CHAPTER 11: DRAWN TO HER

2151 Words
ICARUS I woke up to Freya curled up beside me. She was sound asleep, snoring softly. It was clear she was not about to wake up anytime soon, almost like she did not sleep all night. “Such a sleepyhead…” I chuckled, watching her as she slept soundly. Her blonde lashes fluttered lightly, fanning her cheeks which looked cute and chubbier because of how she laid on the bed. The moments we shared the night before filled my mind as I watched her. At that moment, all the fierceness seemed to be at rest and she looked so peaceful. Why was she always so angry? Her piercing blue eyes always burned with a fire, one that seemed to consume you the more you looked at her. Freya was different. It was hard to decipher her next move. She was like an enigma; unpredictable, unstable and incomprehensible, but I found myself being drawn to her. It was beyond her ethereal beauty or physique, it was more like an unseen force pulling us together and it seemed to wax stronger everyday. She was like a puzzle I wanted to solve, a tangled string I was eager to untie, no matter how frustrating it was. “Oh, Freya…” I muttered, tucking a piece of stray hair on her face behind her ears. With my index finger, I shut her partly opened lips before slowly easing out of the bed to use the bathroom. A few moments later, I came out to see Freya tiptoeing towards the door. I was taken aback and a little confused. Why was she trying to escape like she was a prisoner? Leaning on the wall next to the bathroom door, I watched her, a bit amused by her actions. She made it to the door, but she had barely turned the doorknob when I decided to make my presence known to her. “Leaving without saying goodbye?” I asked her and she froze on the spot, her back still turned towards me. I shook my head, walking up to her in her frozen state. “Why did you want to leave without telling me?” I asked her after coming to a stop a few paces before her. Wearing a grimace, she slowly turned around and her eyes slightly widened, drinking in every inch of me from my head to my toes. Her eyes seemed to have a mind of their own as they raked every inch of my bare skin. Was she checking me out? I could have sworn she was disgusted by me after I tried to kiss her and she gagged, almost throwing up on my face. It was amusing and somewhat satisfying to watch her shamelessly ogle at me. I was used to it actually, but coming from Freya? That made it a bit more special. It felt good to know that she found me somewhat attractive, even though she pretended she did not. “Done undressing me with your eyes?” I asked her as the corner of my lips lifted up in a smirk. Her entire face heated up, turning an ugly shade of red as she blushed in embarrassment. She scoffed afterwards, looking away from me. “You are delusional to think I would ever want you that way.” Freya said, a frown marring her beautiful face. I took brisk steps towards her, stopping right in front of her. Resting against the wall next to her, I lifted her face with my finger as I leaned in to her. We were so close that I could see the tiny brown freckles splashed on her face, just along the bridge of her nose. Her shaky eyes scanned my face, unable to stare at mine for too long. I could feel tension oozing from her, one she could not deny, so I whispered in her ears. “Your eyes say different, Freya. You can't deny it.” At that moment, she looked directly into my eyes, narrowing hers at me. “You know nothing about the language my eyes speak. ” she said, holding my gaze for a heated moment before turning round and exiting the room. The door slammed shut after she left, leaving echoes in her wake. I chuckled to myself. I was slowly weaving my way into her heart, but she was too stubborn to admit that I had an effect on her. I wondered what she was so afraid of. Was she scared of being hurt? Maybe she has been hurt really bad before. That was a valid reason, and it would explain her unprovoked anger towards me. But I was not the one who hurt her. So why was she always taking out her anger on me? I walked away from the door, over to my desk where a few stationery sat. I tried to get some work done, but it was hard to concentrate when my mind was filled with thoughts of Freya. How do I break through that wall she had erected in her heart? Then an idea popped up in my head, one that I was sure would reveal a part of Freya that she had hidden from sight. I grabbed a piece of paper, scribbling on it. Get ready Freya, we are going for a ride this afternoon. I got something special planned out for us today. – I. Donovan I read through what I had written, and my stomach churned with uneasiness. Was it too curt? Too short? Not convinced enough? Without another thought, I slipped it into an envelope, sealing it with the golden seal. I slid it into my pocket, pulling a shirt over my head before walking out of my room. As I headed towards Freya's room, I could feel the pounding of my heart against my ribcage. I arrived in front of her door and tremor continued to rise in my wolf. I had fought vampire armies and destroyed witches without an ounce of fear. But asking Freya to go out with me made my wolf tremble? “Icarus fears no one.” I muttered, exhaling a shaky breath before landing a knock on her door. “Who is there?” Her voice filled my ears but instead of answering, I quickly slipped the envelope through the space under her door. I knew she was going to open the door and look around for who might have dropped the envelope and I did not want her to see me, so I disappeared from sight as fast as I could. I slowed down my steps when I drew closer to my room and I imagined Freya reading the note and tossing it into the trash. That was a lot like her, but I knew I could only hope that she agreed. However, a part of me was confident she was going to give in. She could not pretend she did not want to be around me. I went back to my chambers to have brunch and immediately afterwards, I began to get ready for my date with Freya. After I was fully dressed, I stood in front of my mirror, smiling at my own reflection. I wore a pair of black pants and a dark blue flannel shirt buttoned half way up. “Let's do this…” I said to myself, rubbing my palms together before heading for the door. I ensured I picked up the bouquet of roses I had gotten for her before I left. As I stood in front of Freya's door, my insides felt a different way and I wiped my hands on my pants before knocking. Faint footsteps followed, before the door opened up to reveal Freya, standing in front of me looking stunning as ever. “Hello Miss Freya.” my lips lifted in a smile and I pulled my hands from behind me, handing her the bouquet of roses. “Why, thank you, gentleman.” Freya said with a smile, taking the flowers from my hands. As she did, our fingers grazed each other and it sent a jolt of electricity through me, one I knew she felt as well. “Um…” she stuttered, avoiding my eyes. “I will just...put these in an empty vase.” She hurried back into her room, leaving me mesmerised. My skin still hummed under her touch as I followed after her into her room. She had found a vase and she placed the flowers inside the vase, only to turn around to see me standing right behind her. “I know it is your castle and all, but who let you in? Because I really do not remember doing so.” She said, arms crossed over her chest and eyes gleaming with defiance as it stared into mine. Here we go with Freya's smart mouth again. It was pretty obvious she was being a brat to cover up how she felt a moment ago. I could not have been the only one who felt that. “Please.” I scoffed. “Enough of the pretence that you do not like my presence here. ” She rolled my eyes at my response and without a word, she walked over to her vanity to brush her already neat hair. Since she decided to ignore my statement, I might as well state my reason for coming to her room. “Anyway, You are ready to go, right?” I asked her and she nodded, picking up her purse before walking towards the door. As she drew closer to me, I jutted out my elbow for her to hold on to and she eyed it for a moment, a lot longer than was necessary. “This is where you hold on to it…?” I explained and she scoffed. “I know that. I just do not want to hold you.” She shrugged, walking towards the door. She stopped halfway, turning round to see me staring at her in disbelief. “Well?” she raised an eyebrow at me, gesturing towards the door. “Are we going for the ride or not?” “So...are we racing against each other?” Freya asked as we walked out of the castle. I turned to her, a snicker escaping my lips before I could stop myself. “I did not know you could drive…” I mentioned and she looked at me, perplexed. “Drive?” Freya asked, her face scrunched up in confusion. “Yeah.” I replied. “Or can't you? Well, That was not the original plan for today but if you want, we could make plans for that another day.” Her confused expression made me wonder if we were talking about the same thing. The driver had brought the car up front, so I opened the door for Freya and she hesitantly got in. She looked around the vehicle like it was some treasure, something she had never set her eyes on before. I joined her from the other side of the door, making myself comfortable as Freya continued to look around the car. The driver soon turned on the ignition and Freya jumped in shock. “Hey, relax, you are safe.” I chuckled, taking her hand in mine. “He just turned on the car.” “Oh…” She said, looking away in embarrassment. Freya's fascination when she first got in made me suspect that she had never been in a car before, but her reaction after the driver turned on the ignition was enough to confirm my suspicion. “I can tell you have never been in a car before.” I mentioned. “You don't say.” She rolled her eyes, looking out the window as the driver rode away into the unknown. That was all I needed to know, and once again it made me wonder where exactly Freya had lived all her life before now. Everything seemed to interest her. The gigantic trees in the woods, the tall mountains peeking through the horizon, the green landscape and even the tall city walls. I still had not revealed where we were headed, and I knew it was only a matter of time before she asked me. We had been on the road for a while now and that was when Freya suddenly asked. “Where are we going?” A knowing smile tugged on my lips and I replied. “You will see…” She flared up. “That is unfair! You need to give me a clue, at least.” Freya huffed and I burst into a deep laughter, shaking my head. She watched me laugh, keeping a straight face until I eventually sobered up. I guess it was time to tell her where we were going, as we were already close to our destination. “Freya...Have you ever been to the human world?”
