The party was bubbly with people of high class and status. Their outfits were all high end and their jewellery sparkled as much as their smiles as they said their greetings to each other.
Jayden dresses no different from the rest of the upperclassmen; neither did his date. He walked in with Sophia's arm linked in his and her silver dress sparkled, drawing the attention.
The people who had seen Mrs. Williams on little occasions were very surprised to see her dress so loud.
" Mrs. Williams, you look so pretty, OhmyGod! I love your dress."
Sophia's smile widened as she exchanged pleasantries with them. She knew fully well they thought she was Lauren but she didn't care. Just being addressed as Mrs. Williams made her head swell.
She had never felt this much attention in all her life. She felt on top of the world having tasted just a tip of what Lauren was constantly showered with.
Now that they were divorced, she could finally fit in as the new Mrs. Williams and no one would suspect a thing.
"Oh, Lauren," a woman called and suddenly approached her. "I told you to find me as soon as possible. Why didn't you come to me first?" She pouted a little as she held her by the shoulder in a motherly way.
" Sorry to bother you, Mr. Williams but I'd like to borrow your wife--" Mrs. Lynn halted in her words as she took a closer look at the clueless woman who was obviously startled by their conversation right now.
"Who are you?" She asked with a frown on her face as she stepped away from the imposter.
" What?" Sophia feigned ignorance as she looked around nervously, not wanting to disappoint the others and stop her high praise. "What do you mean? I-It's me-"
" I might be old, child but I'm not stupid," Mrs. Lynn said with a straight face and lifted her eyes to Jayden. "What is the meaning of this? Was this your doing? To fool everyone?"
That wasn't Jayden's plan-- no, it was and he had just been caught red-handed. He knew he couldn't get out of this, there were so many eyes watching.
"M-Mrs. Lynn, why don't we take this elsewhere-"
" Did you take this imposter elsewhere?" The woman asked, raising her voice to give the others the gist of what was going on. "First, your wife is missing from such an important event and you thought you could deceive us by bringing an imposter?"
"So she's not Mrs. Williams?" One of the women who had praised her dress asked and her face was turned down in disdain.
" If she's not then why is he holding her like she's his wife? What's the meaning of this? Are we fools?"
The tides soon turned against Sophia as their words nearly devoured her as the guests were harsher with their eyes than with their mouths.
She clung onto Jayden for help but she met with a shaken man, affected by their judgement.
At the same time, Leo stepped into the scene with Lauren on his arm, confused as to why his nephew was in the midst of what seemed like angry mobs in sophisticated fashion. He shared a confused glance with Lauren before walking closer to the scene.
"What is going on here?" He asked with a bold voice and he drew their attention. He noticed their eyes remained on Lauren and he wondered why.
" Thank goodness, you're here," Mrs. Lynn stepped forward as she hugged the real Lauren, feeling safe now. " I was so scared just standing over there, I wondered if the world had come to an end!" She said dramatically.
" What's going on?" Lauren asked, her eyes falling on her shaken ex husband and his terrified mistress.
" You wouldn't believe that woman tried to pose as you!" Mrs. Lynn accused. " And your husband let her! I was so angry when I thought you weren't going to attend-"
" Please be rest assured that the Williams family will continue to support events such as this one and we won't be as rude as not to attend. Kindly ignore my nephew's unreasonable behaviour," he glared at Jayden who lowered his head, feeling scolded again.
"Mrs. Lauren and I will be attending on behalf of the Williams family. My nephew and his... Guest have something rather minor to take care of... Right now."
His words were final and the two found their escape. For Sophia, she was relieved to finally be out of there. It felt as though they were going to eat her up and all for what? Boring, plain Lauren? She liked to believe she was the better version and that was simply why their resemblance was striking.
"Where are you going?" She asked when she saw Jayden storming away with his fist clenched by his side. His shoulders were stiff and she had not yet seen the heavy frown he was sprouting.
"Jayden!" She called after him as she chased him down the street with her heels strapped to her feet. It was uncomfortable and her feet were starting to hurt. "Slow down!"
Jayden ignored her cries. He had enough to deal with by himself already. If news of his stupidity reached his father or Charles- Lauren's father, he would never hear the last of it.
Once again, Leo had scolded him all because of Lauren. He had taken her side and treated him like he couldn't make a single decision for himself.
Jayden felt cast aside and stopped by at a bar to drink. His thoughts were filled with Lauren and how indifferent she looked when he walked out of the event. Was that the same woman he married three years ago? She didn't even show an ounce of concern or remorse for him.
Sophia took her time in bringing the car around since she saw him enter a bar but by the time she did, he was already drunk.
He was cupping her face and smiling to himself and while she should blush at his actions, every word he spoke wasn't directed at her, he was simply seeing his ex-wife's face.
She helped him into the car, slammed the door shut in annoyance and drove down the road, gritting her teeth as tears blurred her vision.
She was hurt and felt betrayed. She used to wonder what Jayden saw in her but deep down, it felt as though she knew the answer to that.
Sophia concluded that she'd had a long day already and just wanted to drop Jayden home. She wiped her tears when she suddenly turned the wheels sharply in order to avoid a truck.
The car drifted off the road and into a nearby shop, driving straight into it and her screams filled the air.
Jayden jerked out of his drunken state, looking around to see Sophia slumped against the steering wheel, passed out from the accident. Her head was bleeding.
His heart jumped in panic and on instinct, he dialled her number, pressing it against his ear as it rang with his pants heavy in his own ears.
Why? Why was she taking so long to pick up? She would always answer on the first ring or on the second one.
"Hello?" Her voice was a relief to his ears but he soon remembered their divorce. His moment was cut short and he bit his lip in anger.
Since they had dated for over ten years, they were very close and would often share every experience with each other. It was only natural for him to reach out to her first.
"What do you want, Jayden? You called, don't put me in silence and make me feel stupid."
This wasn't the wife he knew anymore.
"There's been an accident. I'm at," he took a look around, swallowing the hard pill that she sounded too cold and distant. "XX street."
The phone went dead for a while and he thought she hung up but the music in the background kept him company.
"Hurry, Lauren. We need help."
"We?" She asked.
" Yes. Sophia and I.”
