Hazel Maria Cooper
It took around an hour drive to the Cooper villa. Even though the villa is in London it’s situated in a calm and quiet place. The area just seemed to be remote and out of the reach of the public. On the way to the villa after leaving the busy city car entered a road having farm land on both sides. I could see variety of crops being cultivated there. I was just wondering thinking about such a scene in the heart of London when Dani told me that the entire land belonged to the Cooper family. Car drove for another half an hour and I couldn’t believe that the entire land which might be thousands of hectares belonged to the Cooper family. I also got to know that Cooper family produces themselves all the farm products they need from milk to egg and from vegetables to fruits and from cereals to pulses. Even these products produced by the family here in London only are used even at Cooper mansion in Manchester.
A huge iron gate stood in the middle of the farm which leads to an enormous castle which they called a villa. I believe it would be more than a kilometer from the main gate to the villa. Dani stopped the car in front of the villa. He got out of the car and came to the passenger side and opened the door for me. He held his hand which I took and got out of the car. A steep of steps lead to the front door. When we reached the entrance uncle Wilson and Aunt Patricia were already there in the main door for receiving us.
“Welcome my dear” Aunt Patricia hugged me with a broad smile. Uncle Wilson turned to greet me after welcoming Dani. Aunt Patricia left me and took Dani into a tight embrace.
“Welcome Hazel to the Cooper villa.” Uncle Wilson greeted me. I wondered why this castle is called a villa. I promised myself to ask Dani when we return.
After entering the villa there is a huge hall furnished with furniture which just gave a royal look. I felt like being in a palace. In the one side there is an enormous staircase leading to the top floor. On the other side I could see three doors which I think might be of kitchen and dining area. We sat on the luxurious sofa and had a little chat with Uncle Wilson and Aunt Patricia when three children came to us, two boys and a girl. They were probably of age 4 to 8. They all went directly to Dani and the smallest boy got on to Dani’s lap. The children were very familiar with Dani.
“They love their Uncle Dani. They are so close especially Jerry.” Aunt Patricia pointed at the small boy.
“Ria, meet my cute niece and nephews. This is Jacob William’s eldest son.” Dani said pointing the big boy.
“That’s Mia, Harry's daughter and this is Harold, William’s second son. Two more babies to be met probably are in their cradle. Emma, William’s daughter and Rupert, Harry’s son.” Dani gave a brief description of his nieces and nephews. I smiled at them and held my hand for a shake hand which they took one by one when they got an approving look from their grandmother.
“Kids just go and play inside. Don’t disturb your Uncle Daniel and Aunt Hazel.” Aunt Patricia said to the kids and without any word they all went through one of the three doors. Aunt Patricia seemed to be very gentle and kind person. She made me feel comfortable in the strange atmosphere.
A maid brought us a welcome drink. I had never tasted something like that before. It surely was a cocktail and I wondered what ingredients are being mixed to make it so tasty as heaven. I wanted to ask the recipe but hesitated as I am still strange with them. After around half an hour of our arrival William and Harry came down the stairs. They both greeted us and sat opposite to us.
“Dani, I heard that you have bought the hospital in which Hazel works. Is she still going to practice?” Uncle Wilson asked suddenly and I looked Dani anxiously. I felt nervous as to what he will reply.
“Uncle Wilson yes it’s true that I have bought the hospital as a wedding gift for Ria. Well she will not be working for the time being. In future it’s up to her. If she wants she could practice.” Dani answered.
“Well it’s not the tradition of Cooper family but as your mother your wife also had proven herself so it’s good if she wishes to do something.” Uncle Wilson replied and I could see clear pain in Aunt Patricia's eyes.
“What’s your plan Hazel” it’s Harry this time.
“Well it’s my dream to specialize in cardiology. But as Dani said we are leaving it to the time. If I am destined to be a cardiologist then surely I would.” I replied with a smile.
“Hazel come dear I will show you the villa around. Let they have a manly chat.” Aunt Patricia took me to show the villa leaving Dani with his uncle and cousins.
We went upstairs first. Walls on the side of the staircase were decorated with beautiful paintings probably expensive. Even though the villa is ancient it has been given a modern touch. It’s really marvelous. The huge stairs ended on the first floor leading to a long corridor. One side of the corridor had windows facing the beautiful garden in the front of the villa and the other side had doors to several rooms. There are around seven doors in the corridor. In the middle of two doors there is either a painting or some other art work beautifully framed. Reaching the end it turned to the left again leading to a long corridor. Again there is a window on the one side but this time facing the grape field. Even though the grape field is far away from the villa it gives beautiful scenery for the viewers. I could also see hills at the back side of the villa. On the other side there is again five doors leading to various rooms.
“Actually these rooms are used for several purposes. Bedrooms are on the first corridor. First three rooms are used by William and family. The middle one is our room. The last three belongs to Harry and family. These five rooms are used by the ladies during their menstruation period. Now only three rooms are used as there are only three of us. Other two rooms will be used when Mia and Emma comes of age” Aunt Patricia described.
“What? You use different rooms during the menstruation period. Why?” I questioned.
“Well that’s the family tradition. We are forbidden to be around the men even our husbands during those days. You will know everything. We all used to live here together when our in laws were alive. George and Mary moved to Manchester after the death of our mother in law. Dani was ten when they moved out. Till then George used to travel between Manchester and London weekly. He would come here on weekends. Mary really struggled hard to make a place of her. She is the only one who came to the family without the consent of elders. It was the only time when George disobeyed the elders.” By the time she finished we had reached the end of the corridor. There is staircase there but a smaller one. It again leads to upstairs.
“The floor above is again similar to this floor but we can’t go there. The rooms on the second floor are study of the males. There is also a library and a gymnasium which is again restricted for the women. Even the cleaning staffs allowed to enter the second floor are males. Let’s go down. This staircase is for the women and the maids.” She started to step down when I asked
“That’s really ridiculous. Why don’t you all protest. Why are you bearing this injustice? I can’t believe it. We are living in the 21st century and women are equal to men in all fields. You have been living such a life for years. I would choose to die than live such life.”
“You make me remember your mother in law. Mary is also just like you. You are really lucky that your in-laws are really liberal. We are taught to bring up our sons in a way to consider themselves as superior to women. Mary was helpless until she was here. But as soon as she moved to Manchester she taught Dani to respect women. Mary and George gave Dani the freedom which every child deserved along with teaching him the family tradition. They always stood by him. Unlike other children of the Cooper family Dani was given the right to choose his bride. I could see that he had made the right choice.” She smiled at me.
By the time she ended the conversation we had already reached downstairs. There are again three doors here.
“These are the three doors of the rooms you have seen from the drawing room. The three rooms have two doors one which opens in the drawing room and other is in front of you. The first one to your right it is the playroom for children. The second is the dining room and the third is the kitchen. You could go to the playroom and have a little chat with the children while I would look at the kitchen. Emily and Samantha are already there preparing to welcome you. You are welcome when you are finished with the children to the kitchen.” Aunt Patricia explained.
“I will go with you. I haven’t met Emily and Samantha yet.” I said
“No dear, first let me check. Today you are the guest. So be relaxed. Just catch with the kids. It will be helpful for you in the future because when you return back to Manchester you have no chance to experience with the kids as there is none.” She said and then she opened the door to the kitchen and left me behind to go to the children's play room.
I quietly opened the door of the playroom and went inside. The three children I saw earlier were there. The boys were playing a video game while the girl is standing sadly in a corner. When they heard my footsteps they suddenly stood up. I smiled at them and said
“Hello, I am your aunt Hazel. Your Uncle Dani’s wife. Don't be afraid of me I am your friend. Will you allow me to play with you.”
“We don’t play with girls. You can join Mia if you want.” Jacob said
“Yes you can play with this dirty creature.” It’s Harold's words which just shook me.
“Don’t call me like that. I am your elder sister.” Mia cried.
“You are just born to bear the babies of Adam. You are just meant for that. You have no right to play with us boys. Go and help mummy in the kitchen. That’s your place.” Jacob backed Harold.
Mia ran out of the room through the back door. I stood startled hearing such words from small children. They are already becoming a male chauvinist. They are considering their own sister as a mere creature born to be a means of producing generation. I am just shocked to see and hear such things in this modern century when the women had reached the moon. When a women is ruling the kingdom where we live. This is happening in the heart of London. These males are governing the country. How could this happen. I didn’t know the family traditions are so anti womanhood that they don’t even treat their daughters as a human. But they were talking about someone.
“Well who is Adam?” I asked.
“Adam Weasley is Mia's fiancé.” Jacob replied and continued to play.
