I started to lock up the bar after a busy evening. The customers just kept coming tonight because it was Saturday and they were ready to let their hair down after a long week. It’s now 2am and I have just finished counting the money in the till and recorded the profit in our finance book. After putting it into a bag, I walked down to the cellar and put it inside the safe.
Only me and Alexandra know the combination to the safe, Michele didn’t want anyone else to know in case something happened to the money. This way he only had two suspects that could have either stolen it or told someone else the combination. I was told to reset it after taking over from Mario so that even he didn’t know the code.
When I got to the bottom step, I heard the clanking of a glass and froze on the spot. I was the only one in here and I had locked the front door before counting the till. I slowly made my way up the steps, fearing who I would find in the main room of the bar. I was no where near my gun or the button and my phone was on charge by the till. I have already had one uninvited visit from someone today I can’t cope with another. I turned the corner and let out a sigh of frustration.
“Alexandra! You scared the s**t out of me!” I yelled.
Alexandra was sitting at the bar with a glass of vodka in front of her. She had just taken a gulp when I entered and wiped her mouth with her hand.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you” she said.
“What are you doing here?”
“I thought that you might want a hand with locking up” she offered innocently.
“I’ve pretty much done it, thanks” I replied spitefully.
I walked over to the tables and tucked each chair under neatly. I also gathered any empty glasses that were left and placed them on the bar ready to be put into the washer. Alexandra got up from her chair and strolled behind the bar to put the glasses in to wash. I rolled my eyes and continued to clear up.
“Look, I know you don’t like me but I really do want to start over”.
“To be honest with you Alexandra, I’m not really in the mood for this today” I cautioned and she stared at me as I placed a handful of glasses in the bar.
“I heard about that, are you okay?”
“Don’t pretend to care, I’ve had enough of people lying to me” I snapped.
“Who’s been lying to you?” She interrogated and I huffed dramatically.
“It’s none of your business!”. Alexandra bit the inside of her lip in anger and slammed the door of the washer shut.
“You know what, I came here to try and sort this out not be treated like a piece of s**t!” She yelled and turned the washer on.
“f**k it, do it yourself!” She yelled and headed towards the door.
I groaned quietly to myself, realising how much of a b***h I was being towards her. I shouldn’t take my anger out on her when she hasn’t actually done anything wrong.
“Alexandra wait!” I called out and she stopped with her hand on the handle of the front door. She slowly turned around to me with a look of irritation.
“Look, I’m sorry. It’s been a pretty s**t day for me so far and I shouldn’t lash out at you. You haven’t done anything and it’s not fair to punish you for something that hasn’t got anything to do with you” I apologised. A smirk raised from the corner of her mouth and she let go of the handle. She calmly walked towards me and pushed in the chairs of the table beside me.
“Now was that so hard?” She asked sarcastically and I sniggered.
“Shut up” I joked.
Alexandra gave me a ride back to the house and saw there were more guys at the front gate than usual. I glanced over at Alexandra and rolled my eyes.
“Looks like Michele has upped the security then” I commented, implying it was because he had Ezio.
Sal waved us through and we drove towards the house. Michele was waiting outside the front with his arms folded. I couldn’t work out whether he was angry or worried by his expression but I wasn’t looking forward to finding out. We got out of the car and made our way over; Michele didn’t take his eyes off of me for a second.
“I’ll see you in the morning Alexandra” he said, still staring at me intensely. Alexandra walked past him and shut the front door behind her.
“Is everything okay?” I asked as I stepped closer to Michele.
He stood silently and clenched his jaw together. I noticed a red patch on his white shirt, poking up where his arms were crossed. He was clearly hiding it with his arms so I narrowed my eyes and took his hand gently, unfolding it to reveal a large blood stain with splatters coming off of it. I gasped and looked up at him.
“Michele...”
“It’s Ezio’s” he bluntly interrupted me. For some reason, I had a horrible sick feeling in the pit of my stomach and I tried to hide it.
“Is he dead?” I asked, continuing to try and hide my emotions.
“Does it matter?” He replied.
“Yes it matters”. He raised his brow suspiciously at me and then turned his back.
“I’m going to bed, glad you’re okay” he said and walked away.
What the f**k was that all about? I’ve not seen Michele like that before. He looked like he was just an empty shell, talking to me like a programmed robot. I debated whether to follow him and confront him on his attitude and his lies but it is 2:30am and I’m so tired from today that I wanted to sink into my bed and forget everything that has happened.
