Alicia's POV. I have been locked up here for the past three weeks. It might be more than that, but I had lost count already. No food, no water, no sunlight, just shut out of the world. No one came looking for me, not even my father, not like I was expecting him, but a part of me had hoped that he would show up. My stomach rumbled as I rolled around in the mud, I felt a rat scurry under my feet but I didn't flinch, I had gotten used to it already. The smell, the mud, the dirt and the rodents. I gripped my stomach in pain as another wave of vomit threatened to spill. I held on tight, willing myself not to. I have been experiencing the same set of emotions since I got locked up here. Thirst, hunger, pain, sadness, I could keep listing them if I had all day. I couldn't bring myself to move from the dirt-covered floor that I lay on, I was too hungry and thirsty to move. I tried gulping down my saliva but there was nothing left to swallow, my lips glued down on each other. I could feel myself moving closer to death, I could hear the gates to the afterlife unlocking to welcome me, lights flashed into the room and I felt my heartbeat pause for a moment, Finally, the moon goddess has decided to end my misery. It's time to leave this wretched world, I thought. "Hey!" A loud voice echoed in the room as someone kicked my feet. "Do you think she's dead?" I blinked rapidly, trying to wrap my head around the reason why I could see light and feel the presence of someone else in the room. Is this what an afterlife is supposed to feel and sound like? I licked my lips, forcing myself to speak, but nothing came out. "I think she's dead. I knew she wouldn't make it, I mean, three weeks without food or water! It would be a miracle if she..." "Wait!" The first voice yelled out, "I think she is moving." I opened my mouth again to speak but I couldn't make a sound. I kept trying until I made a pathetic whimpering sound that got the men's attention. I opened my eyes to find two guards holding a lantern over me, their faces looking down at me in astonishment. "How is she alive?" The second man asked, his eyes never leaving my face, but I didn't care about that. I needed water. "Wa... Wa... Water." I managed to stammer but they couldn't even hear me. I swallowed hard and tried again, "Water!" I managed to call out. "Wait. I think she said something." He bent down to listen but immediately drew back, he pinched his nostrils shut. "Ugh! She smells." "Come on! The Alpha has requested to meet with you." The first guard said as he grabbed me and pulled me up. I couldn't stand on my own, my legs felt wobbly but he didn't care, he simply dragged me along. The moment we stepped into the daylight, I took a deep breath, taking in the fresh air, a basic need I had been deprived of for so long. They kept dragging me until we arrived at my room. They tossed me inside and shut the door behind them. I landed face-flat on the floor. "We don't have time, you need to take a bath and get dressed. You of all people should know you can't keep the Alpha waiting." I willed myself with whatever strength I had left to look up at who had spoken. It was Rosa, the head maid. She worked for one mistress only and that's Anna. I wondered why she was there. "Get up." She ordered and pulled me to my feet. I collapsed on her fat frame, she hissed and assisted me to the bathtub. It felt so nice to be inside the water, the water lapped at my skin as she applied soap over my body. I closed my eyes and submerged myself in it. By the time she was done, I had gained enough strength to step out of the bathtub by myself. She had laid out a plain blue dress for me to wear, I slipped it on and she quickly ran a comb through my hair. "Can I get water and something to eat?" I asked, but she simply ignored me as if I had not said anything. I asked again and this time, she looked straight at me in the mirror with disdain. "We don't have time for that, he is waiting." I decided to get one by myself on my way to the throne room but the moment I stepped out of the room, the guards from earlier on walked up to me and gestured for me to follow them. I walked behind them with my head bowed in shame. I didn't want to see him, I despised him for letting me rot in there for weeks without showing up. They escorted me to the entrance of the throne room and shoved me inside. I stumbled but managed to gain my balance before I crashed into the floor. "Alicia! Finally!" I heard my father's voice. I looked up to find him looking as healthy as ever on his throne. I walked up to him with my head bowed, angry yet afraid of what he would do to me now. "Since you have failed to secure a mate, I thought I would be generous enough to give you another mission, at least to keep you from rotting away in that hell hole." Generous? Did he just say generous? I scoffed. I clenched and unclenched my fists. How can he be my father? He never treated me like his child. In fact, he always reminded me that my mother was a lowly servant that had pinned a pregnancy on him to save herself from a life of poverty. He claims the moon goddess had punished her by taking her life during childbirth. Everyone in the kingdom blamed me for her death and took every chance to rub it in. "Are you even listening to me?" He bellowed. I looked up sharply. I had been lost in thought for a few seconds. I shook my head in fear and he sighed in disappointment. "This is what you get when a servant gives you a child," he hissed, "why can't you be more like Anna? She has a mate and has managed to build a name and a reputation for herself in the pack." This isn't new, he always made me feel worthless while praising Anna. She is the daughter he had always wanted, while I am his greatest disappointment. "You have to deliver a message to the neighboring pack, it's important. That's why I am sending you." I could feel his gaze on me, "Don't f*** this up, Alicia." He added. "If it wasn't important for a member of the ruling family to deliver the message, then I wouldn't have sent you. Leave it to me and Anna is the best person for this..." "I understand father, I would try not to disappoint you." I cut him off, tired of his obsession with Anna. "Take what you need and leave. I will be awaiting your response." I had been standing for so long that my legs were already threatening to disappear from under me. I took a curt bow and hurried out of the throne room. Now, I had to find something to eat. No one offered me anything at all, it was as if they had not just taken me out of a room where I had been locked up for weeks without the basic needs of life. On my way out of the house, I grabbed some food from the kitchen, ate to my satisfaction, and then stuffed enough in my bag. I entered the garage to pick up a car that would be suitable for an errand like this, but I couldn't find the valet anywhere, so I walked up to his station, "Hey! Can I get the keys to the..." "Sorry miss, but the Alpha had been clear with his order that you are not to leave with any of the cars." He said quickly, I could tell that he couldn't wait to get rid of me. "What?" I can't believe this, he really would go this far to make my life hell. I sighed and turned around, I would have to figure this out on my own. But it wasn't the trip that scared me, it was the fact that I might encounter rogue wolves on my way. They are very common around these parts. If they so much as caught the scent of my heat, I would prefer not to imagine the things they would do.
