“Is the money ready?” the abductor asked over the phone.
“Yes, it is. Where can we meet you?” Mr. Samuel said, with a tensed tone.
“Your house junction, drop the money there and we’ll pick it up.” The abductor revealed.
“Then how will I get my daughter?” Mr. Samuel asked.
“I don’t have to tell you how. You’ll get your daughter after the money has been confirmed.” The abductor said.
“Please can you give us the grace of one hour?” Mr. Samuel said.
“One hour for what? The abductor asked.
“We are not in our house right now, we were too shocked and couldn’t stay at home alone, so we came to a relative’s house which is one hour away from ours.” Mr. Samuel said and we all nodded our heads, acknowledging his smart move.
“If it exceeds one hour then your daughter’s life would be in danger. And let me remind you, do not involve the police.” The abductor warned and hung up.
“Move!” Chief yelled and we all ran outside.
The backup team were outside and all setup for the operation.
“Location is the victim’s house.” The chief informed them.
“Wait.” I said just as the Samuels were about to enter their car.
“What happened?” Mr. Samuel asked, as he turned around to look at me.
“Where is the money?” I asked.
“It is inside the car boot.” He said.
I walked to the back of the car and opened the boot. There was a duffel bag inside the boot, so I opened it to confirm if the money was inside.
I pulled out a tiny electronic bug from my pocket and placed it under the bag where it was not noticeable.
“What was that?” chief asked. “Plan B.” I said, with a smirk on my face.
I joined chief in his personal car and the rest entered a different car. We didn’t go with the police van because we needed to hide our identity until we made sure that Mary was safe.
When we almost got to the street, we made sure that Mr. and Mrs. Samuel were a little bit ahead of us, so that the kidnappers wouldn’t suspect anything.
We parked at a short distance from the Samuels and watched them as they dropped from their car.
Mr. Samuel pulled the duffel bag filled with money out of the boot and just then, he received a call.
We tapped his cell phone earlier, so we could hear the conversation.
“Drop the money and leave that place, we’ll pick it up.” The abductor ordered.
“They are around, get ready.” Chief said over the police radio and we continued listening to their conversation.
“What of my daughter? How are we going to get her?” Mr. Samuel asked.
“you’ll see her after the money has been confirmed.” The abductor said.
“Okay.” Mr. Samuel said and they both moved away from where the money was kept.
“A suspect is in sight.” I said as I saw a man walking towards the bag of money.
“Get him, now!” chief ordered.
“Stop! We need to make sure that the girl is safe first.” I said, quickly.
“Wait! But get ready.” Chief ordered the backup team.
The man picked up the bag and ran inside a car that was parked few feet away. The car didn’t move after he entered it, probably because, they are checking to see whether the money was complete.
A few minutes after, the car zoomed off and they pushed the little girl out of the moving car. The scene was heart breaking.
“Follow them!” Chief ordered.
We quickly turned on the ignition and followed them. The chase was intense, but short. Unfortunately, we lost them at some point.
“Damn it! This was not supposed to happen.” Chief said angrily.
“Well, that’s where plan B comes in.” I said and my mouth curved into a smile.
“Oh, the bug yeah? I had totally forgotten about it. I have always known that you were a genius.” Chief said with a big smile on his face.
“I am sure you are not going to repeat what you just said tomorrow.” I joked and pulled out my tablet computer from my hand bag.
I activated the bugging device and voila, we were able to track their location and listen to their voices.
We followed the direction on the GPS and it led us to an abandoned warehouse. We parked just in front of the warehouse and just when I was about to step down from the car, we started hearing some voices; although the voices were not clear.
“How did it go?” We heard a male voice say.
“Can you believe those bastards invited the police?” Another voice said.
“Then how were you able to escape them?”
“We outsmarted them and followed our secret route.”
“You outsmarted yourselves bastards.” I murmured and continued listening to their conversation.
“Hope you didn’t hurt my niece.” A voice said.
“His niece?” We said in unison, then looked at each other, as our mouths fell open.
“There is a mastermind behind the kidnapping. They were sent!” Chief said.
“Get ready, we are going in soon. When I say “now” you move.” Chief said over the police radio.
“Are we going inside now?” I asked.
“Yes, but hope you are recording the conversation?”
“Yes Chief, trust me.” I said and smiled.
“Now!” Chief yelled.
We all dropped from our cars, then ran to the door and banged it open.
“Police! Your hands on your head.” Chief said.
There were about ten men in the room and a few of them tried to run but we were able to catch them successfully.
On our way to the station, I thought of Mary and I called Mr. Samuel.
“Hello, how is Mary doing?” I asked.
“We are in the hospital; she is receiving medical attention at the moment.” He said.
“Hope she is not hurt.” I asked, concerned.
“She is fine, just a few bruises from the fall. Those cruel bastards, how was the chase?” He asked. I could feel the pain in his voice.
“Successful.” I said and he heaved a sigh of relief.
“How is everyone, hope no one was hurt.” He asked.
“We are all fine. Please can you come to the station as soon as possible? We need you to identify someone.” I said.
“Who?” He asked.
“I don’t know him too, but you should know when you come to the station.” I said. I didn’t want to tell him that the man might be Mary’s uncle.
“Okay. Thank you very much for saving my daughter detective.” He said.
“You saved your daughter, we only helped you to catch the culprit.” I corrected him.
“Anyway, thank you.” He said again.
“We’ll be expecting you, bye.” I said and hung up.
In the middle of all the chaos, Owen crossed my mind and I couldn’t place why.
