Chapter Nineteen - Location unknown

1270 Words
Scarlett  Caleb and I were getting ready because we would be heading to Scotland to gather our things. Brendan came by this morning to give us the good news that witness protection was going ahead. Everything had been sorted. We still didn’t know exactly where we were going, but we had to go home and get our things. They weren’t too keen on the idea, but we talked them into it, but we had to take four agents with us.    I wasn’t leaving my things behind, especially my brother’s things, because those things are all I have left. Memories that I will keep forever but having the small sentimental bits are always needed for the days I feel low and want to be close to my brother.    “Are we nearly ready to go, darling?” Caleb grinned as he dumped his bag at the bottom of the stairs.   “Yes, I am ready to go.” I returned the grin.   “I am ready to get back to Scotland even if it is just a flying visit.” He said.   “Me too.” I agreed.   Just as we stood there in a wee happy bubble, the front door swung open. There were two men in suits entering the house.   “Scarlett, Caleb.” One of the men said as he looked at us both.   “Yes,” I replied.   “We are ready to go if you both are.” The man gave us a slight grin.   “Yes, we are ready to go,” Caleb said as he leaned down and picked up the bags we had packed sitting at our feet.   I am going to miss Scotland once we leave. It has been my home for so long, and it will break my heart to say goodbye. Not only to Scotland, but everything. I hate that I can’t tell my work, friends, or even my parents where we are going. I need to tell my parents something, they have already lost my brother, and I don’t want them to think they have lost me. I had to fight back the tears that were threatening to fall.    “Come on, beautiful, let’s get this done,” Caleb said.    I nodded and sighed. We followed the agents out to the car. They looked around, making sure we were safe as they got us into the car. We were in for a long drive as they were planning to use many back roads and avoid busy areas just in case anyone spotted us. The majority of PJ’s gang has been caught, but I know there were definitely a few missing faces, and there is a good chance he has got more members that I don’t know about. I took a pillow and blanket with me to be nice and comfy on the long drive.   “I would quite like to know where we are going to end up,” I said to Caleb.   “Me too. I am intrigued to know if we will have a choice.” He said with raised eyebrows. “If you could choose anywhere to go, where would it be?” I asked him.   “If it is with you, Scarlett, it doesn’t matter where I am.” He kissed my hand he was holding tight.   “Cheesy,” I said, laughing.   “Cheesy but true, what about you?” He asked.   “I think I would like to go somewhere that snows a lot during the colder months.” I smiled.   “Yes, that sounds nice. It would be beautiful, and we could spend our time close to keep us warm,” He smirked.    “Trust you to think that,” I giggled.    He laughed, shrugged and kissed me. I snuggled into his side, put the blanket over us both. Caleb slipped his arm around my shoulder and kissed the top of my head.    “I love you, and no matter what happens, we are going to be fine,”    “ I love you too,” I replied, “And I know we will,”    Silence came between us. It was comfortable, though. We had at least an eight-hour drive ahead of us.     I could feel my eyes begin to get heavy, and we had only been in the car for under one hour, but I was so tired and relieved to be leaving the house we were just in. I looked up at Caleb, and he was already sleeping. He must be pretty done in as well. I wanted to stay awake for the journey as it was so nice driving through the countryside. The sun was splitting the skies.   “Scarlett.” I heard a strong male voice, I jumped, and my eyes shot open.   “What’s happening?” I shrieked out.    “It’s alright, Scarlett. You nodded off for a while. Well, you both did, but we are going to get something to eat and a drink.” The man in the front passenger seat grinned at us both.   “Ohh, right, thank you.” I returned the grin then looked up at Caleb.   He never said a word. He just smiled. He has definitely just been woken up as well. I could see the tiredness in his eyes.    “I am starving,” I said out loud just to anyone who wanted to listen.   “Me too,” Caleb replied as he shifted his body to sit more upright.    “You will need to tell us what you want because we aren’t risking taking you both inside,”    I am not surprised by that. I would rather go inside, but I guess that isn’t going to happen. Caleb and I gave them our food orders, and one headed inside.    “Do you know where we will be located?” I asked the agent.    “Sorry, ma’am, I am not allowed to tell you. That information needs to stay private until we get there,” he said.    “Oh...OK,” I sighed.    I hated not knowing where we were going. I am a planner, a control freak and not knowing this information is enough to make me anxious. I sat in silence, just waiting for the food to come out to the car. Caleb and the guy who was driving us were chatting away as if they were best buds. I suppose being stuck in a car with them for hours, he may as well make the most of it. I didn’t have anything to say, I just wanted to know what the outcome of all of this was going to be, and I can’t even be told.   “Cheer up, Scarlett, we are just about to eat,” Caleb said as he nudged me with his elbow.    “Ohh, I know,” I smiled, “I just want to know what is going to happen.”   “Try not to worry too much, babe.” He smiled as he pulled me in for a hug.   “Here is your food, guys.” The man returned to the car with a bag of food for us.   He handed it through to the back seat for us, and we tucked in straight away. We were both starving.    “So good,” Caleb groaned.    I nodded in agreement, my mouth too full to talk. Caleb laughed at me before getting back to his food.    I know I was worrying about everything, but I am sure things would be so much more difficult if I didn’t have Caleb by my side. I need to keep telling myself things are going to be alright.
