Prologue Vincent De Luca’s POV October 6th, 2019, the day my fiancé died, also the day I was supposed to get married to her. It all went down that fateful morning, standing in front of the mirror, adjusting my tie, and grinning at my reflection. Being happy was something hardly associated with me, but since Veronica stepped into my life, it changed. She brought light into the darkness of my heart, alongside positivity and warmth. Being the Don of one of the biggest Mafia fraternities in Italy, my life was bound to be like that, filled with wrath, sadness, and the undying hunger for blood. I had killed, taken, caused a lot of pain to not only myself but people around me. Not that I regretted any of that, but I had vowed to tone everything down for her. “What happens if Gio finds out Boss” Russo, one of my men who was present in the room with me, spoke up. The worry in his voice was inevitable. I locked my jaw, glaring hard at my reflection. “He won’t” I turned to him. “And no one is going to tell him until the wedding is over” Gio was my brother, the first person who fell in love with Veronica. I knew of their relationship and I was aware I wasn’t meant to touch someone who my brother was already crazily in love with, but love was love. The very first day he introduced her to me as ‘his woman’, I was obsessed. Her brown eyes filled with so much innocence stared back at me and her gripping smile blew me away. Her flawless skin was complemented by her black hair. I could still remember the dress she wore that day, a red knee-length dress that she’d pull down with her hands from time to time. It was a house party, but instead of focusing on the party, I had my gaze pinned on her. She stole my attention and I haven’t been able to get it back since then. I knew from that very moment that they didn’t belong with each other. She belonged with someone else and that person was me. She thought so too when she agreed for us to have a secret affair, but of course, I kept our relationship secret from my brother. I knew he loved her. He had never been gentle with a woman, nor has he smiled at one the way he did with her, I loved her too, I couldn’t help it. I started getting closer to her and when he started noticing my familiarity with her, I had to lie about it. It got to a point where I started becoming more possessive of her and jealous of the relationship she had with my brother. I wanted it to end. She told me to my face that for any of that to happen, I had to claim her. She wanted me to marry her. If another woman had told me that to my face, I would have pointed a gun at her. I hated commitment more than anything. As a mafia boss, that wasn’t supposed to be my priority, but with Veronica, I was willing to try. At least that meant I would finally have her all to myself. That was a betrayal to my brother, but I believed Gio would heal eventually. It wouldn’t be the worst thing that happened to him. And this was the deal day. The day I had to wed the woman of my dreams, the Mafia way. Out of nowhere, the door of my room was busted open and one of my guards rushed in. His face held horror as he dropped to the floor panting. “B…Boss there is something you have to see” Casually I turned to the mirror. “If this has anything to do with my supplies or my warehouses, keep it until after my wedding,” I said under my breath. He shook his head, still trying to catch his breath. “N… no... It’s your bride boss. Veronica she’s …” he trailed off, his eyes filled with anxiety. My heart sunk that instant, turning to look at him and then at Russo who was as confused as I was. I raced out of the room without asking the guard for more information, rushing straight up to the penthouse and the room where she was being dressed. On getting there, the door was wide open, but the bulletproof door coverage we installed in each doors of the building was activated. It was a shield like high tampered glass, covering the entire entrance, but I could still see everything happening in the room. My breathing seized when I glimpsed traces of blood on the floor of the room. All her maids had been shot dead on the floor, but she was nowhere to be found. My hands collided with the glass that was preventing me from entering the room and then I pounded hard. “Veronica!” I thundered even when I couldn’t find her anywhere. Suddenly, the door of the bathroom opened and a hand was revealed first. My heart skipped when I glimpsed the engagement ring on that hand. It was Veronica. I watched her groan as she crawled out of the bathroom with a knife buried deep in her stomach, and her blood all over her wedding dress. My heart stopped beating for a second. My pulse quickened as my blood suddenly became hot. I was devastated, watching her crawl in immense pain. Who did this to her! The culprit came right out of the bathroom where she had crawled out with a gun in his hand. I gasped, It was Gio. My breathing quickened. I needed no one to tell me that he had already found out about the wedding and he was going to do something stupid. “Gio! Stop this madness. Let’s talk this out. You can’t kill her” I banged hard on the glass. “You f*****g loved her too!” “Shut the f**k UP!” he growled at me with reddened eyes and then rushed at Veronica, grabbing her hair and dragging her to the window of the penthouse. “Pl… please save me Vincent” she pleaded, her eyes meeting with mine. “Do something!” she cried out, struggling with him. Her lips were shut back up when Gio smacked her hard on the face, causing her to scream out as she trembled. “Gio!” I roared out, banging the glass with all my might, using my feet, my body, everything, but it was no use. I snatched the artillery gun that Russo already had pointed at the door. The moment the glass was deactivated, he was going to shoot Gio at my command. I started hitting the glass, profusely with all my might, but it was no use since It could even withstand a bullet. I watched the horror as life slowly slipped right out of her. She struggled weakly as more blood pumped out of her stomach, but Gio didn’t stop. He led her right to the window, holding her there, ready to push her off. He turned to me with tears welling in his eyes. “How could you do this to me, Vincent? She was my woman, mine! mine! mine! Not yours!” he turned to her. “Witch” he cursed under his breath “You deserve nothing but death Vera” he muttered right before pushing her down the window. My heart stopped beating for a split second, my pulse quickened as my knees wobbled and I fell on them. I gazed at my brother’s face, blood trickling down_ the blood of my fiancé. He locked his jaw, turning to me, seething in rage. “And you told me she was just a friend to you”
