Chapter 13
"Wake up, Katie bear."
"Mom? What are you doing here?"
"I've come to help you get ready for the big homecoming dance," she says, taking my hand and pulling me away to the mirror. She stands behind me and brushes her fingers through my long, blonde hair. "Just look at you. You're the most beautiful thing I've ever laid my eyes on."
I smile, taking in her dark brown eyes and her perfect white smile through the mirror's reflection. "Thank you, mom."
"There's just one thing missing," she says, draping something around my neck. She pulls my hair to the side and clasp the necklace together. "There."
I look down, holding the silver heart locket between my thumb and index finger, turning it from side to side. "It's beautiful."
She kisses my cheek. "Just like you."
