MELANIE:
“McWell, stop daydreaming and get to work.” My boss Mr. Holland yelled. I nodded my head as I walked to my table where a woman and a man was sitting. “Good afternoon, my name is Melanie and I’ll be your server for today.” I said while placing the napkin and silverware on the table. “What can I start you two off to drink today?” I asked no one in particular.
“I’ll go first sweetie.” The woman said. “Can I get a sweet tea with a lemon please?” I nodded and wrote it down. “And for you sir?” I said. “Yea ma.” He started but was cut off. “August be respectful.” The woman said and I chuckled. “I’ll get a sprite.” He said keeping it plain and simple. And I wrote that down also. “I’ll be right back with y’alls drinks.” I said before walking off.
After I served my table, Mr. Holland called me into his office. I sighed and closed the door behind me. He motioned me to have a seat and I sat down getting ready for whatever he had to say. “Mrs. Melanie, do you know why I invited you into my office today?” He asked. “No sir.” I simple said and shook my head.
“Well this is my second time I had to tell you about staring off into space while you’re on my time, not your owns and you constantly arriving late.” He stated and I sighed. “I apologize for my tardiness and for dazing off into space, I just had a hard time finding a sitter for my little girl please don’t fire me.” I practically begged, this was the only place that would hire me since I dropped out of college in the beginning of my senior year since I had my baby girl and I’m trying the best I could.
“I understand Ms. McWell but I’m steadying having complaints from the customers and even your team members but I’m not going to fire you but you have one more strike and Ik have to let you go.” He said and I let out a sigh of relief. “Now, go back out there and do your job.”
After I left work, I went home to see Brittany my neighbor’s daughter and Arielle fast asleep on the couch. “Brittany, honey you can go now, thanks for watching her for me.” I said as she sat up and stretched her body parts. “No problem girl she was a doll as always.” She said as I handed her two twenty dollar bills and watched her walk home.
