My feet squished in the mud as I stepped back onto the sidewalk, the wind nipping through my shivering body. Crossing my arms trying to hold in my warmth, I stare at the man before me. Just as the first time I had seen him, he was wearing an expensive-looking black suit, the red tie making his steel eyes seem much brighter. His dark hair was pushed neatly back, the straight locks tucked behind one ear. His expression looked amused, and my already bad mood seemed to be getting worse.
"What are you doing here?" I questioned the man before me. He was an incredibly good-looking man, and I could not help but look him up and down. Noticing a very expensive car sat behind him, its cherry red color popped brightly against the dull mud and gray skies.
"Waiting." He smiled, and his pearly white teeth peeked behind his lips. "She's a beauty, huh?" Touching the hood of the car, he ran his hand toward the passenger door, stoking the car as if it was his baby. The square shape only accented the expensive paintwork, and the expensive look. Rolling my eyes, I stare at him. His gaze didn't break mine, and he looked more amused than before.
"I mean, it's a nice car." I looked at the car again, its red paint was glistening like fresh blood. "Red is actually my favorite color.." I looked back at him, and he had moved two paces towards me. Taking a step back, I felt on edge with this situation. I didn't need this, I got to get to a bus stop. I'm going to leave this dreaded place that treats me like no one.
"I can't let you leave by yourself." His voice was deep, and the threat behind it immediately had my blood pumping and my heart thundering like a drum in my ear.
"What do you mean? They said I was released..." Was I really? What was going on?...
"Because of me." His confirmation ringing clear in his voice. My heart sank as the dots started to click. "You are technically a minor for a little over two months still, Athena." My name sounded like honey and venom at the same time through his lips. "I have become your guardian, and I will be taking you to a new school. You are getting a fresh start but under my rules." His steel eyes pierced like arrows through me. I was so close to just being me, of disappearing and never coming back. Weighing my options, I looked from the muddy path back to him and his car, the fancy El Camino. Its warmth tempted me as the air nipped harder into my skin, goosebumps rose in my skin, and it was nearly painful with bruising that I still had.
"Fine." I looked at the amusement in his face. He knew as much as I did that I didn't have a choice. "But, if you touch me," I pointed a finger his way, "I won't hesitate to rip your throat out like a wild animal." The threat finalized with the daggers that I stared his direction. He put a hand on his chest and faked a hurt expression.
"Please." He scoffed, "I am a gentleman." The smile at the end not quite meeting his eyes, this man gave me the jitters thoroughly. As he was opening the passenger door, I walked slowly over. I felt like a wild animal being thrown from one cage to the next. Pausing before I sat, I looked at him.
"I am serious, if you got me out. You know what put me in." I looked at him hard and his expression softened for a minute.
"I thought you said it wasn't your fault?" He asked, and I didn't grant him the answer. Sitting down on the seat, I swung my feet into the car and put them on the floor board. The black leather bench seat put little distance between the two seats. As he climbed to his side, he sat without a word, and he roared the engine to life. Looking at me, his expression seemed to be softer. I wonder how much he actually knows. "Seat belt, please." His voice was deep, and came out softer than before.
Clipping the metal link into its port, I tightened it slightly before putting both hands into my lap and looking out the window. The engine roared as the car was put into motion, and we backed out, before taking off towards the gate. The metal chain-link squealed as the pulley system seemed to struggle to open it. A light patter started to hit the windows, as the car picked up speed and drove further away from the jail, and from civilization, my heart raced with the rhythm.
"It's a long drive, we will probably stop at a motel to get some rest and some real food for you." His voice cut through the silence, and at the promise of food my stomach growled loudly. Looking at him, I caught his smile as he stared forward. Rolling my eyes, I ignored his arrogance and stared out the window, the soft pattering dulling out the hunger and pain of the real world as I drifted off.
---JAME'S POV---
The lavender and strawberry smell had faded from the girl, her enticing green eyes had looked impossibly dull. Looking over at her, her long brown hair flows in long tangles of waves. Her soft even breathing indicated she must have drifted off. My eyes drift back to the road, I can move faster than this vehicle, and the school was a lie. For some reason, I couldn't walk away from this girl. I took this girl against every rule that my kingdom stands for. Humans are food, and us vampires are dwindling fast. Her green eyes captivated me though, and her story is one that is even sadder.
Thinking back to when I flipped through the files, I recall what I read. This young girl, Athena Platz, had quite the record already. But this was a huge step compared to the usual petty theft and running away. Her file stated that her father had tried to take advantage of her, pictures of massive bruising covered her back, scattered across her stomach and other parts of her body like freckles. Busted lips and a black eye that still showed its purple red tint today. Looking over again, the demon roars in my head to take vengeance against her father for her. Not only did she stab her father in retaliation, but they are stating she tampered with her mother's narcotics, causing her to overdose. I have an impeccable memory, and I have lived through many centuries. Her file tugged at my cold heart though. I only typically take criminals as live food bags. Fresh blood is always so much better. This poor girl has suffered tremendously though, years ago, she lost her grandmother. She was her original caretaker and the mother lost herself after her death. Reports have been filed over the last several years of the abuse and of drug use. It is a big city though, her file was just continuously shoved down. In my kingdom, with me as ruler, crimes like that are punished by death. Humans are filthy vermin, always taking whatever they please, as long as they are on top, they don't care who it hurts. An hour slips by, the rain and thunder drowning out the motor of the engine. For whatever reason I took her, I hope it doesn't go badly.
