Chapter 16

1366 Words
In the morning, a icy thin fog hangs over the ground as the first rays of sunshine peek through the thick trees, the air is thick yet the silence is so much thicker. There is not a single movement, not a single creak can be heard as a window is cautiously opened. A small head peers cautiously out of the gap, blue-gray eyes look back at the stunning figure of her mate still sleeping on the bed, as a sly smile crosses her face. The small figure clambers out the window, toes posed on the window sill, her back facing the trees as she performs a flawless backward somersault in the most over the top display, launching herself off the second story. Four dark gray paws land on the ground, the slightly small, yet sleek and agile looking wolf with blue-gray eyes seems to disappear in the eeriness of the morning, her unassuming colors blending into the dark background. A large blonde she wolf launches from the front doorstep to enjoy an early morning run. Brilliant green eyes meet blue-gray eyes as they both look at each other in shock. The blonde wolf motions her large head toward the trees, the gray wolf nods and the two start to take off. A shadowy figure moves so fast that both wolves are once again shocked. A small yelp escapes the blonde wolf's mouth as they look at the smiling figure of Jade that seemed to materialize in front of them. “You girls mind if I come for a run as well?” Both wolves shake their heads, to indicate that they don’t mind. At the second window stands a solitary figure watching the whole exchange. Green eyes suddenly fix straight on her. With a wave of the arm, Jade indicates for her to come down. Alina follows Alexis’ example and launches out of the window, in a graceful, less showy display. She doesn’t have to get asked twice. Sixteen paws go thundering through the trees at an incredible speed, one black, one dark gray and one misty gray, blending into the background, the blonde wolf seems to actually attract the sunlight, her golden fur shining like a beautiful beacon. The blonde wolf Ava is the largest, originating from alpha blood line, the misty gray wolf Jade is slightly smaller, alpha blood now runs through her veins by some miracle. The black wolf Alina is the third biggest, pure beta blood, the dark gray wolf Alexis is the smallest by far, the wolf that should have never been, blessed later in life. What she lacks in size she makes up for in joy. Growing up never believing such things were possible, she has never tired of the freedom that a shift brings and she hopes she never will. Jade looks at the other three wolves. Obviously, their speeds, sizes and abilities vary, but it can be seen in each of their eyes, determination and tenacity. She has never been around other girls like that, it is exciting and she is looking forward to training them. Back in the Alpha hall, Axel paces the hallway rubbing his eyes wearily as he knocks on doors. The four shirtless alpha males drag themselves to the dining table. Axel is the first to speak. “You do all realise that all our mates have gone out for a run and we are all still sleeping. Don’t let Jade fool you, as soon as she split us into groups it became a competition. We cannot be on the losing side” Lucas leans forward and looks at Axel. “Are you saying that we are in competition with our precious mates?” Axel looks back at Lucas with his eyebrows raised. He learned a lot about his group yesterday. He has two silent types and one friendly that people just naturally gravitate toward, it is easy to tell that even though Axel is the leader, Lucas will be the glue to hold the mismatched group together. Therefore, it surprises him that it is Lucas that will have the problem with the idea. Lucas throws his head back and laughs joyfully. “I live for competition with that woman” It is true, the mated pair even manages to make tying shoe laces a life or death race to the end. From the outside, looking in it looks like the couple is a terrible match, but by just scratching the surface, anyone can see the love between them is real, it is just buried under a facade of banter and cursing. But it can be seen that they will be the much needed comic relief, as they seem to not care who is watching when they hurl well intended insults at each other. Axel laughs. “Good” He looks at Hunter and Phoenix. “You guys in?” They both nod, they are hardly going to sit back and watch the girls better themselves while they are doing nothing. This is an opportunity of a life time, they would be crazy not to take the opportunity to better themselves. Especially for Pheonix who didn't go to alpha academy and has never had a chance to train with other alphas of quality, his father having very little ability. Outside, while running, competition is the furthest thing from their minds as they feel the understanding between them grows, it isn’t long before they are running as one, paws perfectly synched, it won’t take much before they are a well oiled machine. There is just one thing that would make this better and that is being able to link. Jade wasn’t game enough to bring it up yesterday, figuring it is going to be easier to broach the subject today after training. When everyone knows each other a little better and also when everyone is too exhausted to think straight at the end of the day, only then will Jade not be embarrassed to tell them that she has to mark everyone. She didn’t even tell Axel, not knowing how the possessive alpha will take the news that she has to bite everyone which is usually such an intimate activity. Jade shakes her head to clear her thoughts and gets back to enjoying the run. She knows today is going to be hard, she will train and she will instruct, but as for doing most of the fighting, she will just be on the sidelines watching on, she can’t risk her pups with unnecessary things, but it is going to be hard for someone that is usually in the thick of it, to merely watch on. Ava leads the group back to the house when the sun is truly making itself known, the day is upon them. She wasn’t expecting company for her run, but she enjoyed it so much more, it was nice getting to run with a new group yet not slow her pace. The girls spot the boys entering the training ring as soon as they get back, they all look at each other and increase their pace straight away. They all shift as soon as they enter the door. Breakfast is sitting on the table waiting for them, at least one of the boys cooked, but letting them get a head start? No way. “Training clothes, eat, then lets GOOOOOOOOO” Jade is not even the one to say it, it comes out of Alexis’ mouth as she is sprinting towards the stairs. Just as the others are about to follow, they spot Alexis’ tattoo. Ava’s and Alina’s eyes widen in surprise. Jade is surprised, but not as much, she has already heard that Alexis was human, but after knowing enough humans, she is surprised that such a young woman would have such a work of art on her back. Also the design. It is fitting, she wonders if it was done before or after she knew. To Jade, Alexis doesn’t seem like the type that would do such a thing once she knew the truth, so to have a wolf on her back before she knew, all that can be said, is that fate is truly an amazing thing.
