me: “I will do the same. Thank you, Rob. Talk soon.”
Rob cut the call off. I kept driving home. I was shocked, to say the least. Why did Eilith hide such a thing from a family like ours? Did she always have a distrust of Dylan, or was it a habit? I must admit that I wanted to drive to the hospital to find her. There is a huge part of me that wanted to go take care of her and help her. But I doubt she would trust me right now. I do not know how the hell I would earn her trust, right now. I decided to drive home and stay there for now. I headed home. My home was a penthouse flat in a high rise in Central London, as it was closer to my company’s headquarters.
When I got into my home, I decided to do some work. I had to look over some CVs sent in for a position as a personal assistant to one of my executives. I was utterly surprised when I saw one name. I guess fate has its way of helping us all meet and find someone we want to see again.
