“Who is this please, is my daughter okay?” Mr. Samuel asked quickly. He looked frightened.
“You don’t need to know who I am. Your daughter is fine but wouldn’t be if you don’t meet our demand.” The abductor threatened.
“Please don’t hurt my daughter!” Mrs. Samuel cried; she was shivering already.
“How are we going to trust you. Can we speak with her please?” Mr. Samuel demanded.
“Remove the tape from her mouth.” The abductor said, it seemed like he was talking to his partner.
After few seconds, a little girl’s voice cried. “Mummy, daddy please give them what they want. Please get me out of here.”
That must be Mary, I thought. I felt sorry for the girl and I wanted to say something. But I couldn’t, because that could put her life at risk.
“Baby are you okay? Did they hurt you?” Mrs. Samuel asked. Her voice was shaky.
“My legs and hands are tied. But they didn’t touch me. They said they’ll hurt me if you don’t give them what they want.” Mary said in between sobs.
“Don’t worry baby, we’ll save you.” Mr. Samuel assured her.
Suddenly, the abductor shouted “Tape her mouth.”
“Which bank account are we to send the money to? Please send the details.” Mr. Samuel said, quickly.
“No, we don’t do bank transactions. Get the money ready before 2pm tomorrow. We’ll tell you where we are going to meet up tomorrow. Do not involve the police, I repeat, do not involve the police if you want to see your daughter alive.” The abductor threatened and hung up, immediately.
Mrs. Samuel panicked and yelled at me. “Please we don’t need your help anymore, we can handle this alone.”
“Mrs. Samuel, I need you to calm down and stop panicking. We the police are already involved in this and we can’t back out now. I intentionally didn’t say anything while you were conversing with the kidnapper. I promise you; I will not do anything that will put your daughter in danger. I can understand how you feel, but please I need your full cooperation.”
“So, what are we going to do now?” Mr. Samuel asked.
“Who else was inside the house when they came?” I asked.
“Just us, and the gateman was outside.” Mr. Samuel said.
“Can I speak with the gate man?” I requested.
“Sure, let me call him inside.” Mr. Samuel offered.
I needed to speak with him privately, so I said “Don’t worry, I will go and meet him outside.”
When I got outside, I saw him seating on the plastic chair, in front of the small gateman house that was close to the gate.
“Well done ma.” He said, as I approached him.
“I want to ask you some questions if you don’t mind.” I said.
“Sure.” He said.
“How did the kidnappers enter the house?” I asked.
“They were banging the gate, so I opened it for them.” He said.
“Do you know them?” I asked.
“No, I don’t know them.” He replied.
“Then why did you open the gate for strangers at that time?” I asked and raised my brows.
“I was sleeping when they started banging the gate. So, I opened the gate without even thinking.” He explained.
At that point, the gateman looked suspicious.
“After they entered the house why didn’t you raise an alarm?” I asked.
He was about to say something when my phone beeped. I looked at my phone’s screen and I saw Owen’s text. The text said “pretty lady, I’m outside.”
I totally forgot we were supposed to meet, so I forgot to cancel my appointment with him.
“Excuse me please.” I said to the gateman and distanced myself a little, to speak with Owen privately.
I dialed his number and after he picked up, i quickly apologized. “Hello, I am so sorry Owen, I am not in the station right now.”
“Where are you? I could come and meet you there.” He said.
“I am very far from the station. I am very sorry; I should have called you earlier to cancel our appointment.” I apologized again.
“It’s fine. I will see you tonight yeah?” He said.
“I’m sorry, no. I have work to do.” I said.
“What of lunch date tomorrow?” He asked.
“I will be very busy tomorrow.” I said.
“Hope everything is okay” he asked concerned.
“Yes, everything is okay. It’s work related and you know I can’t discourse anything with you.” I explained.
“Alright, I understand. Please be safe. So, when next will I see you?” He asked.
“I’ll let you know. Owen I am really busy. I’ll call you later, bye.” I said, quickly and hung up immediately.
I trudged back where the gateman was and said “Sorry, I had an emergency.”
“No problem ma.” He said.
“So, why didn’t you raise an alarm after they entered the house?” I continued.
“My hands and legs were tied and they taped my mouth, so I couldn’t shout.” He explained.
“An eyewitness saw you conversing with the kidnappers before entering the house.” I tried to trick him.
Confusion was written all over his face when I said that. “I swear I don’t know what you are talking about. Whoever told you that lied or the person is trying to set me up.” He said, quickly.
“Are you sure you are not with them?” I asked.
“Please believe me, I know nothing. This came to me as a shock.” He said.
“Okay, that will be all for now.” I said.
I turned back and trudged to the main building, to continue my discussion with Mr. and Mrs. Samuel.
When I entered the living room, the both of them were having a heated conversation, so they didn’t notice my presence.
“Let us secretly go there without involving the police. You heard what that man said, he said he is going to hurt our baby if we involve the police.” Mrs. Samuel said.
“Let us trust the police, it’s their job so I am sure they are not going to do anything that will put her life in danger.” Mr. Samuel tried to convince her.
Mrs. Samuel was about to say something when I interrupted her. “Mr. Samuel is right. You should trust us. We are not going to do anything that will put your baby’s life in danger. I can understand how you feel. But please put your trust in us.”
Even after saying all that, I could still see the doubt in her eyes.
“So, how is it going to be tomorrow?” Mr. Samuel asked.
“I’ll communicate the plan with you tomorrow. And please don’t make any rash decision, you could put yourself in danger. See you tomorrow.” I said, then turned back and left the house, hoping they would listen to my advise.
