Lucas POV
"Liam it's time to go"
"Lucas if we leave now we are going to get there too early, forgive me for saying this but you have waited for this for five years. Surely another hour isn't going to kill you?"
It certainly f*****g felt like it would! I growled a warning at Liam and he put his hands up in a surrendering gesture "Whoa, take it easy Alpha". I scowled at him and left his office, having my younger brother as my Beta was as rewarding as it was irritating! I returned to my own office and I sat at my desk. I looked at the stack of paperwork in front of me. I had millions of pack stuff to do but I just couldn't concentrate. I started to pace back and forward between my desk and the large bay window at the end of the room.
My wolf was restless. He knew where we were going and why. As far as he was concerned we could not get there fast enough. "She is OURS" he kept repeating in my head. "It's much more complicated than that" I told him for about the millionth time that day!! "She is our mate, nothing else matters." I sighed, if only it was as simple as my wolf was making out. If I gave my self over to him and she gave herself over to her wolf then that's exactly how it would be. Unfortunately that was unlikely to happen!
April Miller had been haunting my dream since the night of the accident. Back then I thought her sister Megan had been my mate. I had been drawn to Megan from the moment we met. She wasn't my type of girl at all. Her blonde hair and blue eyes made her pretty but that wasn't enough to keep me interested. It was her scent.... It was very subtle but my wolf reacted to it straight away. It was sunshine and orchids and it made my mouth water. My wolf and I put it down to her being our future mate. When we met she was not of mature age, I was going to have to wait almost a year before she was old enough to be claimed as mine. I am not a very patient person, but that scent alone was worth waiting for.
The first time I set foot inside her house I almost lost my mind. The smell was stronger in the house and it took every ounce of self control I had not to lose myself to my wolf. It was like I had been waiting for that smell for my entire life.
Megan introduced me to her mum and dad and finally her little sister. April was 13 years old and unable to look at me. She was really shy and that made me really curious about her. At least that's what I thought it was. I tried everything I possibly could to get her to look me in the eye. Each time she did she blushed right to the tips of her ears and looked away as quickly as possible. I remember thinking how cute she was. My wolf was really interested in her too. Like he couldn't leave her alone. He was always calm in Aprils presence. She was the complete opposite of her sister in the looks department. Flame red hair and green eyes the colour of emeralds. Her eyes lifted slightly in the outside corners giving her a slight feline look which is completely unique for a wolf. Her mouth was a beautiful bow shape, and I bet now she had soft plump kissable lips. My wolf started growling in my head impatiently. Thinking about her when I was so close to getting what I wanted was not good for me or Archer - my wolf.
I don't know how I didn't realise that April was my mate, rather than Megan. I guess because she was so much younger than me I wasn't ready to think of her like that. I think her mother knew though, which is why Lesley insisted on being with us the night of Megan's 18th Birthday.
When Megan started to shift Archer was no where to be seen. I couldn't comfort her through her shift. It wasn't because I didn't want to, I really did, I cared a lot for Megan. But Archer would not get that close to a she wolf that wasn't his mate. For Archer this was right up there with cheating on your mate! Now whilst Archer didn't whole heartedly agree with what I did when it came to my 'human mating' habits he always let it slide because it was the human part of us. He knew that the human feelings of love and lust were not the same. However for wolf they are one and the same and he would not lust after a female wolf that wasn't his mate.
I had to stand by and watch Megan shift whilst all the time screaming out for me to hold her. But there was nothing I could do. Her mom gave her as much comfort as she could during the most painful transition of her life time. When it was all over her brown wolf just kept whimpering for Archer. When he didn't come forward she howled broken heartedly into the Forrest. Lesley shifted and together they led down and huddled into each other. I felt like the biggest Jack Ass in the whole of the world.
It wasn't long before both April and Lesley shifted back. Megan's eyes were red and swollen and she looked absolutely devastated. Finally I could comfort her, but she wanted nothing to do with me. The silence was deafening as we made the walk back to the car. But as soon as the car engine caught and we started to move she completely lost her s**t! She screamed and lashed out physically. She spewed so much hatred in my direction it became more and more difficult to concentrate on anything other than her malicious words. And when the car left the road I actually spent a second wondering if I didn't deserve this. But then Archer cried out for April, with such longing that I couldn't work out whether I was more scared of dying or of never seeing her again. As the car slammed back down onto the road, one thing was crystal clear. April was my fated mate.
I heard after the accident that she had named me the 'murderer' of her mother and sister. So I'm a little at a loss as to how she will react tonight, when she discovers that the Moon Goddess has promised her to me. I've seen the mating bond over come some real obstacles. Issues of class, issues of culture, even a victim who had been tormented by her bully for several years gave him a chance to make things right, and he did!. But I really had my work cut out.
'Alpha it's time' Liam said through mind link. My heart beat accelerated , the wait was finally over. "It's show time Archer"
