"Happy Birthday Girl" Lauren yells throwing her arms around me as soon as I walk through the staff door into the kitchen. "What's it feel like to be 18?"
Whilst the scene with my Dad really got to me this morning as soon as I see Lauren I pretty much forget all about it. I've known Lauren since I started working here a few years ago. She is my absolute number one girl friend. There is nothing that we don't tell each other. She knows the s**t I get from my dad and she always knows the right things to say. I'd never be able to put a price on our friendship, I just really loved her. My sister by another Mr!!
"Never mind being 18! I'll be bloody deaf if you keep shouting like that" I grinned at her and grabbed my Apron. "Honestly Laur, I feel the same as I did yesterday"
"Where's your Wolf?"
"I assume she took one look around my brain and decided to move on..." Lauren rolled her eyes at me "She'll appear when she's ready, I'm really not worried" And I wasn't. I had confidence in my wolf, in fact I could already feel her in the back of my mind, reaching forward to break through.
"Girls you've got customers to serve" This from Jean the owner of the Diner. "Happy Birthday April, we'll all sit down after the lunch time rush and have a glass of something to celebrate".
The next few hours absolutely flew by. A couple of the regulars wished me a Happy Birthday and bought me in a drink for later on. I wasn't particularly interested in drinking, I've seen first hand what it can do. If my dad, the great warrior, can be reduced to a pile of garbage then there's really no hope for a little weakling wolf like me.
Around 4pm we closed the Diner. Once the tables had been cleared and the tips had been divided we sat down in a little room we called 'the snug' for after shift drinks.
Lauren handed me a glass of champagne and a small present wrapped in silver paper. "Open it" she said nudging me with her elbow. I tore open the paper on the only present I'd had that day. The paper gave way to a slender white box. I looked at her. I knew the gift was expensive.
"What did you do??"
"Nothing you don't deserve April"
I opened the box and pulled out a white gold choker. The centre was shaped in the infinity design and nestled in the middle was an emerald. It was stunning. I could tell that real thought had gone into picking out this piece of jewellery.
"Matches your eyes"
"Oh my Goddess Lauren this it the most beautiful thing I've ever seen-' My voice broke at the end of my words and tears filled my eyes.
"Girl, don't cry!" Lauren said her voice thick with emotion. "You'll get me going."
"I can't help it" I sniffed. "I thank the moon Goddess every day for this job and for you. You're the only family I need"
"Damn right I am" She grinned and I giggled - the emotional part of the conversation clearly over. "Right then, lets get these glasses re-filled. It's time to discuss what's happening this evening"
Disappointment replaced the smile on my face... "We can't do anything tonight, my fathers messed up again"
