Chapter 3
Helena
I got rid of my worst nightmare two months ago, but it wasn't easy. The money I saved was not enough to pay for the three-month rent, and I used whatever was left for food and to find a job. If I can't find a job soon, what will happen to me?
But even if I needed to sleep in the street, I would never go back to that house to be abused by that pig. Even if I want to, my mother won't ever allow me again.
I was here in my small room when I heard a knock on the door. I stood up and opened it.
"Good afternoon, Helena."
"Good afternoon, Miss Maggie."
"So girl, I have a niece who works for Mr. Sean Salvatore, and she told me yesterday that he's looking for a worker. You told me you were looking for work, and I thought you could check it out."
"Of course, Ms. Maggie, thank you so much. After all this time, a job opportunity would be good, but he doesn't prefer someone with more experience."
"No, but when you're there, just tell them you saw the ad. Rose is the one in charge of looking for someone for the position, and because she's desperate, I remember you."
"Okay, I'll tell them."
Miss Maggie gave me the address, and I quickly took a bath to apply for the job. I need to get this job to live a decent life.
I looked for the best clothes I had, and once I was ready, I grabbed my bag and left the house. I walked to the bus stop and got on the bus that would take me to the address Maggie gave me. After about fifteen minutes, I dropped by at the nearest stop to the place and walked until I saw a luxurious-looking tall building. I looked at my simple clothes and thought they wouldn't let someone like me in. Feeling ashamed, I called Rose and let her know I was the girl that Maggie mentioned. She let me in, and I received judging and disapproving looks, making me feel insecure. I went to the reception area, and Rose assisted me.
"Good afternoon, Helena."
"Good afternoon."
"So, Helena, when you meet Mr. Salvatore, just tell him that you saw the advertisement, okay?"
"I understand."
"I'll let him know you're here."
She was gone for a moment before she called me and asked me to enter an office where I saw a handsome, masculine, and charming man, but when he started to talk, I discovered that he was arrogant, cold, a snob, and a very impatient man.
We talked for a bit, and he told me about the job. I thought at first that the job was at his company, but it was to babysit a little girl he did not seem to be fond of. A younger sister or niece maybe, and the mother is probably dead. I carefully listened to everything he said about the salary and that I needed to live with him 24 hours a day to take care of the child. At first, I thought about whether I should accept it. I won't have a life outside work, but in my experience, this is the best option. I will have a better room than the one I have. The salary is good. This will give me a better life, and I can achieve all my dreams.
Everyone agreed, and I left with his driver to my little shelter to gather my things. I told Maggie that I would no longer live there since I got the job from Sean Salvatore. I packed my things and said goodbye before going downstairs to look for Gilbert, the driver.
"I'm ready."
"Are you going to be the new nanny?"
"Yes, it seems difficult for anyone to take this position. What does a five-year-old child have to do to fire all the babysitters?"
"You will soon meet little Summer, and you'll see."
"Is she that frightening?"
"You know what, miss? I think the little girl just does all this to get Mr. Salvatore's attention."
"It looks like he doesn't love him; why?"
"I love my work, miss. But you will know soon enough."
For the remaining journey, he didn't tell me anything else. We drove for a long time and reached a mansion. He entered the premises and parked the car. He opened the door for me, and I picked up my backpack. He guided me to the entrance, opened the door for me, and we entered the beautiful mansion.
"Maria?"
"Gilbert, is that you?"
"Yes, I brought someone you should meet."
A few seconds later, a woman who appeared to be fifty years old approached us.
"Maria, this is Helena, little Summer's new nanny."
"Welcome, dear. I'll show you her room and the facilities of this house. When the child comes home, you will welcome her."
"Okay."
"Well, I just came here for a second. I need to pick up the little girl now. Welcome again, Helena."
"Thank you, Gilbert."
He left, and I was left with Maria. With my backpack, she took me to my room. It was inside the house, and I thought I'd be sleeping in the maid's quarters.
"This is your room, Helena. This room is just beside Summer's room, so if she wakes up at night, you'll be near here."
"The room has its own bathroom, and I will show you the other rooms."
She showed me to Summer's room. After that, she showed me the laundry room, library, garden, Summer's playroom, and the whole lower wing. And finally, the kitchen.
"The room on top of the house is Mr. Salvatore's, as well as his office and personal library. He doesn't like anyone going there without his permission; not even little Summer is allowed there.
"I understand."
"Come and let's eat some snacks."
"I need to know more about Summer, Maria. What is she in Mr. Salvatore's life?"
"His daughter."
"Daughter? Are you serious?"
"Yes, but he doesn't have that kind of love for her."
"I think so. He treats her as if she wasn't at all. I even thought she was his little sister or niece."
I didn't know that the girl I'd be taking care of was his daughter.
"Madam Marta was the one who took care of her since Joyce, her mother, died. Mr. Salvatore only visits her once in a while. Madam Marta took her here, but when she died, he needed to take responsibility for her. And so nannies come and go in the blink of an eye."
"Is it because of him or the little girl?"
"Summer is a bright little girl for her age. She can be a bit naughty, and the nannies can't take it. Some of them applied in the hope of seducing her father, and when they saw that he couldn't be reached, they left. It's been like that for six months."
"I really need this job, Maria. I have to put up with the little girl until I get the upper hand."
"You are different from the other women who worked here. Who knows, maybe the little girl will like you and won't bother you."
"I hope so. I really like kids. If I can't find a cleaning job, I work as a babysitter for busy parents who can't take care of them. Whether they have somewhere to go or a short trip."
"It seems like you have a way with kids. Summer is only doing this to get her father's attention, but he doesn't care."
"Why?"
"She blamed the little girl for the death of her mother. Joyce is a passionate young woman, and she didn't want to have a child yet, but she got pregnant and accepted it. They were happy at first, but there were some complications when she gave birth, and there's a small chance she'll survive. Her grandmother was the one who took care of her, and now her mind and heart are broken. She lost the only love and care she had. Gilbert and I tried so hard to show her our love, but it's different. It's not the little girl's fault, but Mr. Salvatore can't see that."
"Maybe Summer needs someone who can give her the love she needs. She has no mother, her father doesn't care about her, and the only person who loved and took care of her is gone. She's doing this to get some attention from her father."
"But he sees her as a spoiled child and that being raised by a nanny is the most natural thing in the world."
"What about her maternal grandparents?"
"Joyce had no parents. She was abandoned in an orphanage."
"Wow, that is sad. I mean, sometimes it's better to live in an orphanage than in a house where you will probably suffer."
"Did you come from an orphanage, Helena?"
"No, but it's hell from where I live. Thank God I left that place and I will never go back."
I closed the topic because I didn't want to share my past with anyone. I will try to get to know more things about Summer. I want to understand the little girl, to get her heart and give her the love that she never experienced. I had a mother, but I never felt her love. I grew up in a rotten environment where I spent most of my time being beaten, and when I became a teenager, it only got worse. They stopped beating me and started to abuse me in a filthy way, but now I can live in peace and help Summer have the life she deserves. I will give her the love she deserves, and who knows, maybe I can show Mr. Salvatore that his daughter wasn't responsible for her mother's death. She can't live without a father's love because he is the only family she has left in this world.
