Chapter 7- The contract marriage

It is Thursday morning. We are all in a hurry to get ready for the marriage registration of Tessa and Kevin. My parents, Robin and I were from Tessa's side. Kevin will be accompanied by his family which included his parents, sister and two brothers. Tessa told me that Kevin's whole family will be coming as they want to meet me as I am a celebrity now. I even regarded not to go to the registration office but changed my mind for Tessa. After all she is my only sister.

We all got up in my dad's new car and moved towards the registration office. When we reached there, Kevin and his family were already waiting for us. As soon as we got out Kevin's sister Kelly strode towards us and hugged me instead of Tessa. 

“Oh my God, I can't believe it. I am hugging the future Mrs Daniel Cooper. Can I take a selfie with you?” She took out her phone and took a selfie. I glanced sideways to Tessa who was smiling brightly. I wondered how she could bear such a neglecting behaviour from her sister in law. Everyone was laughing except me. I pulled Tessa to one side and asked her how she could tolerate such behaviour from her in-laws. But her answer shocked me.

“Ria, why should I feel bad? It is because of you they have accepted me and I am getting married this soon. And why should I care about their behaviour? I am not going to stay with them after marriage. Mom had already told you that both I and Kevin are moving with mom and dad after your marriage. Until our wedding Kevin is going back to his family and I am moving with you all. Now be happy and don't worry about my feelings little sis. Just know that I am happy that I am getting married.”

I kept a distance from everyone. Thank God I had put a hat which almost hides my face. So no one recognised me. Because I know today I am obviously in the front pages of every newspaper, TV channels and online media.

It took about an hour to register the marriage. Tessa and Robin got their copies of marriage certificate. Everyone congratulated each other and we parted away. Back in the car I whispered to Robin who was sitting next to me about the contract and reminded him to get ready by Saturday. He smiled and nodded. 

Mom was busy for the next few days as she had to pack everything because we were moving to the new house gifted by the Cooper’s. She was just throwing away old things which were still in good condition saying it will look weird in our new luxurious house. We were not taking any furniture as the new house is fully furnished. Dad was thinking to give this house on rent. This house is the only lifetime saving of my dad.

It was Saturday and I was waiting for Robin to bring the draft. He came in the evening and I dragged him to my room as soon as I got the chance.

“Why are you so late and where is the draft?” I just blasted at him as I had been waiting for him the whole day anxiously and he didn’t even bother to call me.

“Sis relax, you should remember that I am now living almost 150 kilometres away. It takes me more than one and half hours drive to get here. And today there is obviously huge traffic which took me around two hours to reach here. You know that I have been promoted recently as the marketing manager. So, I have to prove myself that I am capable of being in such a position and for that I have to work hard and therefore I have been working today. I just rushed here to meet you after my work. Today I am going to stay here so that I can take you out tomorrow to meet Daniel. You know you can't sign the contract in front of mom and dad. Here is your draft.”

Robin took some papers from inside his suit and handed me. I read the draft carefully and smiled after reading it. Every condition was clearly printed. Now I can be happy that I am not giving away myself. I hugged Robin and said.

“Thank you Robin, you have kept your word. You should keep this to yourself.” I said and he nodded.

It was Sunday morning. I have to go out with Robin to sign the contract. We have to make some excuse at home. Daniel had told Robin to reach Greenlam’s hotel at 12:00 p.m. Robin assured me that he will talk to mom and make some excuse to take me out. By 11:15 Robin came to kitchen where I was with mom preparing for lunch.

“ Ria, come lets go out. It's my treat for you as it's because of you I have got this promotion.” Robin said and turned to mom and said.

“ Mom, we will not be here for lunch.”

“OK then let's all go out. You owe treat to all of us. I'll tell your father and Tessa to get ready.” Mom said and I looked Robin startled.

“No mom. Today is the last day my sister would be a Mathews. So I want to spend time with her alone. I will treat you later mom. Once you all move to our new home, it will be possible for me to come often as it is just half an hour from my office.” Robin took my hand and pulled towards the front door. I waved a goodbye to mom.

We reached Greenlam’s hotel by 12.00. Robin asked for Daniel in the reception and we were lead to a private room. Daniel was already there. Robin shook hands with him. He just smiled at me and told to take a seat in front of him. Robin took out the contract to sign.

Daniel signed the contract even without reading. I had to do the same as it would feel weird to read it in front of him since he trusted us. After all it’s a contract that we prepared. Daniel took the contract from my hand as soon as I signed it. I felt something fishy but couldn’t recognise it. I thought that since the contract is made by Robin there is no need to worry.

Daniel told me that he will give me a copy of the contract tomorrow at the time of our marriage registration. I nodded and we left. I wondered why he didn't hug me or at least shake hands with me. Robin took me to a classy restaurant in the town and ordered the really expensive dishes for me. I was happy for my brother. Now he could live a life which he always dreamed of. Next day mom woke me up early in the morning.

“Honey wake up it's your marriage today.” I rubbed my eyes and looked at mom furiously

“Mum registration is at 10:00 a.m. There’s a lot of time. Why are you waking me up at 5 o’clock?”

“Did you forget that we are moving to our new home just after your marriage registration? We already have moved everything there. Tessa and Robin are going straight away to arrange everything before our arrival. They will not be there for your marriage registration. Mrs Cooper has asked only me and your father to be with you at the registration office. I am waking you up so early because Tessa and Robin are waiting in the drawing room so that you can check whether all your things have been moved. They are taking your stuff right now. Just take only the essential things. You will not need those things after your wedding.” Mom took a deep breath after finishing her speech.

I came to the drawing room to check on my things. I made sure that they have taken all my medical books. They are my only valuable possession. At first mum didn't agree to take my books. After long hours of convincing by my dad she did agree. Tessa and Robin left in Robin's car which was given by his company on being promoted.

We reached the registration office by 9:45. The office compound was filled by media personals. As soon as our car entered the gate, cameras flashed at us. I didn't get out of the car until we saw Cooper family’s luxurious car entering the compound. The car was at once surrounded by the media who were pushed aside by the big muscular body guards. They got out of the car protected by the bodyguards. Daniel and his parents were the only ones who came for the registration.

As soon as we got out of our car, a pair of bodyguards came to our side and paved the way to the office. There already was a big queue for the registration. But it didn’t matter for the Cooper family. They entered the registration office without waiting and at once the officer invited them to do the registration process. No verification was done. They just entered the names and asked us to sign. It took less than five minutes to complete registration and get the certificate. I once again realized that money speaks. It took almost an hour for Tessa's marriage registration.

Mrs Cooper never looked towards me or my family. It was only his father who was humble and polite. As soon as registration was done Mrs Cooper strode back to the car without even congratulating us. Daniel gave me the registration certificate along with the copy of our contract and said.

“Read it carefully”

I wondered why he said so but completely forgot about it as we were busy with moving to our new home. It was one of the most luxurious apartments in the centre of the city. Our apartment was on the fifth floor. When we arrived, Robin, Tessa and Kevin were waiting for us. All three of them congratulated me and welcomed us home. It was really huge. It was nearly the double of our previous home. There was a drawing room, 2 bedrooms and a big kitchen on the first floor. On the second floor there were three bedrooms- one master bedroom and two normal size bedrooms. Robin and Tessa took the two smaller bedrooms and left the master bedroom for me. I told my parents to take the master bedroom and that I will take one of the bedrooms on the first floor. But they denied saying that they can't climb the stairs so often. Robin and Tessa had ordered a grand dinner for all to celebrate our new journey. I slept in the big master bedroom hoping to go to the hospital and join back tomorrow. Little did I know that it’s all going to be shattered tomorrow at the hospital?
