6. The Call

821 Words
“So you want Ace to dig up your mate’s past?” Anastasia rephrased Athena’s request in a blunt manner, the way she handled everything. Athena groaned mentally before saying, “Yeah. Basically, that’s what I want him to do.” That was what performing a background check on someone usually meant. Call her crazy but she believed there must be some reason for her mate to hate her kind the way he did. She didn’t want to admit it to herself, but it would hurt probably much more if his aversion had been for her solely. Ace must have heard the best friends’ discussion for he soon chimed in, “Sure thing. I’ll do my thing.” “Also,” Athena began hesitantly, “How would you feel about coming to Oklahoma for a few weeks?” “What for?” Came Anastasia’s softly spoken response. “I want you two to prevent me from doing something foolish, like throwing myself at his feet when he obviously doesn’t want me… yet.” “I think we can do that. Right, Ace?” Athena heard Anastasia address her loving mate. But with Ace having such a sire complex, he could only say in response, “We will have to ask Blake first, love. If he gives us his approval, sure, why not?” Athena realized that with Anastasia being a vampire princess, and also Blake The Troublemaker’s only daughter, it wouldn’t be so easy to get her to leave the hidden island. Nevertheless, she let out an excited, “I can’t wait already,” seeing as she knew her best friend to be a spoiled little princess. Whenever Anastasia put her mind to something, she did it, one way or another. It wasn’t long before the girls hung up. And Athena replayed the meeting in her head. It had gone well, albeit the atmosphere was tense. She had tried to keep her head in the game and out of the gutter, and she did a rather decent job in her opinion… but her dear mate had decided to let her know whether he chose their firm or not within three days. Today was the day Wild and Frivolous would give back their answer. And she just hoped they would accept the offer she had made them, that they would like the initial plan she had suggested… As she got ready for work, she applied some make-up and looked at herself in the mirror. She knew most people would find her cute, beautiful even, but she was not vain enough to think that high of herself. She did think, however, that her eyes were beautiful – probably because she had inherited her dad’s gray pools. She was about to leave her flat when she received a phone call from an unknown number. Being the curious little thing she was, she picked up right away. “Hello?” She greeted in a bubbly voice. “Athena Patera?” A woman asked formally. “Speaking,” she answered stiffly. “I am Dimitri Wild’s PA, and he would like you to be his 4 pm so that you can discuss a few details with him.” If her heart had been capable of beating, she was sure it would be trying to run a marathon at that statement of her mate’s PA. “I’ll have to call you back for that,” she answered her after a short pause. Indeed, she didn’t know what she had in store for her 4 pm. Usually, seeing as August handled her schedule, she just preferred getting a debrief on her way to Genius corp. Truth be told though, she just wanted to play hard to get, seeing as her mate had denied her the pleasure of a mere handshake only three days prior. She knew, however, that come 10 am, she’d have August call back his PA to confirm the meeting. “I’ll be waiting for your call then, Miss Patera,” the woman said simply. And without further ado, she hung up, not even waiting for Athena’s response. Wild and Frivolous and freaking rude! Athena thought to herself with a giggle. Try as she might, she couldn’t keep the smile off her face. She truly was enamored with her mate. She just hoped she’d have the pleasure to change his mind about her and her kind in general. Anticipation and excitement filled her being, and it was all she could do not to shout her joy out to the world. But being the business woman she had become through the years, and having a reputation to uphold, she got her wits back together, and worked her day through different meetings until it was 3 pm and it was time to head out of Genius corp. Dimitri Wild, here I come, she thought to herself. Ready or not, baby, you’ll have to learn to handle me.
