I didn’t know what was going on with the man that called himself Niklaus. The way he was acting was mind-boggling. Why he thought I needed someone to wait on me hand and foot was something that I didn’t understand.
I nodded at the maid who was smiling brightly at me as I laced the sneakers that I was going to put on. She had wanted to do it for me, but I stopped her because I wanted to do it myself. I was not an invalid, so there was no reason why I couldn’t do something as simple as lace my shoes up myself.
She stood in the middle of the room, watching me get ready as she tried to make conversation that I was not in the mood for. Again, I was too plagued with worries about my life to think about what to say to her.
