Chapter 2Arnie woke up. He checked the clock on his bedstand—2:36. What had awakened him? Then he heard it: a soft whining coming from beyond the end of the bed.
He switched on the bed lamp, got up, and walked around to the foot of the bed. The dog raised her head and whined, this time louder. Arnie knelt beside her.
“What’s wrong, girl?” he asked as he stroked her head.
She whined again, this time she seemed to be straining and nipping at her side. Arnie looked her over.
“Oh, my God!” he exclaimed. “Jason! Jason wake up! She’s having contractions.”
“Who’s having contractions?” came a sleepy voice.
“The dog! Jason, get up. She’s having puppies!”
Jason swung his legs off the bed and got up. He came around, scratching his balls and yawning.
