"It's nothing you should concern yourself with, Uncle," Jayden said, waking me from my shock and I turned to face them.
" I came all the way for that. I'd like to know how the infamous Lauren had her manuscript rejected. It's a first for me," he made it sound like she was high and mighty in the company but she couldn't deny that her skills were sometimes talked about and praised.
Why was he doing this anyways? She remembered how he acted this morning and Lauren almost burned with embarrassment, she couldn't even look him in the eye. Did she really have to be here?
" Please excuse me. I'll go work on it again-"
He was grabbing her wrist before she could move a muscle. His eyes were unimpressed and they narrowed at her as his mouth opened to say just one word, "Stay."
He let her go just after a few minutes and was back to questioning her supervisor. Lauren took some time to recover from his strange behaviour. Wasn't he the same man who was scowling at her and implying she would bring shame to the family name?
If any trouble maker paid attention, they'd think she was starting to catch the president's eye. From vice president to president, the gossip will never let her hear the last of it.
" Complicated, you say," Leo repeated after her supervisor. " Are you implying that she made a manuscript that's above your skill?"
Mrs. Smith stuttered as she fumbled with her words.
" Maybe we should make Lauren the supervisor and place you under her. You could learn a thing or two," he suggested and her face turned pale.
" There's nothing wrong with the manuscript. I'm approving it. Don't waste time on such trivial drama and try to bash out a good idea. You could've cost our company a lot of money. I'm having your bonus deducted for this month, maybe next time you'll pay better attention before raising a complaint."
His cold voice rang out in the room and Mrs. Smith couldn't say a word. She lowered her head, accepting her punishment with a tight apology--
" You shouldn't be saying that to me," Leo said. " I'm not the one you embarrassed, am I?"
" Y-Yes, sir. Mrs. Lauren, I'm really sorry for how I spoke to you and for-"
Lauren was frozen in shock, she couldn't believe her prideful supervisor was capable of such words. Was this the power of Leo Williams? His coldness could outrun even the coldest of ice. He was in another league.
" It's fine, Mrs. Smith. It's over now," she said and stole glances at Leo who was already staring. She quickly looked away and excused herself.
Leo, however, had other plans, " Everyone out, Lauren stay."
Jayden was boiling in his blood where he was seated. He had been looking forward to Lauren's punishment. A little overtime should set her head straight and make her realise she wasn't acting like she should but Leo just had to come and ruin it.
What happened to always taking each other's side?
" Lauren, would you excuse us for a moment?" Jayden asked. "I'd like to have a word with my uncle."
She couldn't care less about the two. She didn't even want to be there in the first place so she gladly stepped out.
" What was that about?" Jayden asked as soon as she shut the door behind her.
" What was what?" Leo asked his nephew as he took a look around his office. His style hadn't changed. Everything was still flashy.
"You overruled my-"
"Overruled?" Leo scoffed with a smirk on his lips. " What is this? A court?"
" You know what I mean, uncle!" Jayden half yelled through his gritted teeth. He hated that Lauren had to go scot free. That was his chance to punish her.
Jayden always expected Leo to stand by his side and he had always done that, why did he have to turn against him now? " You could've just stayed out of it."
" You're serious? I didn't think I wanted you to say it but, what is wrong with you, Jayden?" He folded his arms, giving him a pointed stare that made Jayden sit up as he knew he was about to be lectured.
" You were going to trash a perfect manuscript and all for what? Are you slacking on your skills already? It's too early for that or do you need some time off because I won't let you bring down this company-"
" It was just one manuscript," Jayden grumbled, avoiding his gaze. "And besides, it didn't look so good to me anyways. It's not like I did it on purpose," he said in his defence.
" You owe her an apology-"
" What! No way-"
Leo glared and Jayden grumbled, he knew he couldn't win when his uncle was in business mode.
" Fine!" He glanced away. " I'll do that later-"
" You'll do it right now," Leo told him with a firm attitude that Jayden couldn't disobey.
He put a call across to Sophia, asking her to send Lauren back into the office. She opened the door and poked her head in, looking at both of them with curiosity on her face.
What did they want this time? She didn't want to be between the two nor did she want anything related to them.
" I'm sorry about my judgement," Jayden said so fast that her ears doubted what they heard. He didn't look any but remorseful, if anything, he was even pissed that he was apologising to her.
It was obvious who was making him do it.
" As a compensation, you can request for anything -"
" There'll be no need for that, Mr. Williams. I accept your apology but I must say I was disappointed when the case was brought to you and you did what you did."
It was worth coming all the way here for, Leo thought. Her boldness amused him, it was also one of the things that Jayden was fascinated about and Leo had always wanted to see it in person.
"All that matters now is that we finalise the papers and get this over and done with. I wouldn't want to hold you down for too long," she threw his words back at him. He had told her to let him go as if their marriage was a bondage that he needed saving from.
Jayden glanced at his clueless uncle, he didn't want Leo to get the gist of their conversation but he also couldn't postpone this until later.
" I told you already, we can reconsider. After all, we're not the only parties involved in this. Don't forget your father and my family have a lot to gain from our... Uhm... Cooperation. It's also in your best interest."
If her father found out that she divorced Jayden Williams, Lauren would be in a lot of trouble. She knew this but the fact that he was bringing it up again showed her how much her marriage was mere words on papers.
He had never loved her all these years, he was only acting out of duty for his company.
" You don't have to worry about that. That's my cross to carry," did he think acting as the perfect ex husband would get her back together with him?
She had seen all the signs of his intimacy with Sophia but she decided to turn a blind eye and hope that he would come back to his senses but she was wrong.
" I didn't think you love birds would ever get divorced," Leo already got the gist of the conversation. " But, I'll stay out of it," he knew there was more they weren't saying but he wasn't about to involve himself in the conversation.
" Since the divorce hasn't been made public yet, you'll still have to attend the banquet like you're still together," he informed her. "Bear with it."
Lauren wrinkled her brows, "What banquet?" She glanced between the two. She wasn't informed about any.
" The business banquet you were informed about a month ago?" Leo specified. " Did you forget?"
It was absurd for her to forget something so important. Only important families will be there and she was a wife of the Williams house.
"Well, I can't forget what I was never informed about, can I?" She folded her arms as she pursed her lips at Jayden who kept his eyes on the floor.
" I was going to tell you-"
" Clearly you weren't!" She snapped. "Phew! It's not my business anymore. You were going to take her, weren't you?"
Jayden shot his head up to defend himself with guilt written on his face, "Lauren I-"
" In that case, Lauren, you should come with me instead. It doesn't matter who you go with, as long as you're with one of the Williams-"
"Uncle, you can't do that-"
" Yes, sir," she nodded, ignoring Jayden's shock. "I'll go with you.”
