Chapter 2
Sean
How I wanted to know what I did wrong in my life to face so many struggles. Fate was not content to just take the woman from my life and leave me with a child, and if it hadn't been there, Joyce would still be here by my side, but she was gone and left a little girl behind. No matter how I tried to love her, I just couldn't. My heart can't see her as part of my love; I only see her as the reason she died.
Every time I see her, I see the resemblance she has to Joyce, and I remember the day she came out of the world. My love left me, and if she hadn't been born, Joyce and I could have continued our love forever.
Five years have passed since that painful day, and since then, my mother has been responsible for the child that I couldn't love no matter how I tried. She is responsible for bringing her up, and I don't have much contact with her. Not enough for her to cling to me.
But because everything in my life seems to be a real tragedy, my mother died six months ago, and I had to be responsible for that five-year-old monster who couldn't seem to shut up. She refuses to obey whoever I pay to take care of her.
In just six months, I have lost a number of Nannies who came to my house, and I don't know what to do anymore. I hired the best agency with the best nannies, and none of them stayed longer than two weeks. My secretary finally had a brilliant idea to create a job advertisement for my company, and I will choose who I think can handle the job.
"Excuse me, Sir Salvatore."
"What's happening now, Rose? My God, I haven't got even a minute of peace now."
"I apologize, sir; a young woman saw the job advertisement, and she was outside. Should I ask her to come back tomorrow?"
"No. I can't go another day without someone to take care of that brat. I was about to ask for Maria, and I couldn't do it without her. You can send her in."
"For your information, she is not from an agency, and she doesn't meet the standard you normally hire."
"F*ck those standards. None of them stayed anyway. Did she know the position she's applying for is a babysitter?"
"No. I didn't describe the job."
"Very well. Let the woman in. Maybe she is someone extraordinary who can tame that little pest and stay to take care of her."
"I'll let her in. Her name is Helena."
"Make it fast and let her in before she gives up."
"Yes, sir."
Rose left the office, and I crossed my fingers that this woman was ready to take care of the brat and take away the worry that kept me up at night. It didn't take long, and a dark-skinned young woman with green eyes and a curvy body entered. Despite the simple clothes she was wearing, she still looked beautiful.
"Excuse me, good afternoon."
"Good afternoon. Close the door and take a seat."
She shyly did as I asked and sat in front of me.
"I take it you're ready to apply for a job."
"Yes, sir. Even if you didn't mention what I need to do, I can figure it out. The description did not require experience."
"Yes, it didn't. Because none of the experienced people I hired stayed longer than two weeks in the position."
She looks at me, already terrified, but I can't be flexible, so she thinks that the job would be easy.
"I am ready to stay if you give me a chance."
"Of course, but let me explain what you need to do. The vacant job isn't for my company, but for my house, to make it clear, to take care of a five-year-old child."
"Is the position a babysitter?"
"Yes. I need someone who's prepared to take care of a kid and won't run to the hills."
"Yes, sir."
"Can you perform this role? And can you take care of this child twenty-four hours a day?"
"Twenty-four hours?"
"Yes, I have no time to take care of her, and no one can look after her aside from me. I assume you have the ability to use it as it is one of the requirements."
"And yes, I saw this requirement, but I don't know if I read it correctly, but yes, I am available."
"Very well. You'll have your own room. You will have the best salary and all the benefits of a simple worker, and you'll have more every time you work overtime for her."
"Do I have a day off?"
"Yes, two days off in a month."
"That's... great."
"I need you to start now, can you?"
"Now?"
"Yes, is there any problem? You need the job, so why wait?"
"Yes, I need a job, but I still need to fix my things. I need to move out of the apartment I'm sleeping in."
"That's it? I will have the driver ready to accompany you wherever you need to be and solve your problem, but I need you to be in the house now to take care of that little pest.
"Yes, sir. Also, you didn't tell me what I need to do or how old the child is."
"And I forgot about it. You will take care of a five-year-old girl. You will take her to school, pick her up, and monitor her school activities. Tuck her in, make sure she eats, bathe her, and do everything she needs."
"Do you want me to play the role of mother?"
"Exactly. I don't want to worry about anything, and I hope you can tame that little monster that only knows how to misbehave."
"But I can't replace her mother. How do I explain myself to her?"
"You won't need to explain yourself to her or why she's gone. I want you to take care of the girl and play the role of her mother. My mother who raised her died six months ago, and until now, not one babysitter has stayed for more than three weeks. I don't have time to take care of the child. So you either accept the position or you don't, because if you don't accept it, I have to find someone else."
I'm talking, but I imagine that if she doesn't accept, I can't lose this girl; she's different from everyone I've ever met, and I can't lose her because of my stupidity. She's looking at me with the intention of giving up everything.
"Yes, I will accept it. I need a job, and I will do anything to stay. I promise you that."
"Okay, prepare to sign the contract. I will take you there tonight."
"Yes, sir."
I asked her to wait for a little time to get things in order, so I could take her to her house to gather her things, and so she could take care of the brat. I can't wait to bring back the life that brat took from me.
