I was caught up in traffic, so it took me two hours to get back to the station. On reaching the station, I went straight down to chief’s office.
“Good evening chief.” I greeted, when I entered his office. He was sitting by his desk.
“Good evening, Hazel, how was it? Were you able to come up with something?” He asked.
“She was kidnapped for ransom chief.” I informed him.
“So, what do you plan on doing.” He asked.
“Initially, I thought of tracking the phone call location. But…” I didn’t finish talking when chief cut me off.
“That will put her at risk Hazel, we can’t do that.”
“Yes, I was about to say that.” I said.
“So, what is the other option?” He asked.
“I think we should follow the parents to where they will ask them to meet up, but in secret of course, because I’m sure the kidnappers will be at alert. We’ll watch them from a distance and make sure that the parents and the girl are safe after the exchange. That’s when we are going to chase the kidnappers.” I explained.
He nodded his head and said “That’s a good idea. The girl’s safety first.”
“Yes chief. So I’ll need backup.” I said.
“Definitely. But where are they going to meet?” Chief asked.
“The location has not been disclosed. They said they’ll communicate it to them tomorrow.” I informed him.
“Alright then.” He said.
“Uhm. Chief please do you have the parent’s phone number? I forgot to collect it from them.” I asked.
“Oh, sorry I forgot to send it to you. I should have sent it to you earlier.” He said.
He picked up a file and handed it to me. The file contained the victim’s information. I copied the number on my cell phone and saved it.
“Bye chief.” I said and left the office, afterwards.
I walked down to Tunde’s desk to give him his car key.
“Thanks for lending me your car.” I said and gave him the car key.
“You are welcome. How far have you gone with the investigation?” He asked.
“Pretty far.” I said and left his desk.
As I walked towards the exit, I heard Lizzy call my name. I turned back to see her approaching me.
“I saw your hot man outside today, but you were not around. Did he come to see someone else?” She said, as she walked closer.
“No Lizzy, we were supposed to have a lunch date today, but I had work to do and I forgot to cancel the date.” I said.
“Poor boy. So, are you guys a thing?” She asked.
“No, we are just friends.” I said.
“Oh, I see, friends that go on lunch dates.” She teased and rolled her eyes.
I was so tired and I needed to rest so I said. “Believe whatever you want to believe. I am going home now. See you tomorrow.”
I walked out quickly, without waiting to hear her response.
There was no traffic, so it didn’t take me long to get home.
As I entered my apartment, my stomach growled. I didn’t even realize that I had not eaten the whole day until my stomach growled.
I went to the kitchen to look for something to cook, but the only thing that was left in the house was noodles. I made some for myself and ate it , before retiring to my bed.
The following morning, I left my apartment earlier than usual, because I had to go and plan ahead of time.
I grabbed donuts and coffee on my way to work.
“Good morning, Hazel.” Tunde greeted when I entered the station.
“Good morning, Tunde, hope you had a good night rest.” I said.
“Yes, I did, thank you. Did you sleep well?” He asked.
“Yes, thank you.” I said.
“Chief told me about today’s operation. Do you need any help with the strategic planning process? I could help.” He offered.
I didn’t want to stress him and it was not something difficult, so I rejected his offer “No thank you. If I need your help, I’ll let you know.”
“Okay.” He said and I excused myself.
I went to my corner and started writing the plan down on a piece of paper.
“Hazel, see me right now.” I heard chief’s voice say, while I was still working on the plan.
I looked up and saw him standing in front of his office.
I quickly stood up and rushed to his office.
“Do you even have a working phone? I have been calling you but you haven’t been picking up.” Chief bawled.
I pulled out my phone from my pocket and looked at the screen and voila, I saw nine missed calls. Three from Owen, two from my mom and four from chief.
“Sorry chief, I forgot my phone was in silent mode and I have been too busy to even look at it.” I apologized.
“Okay, what time is the operation?” He asked. “2pm sir.” I said.
“Has the location been disclosed yet?” He asked.
“I have to communicate with the Samuels first.” I said.
“Please do that fast. Back up is ready. You can go.” He said and dismissed me.
“Okay chief.” I said and left the office.
I had to text my mom so that she wouldn’t get worried, so I sent a text that said “I’m really busy with work mom, I’ll call you when I can. Love you.”
I also sent Owen a text that said “I am very busy; I will call you when I am chanced.”
Then I proceeded to call the Samuels.
“Hello, who is this?” Mr. Samuel said over the phone.
“It’s Hazel, the detective in charge of Mary’s case. Have they called you?” I inquired.
“No, they haven’t.” Mrs. Samuel was the one that responded. That gave me clue that the phone was on loud speaker and they were both listening.
“Listen, I know every instinct is telling you to go there on your own but you need to trust us and come to the station now. And I guarantee you that your daughter will be protected.” I said.
“Okay, we are going to trust you, but please do not fail us.” Mr. Samuel said.
“I promise.” I assured them.
“We’ll be on our way.” He said and hung up.
They got to the station around 1:30pm that is one hour after the phone conversation.
“Good afternoon, sir, good afternoon ma.” I greeted them when they arrived.
“Good after detective Hazel.” They both said and I led them to the chief’s office, afterwards.
“Good afternoon.” Chief said to them.
“Good afternoon.” They both responded.
“So, it’s almost 2pm and we are expecting them to call anytime from now.” Chief said, but before they could respond, Mr. Samuel’s phone started ringing.
He looked at his phone’s screen, then looked back up and said “No caller ID. I think it’s them.”
“Pick it and put in on loud speaker.” Chief said instructed. We were all tensed.
