Chapter 18- At the family office

We are in the car going to the office in London. Daniel received a call from his cousin William that there is an unexpected emergency at their office. From Daniel I knew that this office is of a company producing medicines. It is owned by the Cooper brothers- Wilson, Henry and George. Wilson and Henry passed on their business to their sons William, Abraham, Mark and Harry when they entered politics. George passed it to his son Daniel after being diagnosed with cancer.

Other businesses of the coopers are individually owned except for this pharmaceutical manufacturing company named WHG pharmaceuticals named after the first letters of the three brothers. 

Daniel wanted to leave me at the hotel but I insisted on going with him as I will get bored at the hotel room all alone. I promised him to be comfortable at the office and that I will not bother him with my presence. He felt bad for spoiling our honeymoon. But I consoled him that work is more important than leisure.

The office is situated in one of the prime locations in London. We reached there within half an hour. Dani took me to their office on the 26th floor. Out of the elevator he took me to a huge office. The office is luxuriously designed. It didn't seem to be an office of a pharmaceutical company, but of an architectural firm or a fashion designing office.

Dani walked past all the cubicles to the end where I could see five identical cabins and each with respective names of the five cousin brothers. I could see Daniel’s name on the first cabin from the left. As Dani was about to open his cabin someone called us.

“Over here bro.” It is Mark calling from William’s cabin. So we walked over there and entered the cabin. Seeing me with Dani, William’s eye furrowed. He didn’t hide his displeasure.

“Dani you are called here on emergency. But I could see you are still holding on to your honeymoon.” He said indicating towards me. I felt uncomfortable as if I am in a wrong place. So I said.

“I am sorry. I'll be leaving. I will wait for you in your cabin Dani.” and I turned to leave but Dani caught my wrist and turned me around.

“William she is my wife. She has every right to come to my office. She is family” Dani stared at William furiously.

“Dani, my brother, did you forget that women of Cooper family never interferes in any other matter outside their home.” William reminded.

“Wrong. My mom does. She always had a word in both business and politics.” Dani corrected.

“Aunt Mary is an exception. You know that Dani. She proved herself. She is surely a genius as we say Beauty with brains.” William said

“Please don't fight over me. Excuse me. Please carry on with your business. I will sit in Dani's cabin.” And I left before Dani could stop me.

Time passed and it's already afternoon. One of the assistants came in with lunch for me. I understood that Dani has sent me food. He cares for me even when he is busy. I felt warmed by his gesture. I had my lunch in his cabin. By evening I was already bored. So I just decided to take a tour of the office. It's a really big office. Each employee wished me when I passed them. They already knew me as I was in the news. When I reached a door, which I assumed to be the conference hall, voices came from inside. I could hear voices which I recognised to be of Mark and Abraham along with other voices which I had never heard.

I moved away, from there quickly as I don't want to be seen by someone and thereby leading to another fight between the brothers. I walked back to Dani's cabin and made myself comfortable on the sofa. By 6 p.m. Dani came in. He looked tired. I know he didn't even have lunch. He sat beside me and took my hand and said.

“Sorry Ria, I know you are bored but I can't help it. I also apologize for William’s behaviour. He shouldn't have said those words in front of you.”

“Don’t be sorry. I know he was stressed and don’t blame yourself for anything.”

I got up and went to make a coffee. I returned back and made him drink the coffee. I made him sit resting his back on the sofa and then I massaged his shoulders. He seemed to be relaxed. And that's when I asked him

“Dani, if you don't mind can I know what exactly is the problem.”

“Well it’s related to the manufacture of certain medicine. We used to manufacture this medicine at large scale. We had a bulk order for this medicine. So, we bought the components needed in a big quantity and we were about to start the production when the government banned all the medicines with this particular composition. There was some study which proved that overuse of this medicine affects the functioning of heart. Uncle Henry and Uncle Wilson have tried their best to remove the ban. But they couldn’t. If we are not able to produce the medicine the company will go bankrupt and we will have to shut down the company. This company is more than its value to my whole family. My father and my uncles will be just devastated. We can't allow it to happen.” He sighed.

“Can I know the chemical composition of the medicine?” I asked

“Yeah, sure it’s in my computer.” And he went to the computer and took a printout and gave it to me. I went through it. 

“Can I use your computer?” I again asked.

“Yeah of course you can.” He gave me permission.

I searched what I wanted for about an hour and finally I got up with a smile. Dani looked at me amused.

“What’s it Ria. Why are you so happy?” 

“Dani I have a solution to your problem. You know I am a doctor and I know about medicines. I have gone through the components of the medicine you previously produced.” I paused and looked Dani for response.

“Go on. What's your suggestion?” He gestured me to continue. 

“The medicine you produced was for lung infection. You can also make medicine for de addiction of alcohol and other drugs using the same components but in different composition.”

“But how is that possible? We only have very little time and we have no orders for such medicines.” He doubted.

“It’s possible Dani. You should first understand what I am saying, so you can explain it to your cousins.” I said

“No Ria. How could I explain these medical terms to them? Moreover they will ask me details which probably I don't know. So, it's better you yourself explain it to them.” Dani concluded.

“No, Dani they will not like it. William already has warned me indirectly to not interfere in business matters.” I denied his words.

“Don’t worry Ria. You have my back and they will understand you. Just, be patient. They are being brought up to consider women in such a way. It's not their fault. It's actually our family tradition.” he said

“But I am lucky. I have you. Even though you also got the same upbringing you don't treat me so. You are kind. I know your respect women.” I kissed him on his cheek.

“Then you should thank my mom. It's because of her. I don’t consider women inferior to men. It's also on my mom’s words I bought the hospital in your name.” So I am wrong about his mom. She is really a good person. I came back from my thoughts when Dani said

“Now, come let's meet them and tell your suggestion” Dani pulled me with him out of his cabin.
