Chapter 5
Sean
Another day had ended again, and I went home at my usual hour of nine. So the baby would be asleep and I wouldn't have to see her. I hope the new babysitter can tame that little monster and not come to me saying that she's giving up.
"Gilbert, where is Maria?"
"She's in the kitchen, sir."
"Heat up my food. I'll just take a bath and I will come down once I'm done."
"Yes, sir."
I went to my room and removed my jacket as soon as I was inside and threw it on the chair. I loosened my tie to remove it before taking off my undershirt and trousers along with my boxers. I entered the bathroom to take a cold shower, and I was reminded of Joyce again. Our memories are very alive, and I just can't move on with my life without her. Ever since she left me, I've never been with any woman. Five years of not kissing anyone, especially having s*x.
And that is not because I didn't try to; I tried, but every time I try to be with a woman, I just can't do it. None of them can get close to my heart and body.
I finished my bath and went back to my room. I went to my walk-in closet and wore a sweatshirt and a T-shirt. Going back to the kitchen, I saw Maria preparing the table.
"Good evening, sir. May I service you?"
"Of course, Maria."
As she served me, I discovered that the house was quieter than usual. The brat hasn't bothered me since I arrived, and I always hear the noises she makes from her room.
"How's the new babysitter's first day, Maria?"
"It was great, sir."
"Do you think this person can last longer than two weeks?"
"Yes, sir. She's good with children, and Summer really liked her."
"Finally! I can now have peace of mind, and I don't have to constantly look for a babysitter for her. I know you're already busy with things around the house and managing it."
"Of course. Having someone who can help take care of Summer is a good thing, sir, but I can manage everything."
"But she needs someone to look for her all the time."
I finished talking to Maria, and we quietly ate dinner. When I was done with my supper, I asked Marie to tell the nanny to come to my office. I sat on my swivel chair and waited for her to come, and it didn't take long. I heard a knock on the door, and I let them in.
The door opened, and I saw a different woman than the one in my office earlier. She was wearing a printed knee-length shirt and only wearing a pair of flip-flops. Her hair was tied in a ponytail, and she looked beautiful. She has that kind of beauty unlike any other woman I have seen, but I am not in the position to be smitten with anyone, especially her.
"You called for me?"
"Yes. Come in and have a seat."
She did what I said and sat on the couch.
"How's this day?"
"It's okay, I guess. If you want to know if I'm staying, rest assured that I will."
"Did the girl accept you?"
"Your daughter accepted me. You should have told me that I'd be your daughter's nanny."
"She's not welcome here, and I'm only carrying this burden because, unfortunately, my mother died and she can't continue raising her. I hired you to do that, but if you don't want to..."
"I didn't say that I didn't want to; I just said that you should have told me she was your daughter. That her mother died as well as her grandmother, who takes care of her.
"I believe I have told you, you just didn't listen. I just want to know if I can execute your contract."
"Yes, sir."
"Leave your documents to Gilbert."
"I already did."
"I need to know more things about you."
"What do you want to know?"
"Do you have a family? Are you married? Do you have kids?"
She stopped for a second, looking like she was thinking before answering.
"I have none of those. I am alone."
"Then I can assume that no one will come to my house to visit you."
"Yes."
"Good."
"I need to know if I am free to do anything with Summer."
"You have the freedom you want; just take care of her and her attitude when I'm home. One more thing: tomorrow, take Maria's card for all her expenses. I also want you to buy new clothes and shoes for yourself."
"You don't need to worry about that."
"Yes, I am. You will be around the brat, and even though I don't really welcome the idea, she's my daughter, and I don't want people to say that her nanny's clothes look like rags."
She looked at me with angry eyes, opened her mouth to say something, but closed it again.
"Everything is fine."
"Don't worry about the expense of your clothes and shoes. It won't be deducted from your salary."
She nodded in agreement.
"What else, sir?"
"Ah, yes, I'm sure Maria has already warned you that the third floor is limited to her only. You and the brat are not allowed there."
"Yes, she has already warned me, and don't worry, Summer and I won't go there. Now, may I leave?"
"Yes. We're done here."
She turns and leaves. I know I was being rude to her, but I don't want her to think she can be comfortable around me and want me to stay with the brat, much less chat with her. I have to show her my place and mine.
When she left, I stayed in the office a little and left. I went to the kitchen to drink some water, and I saw Maria cleaning.
"Maria."
"Yes, Sir Salvatore?"
"I want you to give the the brat's expense card to Helena tomorrow."
"Alright, sir."
"And I want you to go to the mall with her when the girl goes to school. Help her buy new clothes and shoes or whatever she needs and make sure she does the shopping."
"Yes, sir. I will make sure."
"Very well. Good night and see you tomorrow."
I went back to my room, and my footsteps faltered when I heard sounds of laughter from the girl's room. It is something I have never heard before with other nannies. But it's a good thing if they get closer to each other. I can live in peace without worrying about the brat.
I climbed the stairs and entered my room. I did my nightly routine and took off my top and sweatpants. With only my boxers, I slid under the covers, and for the first time in five years, I fell asleep without thinking about Joyce. Instead of her image, an image of a young woman with green eyes and a sculptural body with a beautiful smile entered my mind. It has only been a day, but I am already starting to forget the memories of the past years.
