After lunch it was just like Connie told me. The meal smelled and tasted much more intense, I never suspected a chicken salad sandwich could be so tasty. As if I've been eating dirt so far.
My nose was able to sniff guards who weren't even in my vision range. I could even tell what they had for lunch, that was seriously freaky. Was this how every werewolf felt? If it's so, they must be unstoppable.
My sensitive ears caught on someone's footsteps coming my way. I suspect this would be Mr Alpha. He hasn't come to see me for the last two days, and I was grateful for it. I don't feel comfortable around men, and this one won't probably change too quickly.
He stopped in front of my glass wall and both of us just stared at each other in silence, like we would be playing a game of who will c***k and speak first.
He took a deep breath knowing that he lost this small duel.
"Connie told me that most of the drugs are out of your system. How do you feel?"
"Fine." - I answered shortly.
He watched me like he was expecting to hear a bit more, but unfortunately for him, I am not too effusive. Even in Orphanage where I was surrounded by kids my age I wasn't as easy going like the rest of them, and to be honest I didn't mind being an outsider.
"Have you made up your mind?" - he asked.
"Almost."
"You need more time?"
"More information. How do you expect me to agree to something I don't know first thing about." - I said looking him dead serious in the eyes.
To my surprise he smiled approvingly, then his eyes got foggy for a moment and thanks to Connie I knew he was talking with someone.
" You know it's considered rude to talk with someone while standing in front of me." - I scolded him, and a frown on his forehead told me that nobody talks to him like that.
He didn't answer at my remark but just a few moments later Molly and that stiff guy Blake joined him.
" Jade, I believe you know Molly and Blake Crawford, they will show you around the pack land." - Connor announced.
"Wait! Are you letting me out of this cage?! What if I'll be dangerous to someone…"
"That's why Blake would be with you, he's an excellent warrior. They will answer all your questions."
He then turned around and left. Blake opened my cell's door and let me out of it. The feeling of being free from rooms without doorknobs was weird, but the good weird, like I was getting credit of trust. A chance to start over.
Uncertainly, I walked out into the corridor to the two waiting for me. None of them said anything but waited until I got used to the new reality. I looked at them both and for the first time since I came here I genuinely smiled.
"Both of you have the same last name, are you siblings?"
"Yes we are. Molly is your age, I'm a year older."
"Ok, so where are you taking me?"
"To show you around." - said Molly with the widest grin.
We went through the infirmary corridors and the closer we got to the main entrance the more insecure I felt. I haven't been outside for more than two years. I forgot how it felt to have sunrays on my face. f**k, I'm not even sure what season it is.
But it seems that only I was this insecure, Iri was more than excited. Her pacing started to give me a headache, but I understood that, it's been long enough since she was free.
I stepped outside and closed my eyes just enjoying the cold air on my face. It must be winter then, yet it wasn't as cold as I suspected.
"What do you want to see first Alpha, the Pack House, woods, training grounds?" - Blake interrupted my blissful moment.
"What's the Pack House?" - I asked.
"That's the house where Alpha and his ranked members live."
"Could you talk like a human and not with those codes. Who are ranked members?" - I said sarcastically. It's frustrating not knowing the first thing about this world. Things that are normal for them, to me, are just bizarre and I hate feeling like a dummy.
" Forgive me Alpha, I sometimes forget that our ways are new to you." - Blake answered looking truly ashamed, bowing his head apologetically.
"Ok, stop with the Alpha and bowing to me, that's strange. Call me Jade." - I said a bit irritated, his submissive attitude made me uncomfortable.
"I'm sorry, but this is unheard of to address my superior on the first name basis. Alpha Balfour wouldn't approve."
"I don't care what Connor would or would not approve of. You make me feel out of place." - They both gasp at my words and for the love of God I had no idea what I've said now.
"What?!" - I asked cluelessly.
"No one should call Alphas by his first name, that's disrespectful." - Molly said. I rolled my eyes at her, cause they were acting like it was some kind of cult my father was a prophet.
"Ok, enough. He hasn't earned my respect yet, and if and when he has a problem with how I call him I'm sure he will tell me this himself. Now what's the Pack house and those members who live there." - I end this discussion raising my voice a little. They exchange glances and Blake starts explaining.
" Ranked members are people who help Alpha Balfour to run this community. Among them is our father who is a Beta - Rodger Crawford - he is like Vice President, the second most important. He helps Alpha Balfour in everything and leads the pack whenever Alpha can't. Then there is a third in command, Gamma - Jeffrey Biggleman. Gamma is in charge of appointing members to appropriate jobs."
"So he's like Human Resources?"
"You could say that." - Blake admitted with a slight chuckle.
"But why are they all living together? That's just sick."
"Those are our ways. It makes them more accessible for pack members. There is always someone in the House who's in charge."
"So it's like a guardians tent in the camp?" - I was once in the camp with other kids from the Orphanage, what Blake's describing sounds similar.
"More like headquarters in the military." - he corrected me.
"Oh ok. So do you live there too?"
"Yes we do."
I started thinking about what I know so far, their ways were so strange to me.
"You told me you'll be my Beta. Do you have to?" - I asked Blake and he looked at me like I had offended him.
"Don't you want to?" - he asked, taken aback.
"No, I mean I don't know. But my point is are you convinced that this is what you want to do. If you'd like to be I don't know… an actor for example, could you?"
"That's what I was born for. Only Alpha and Beta can lead a pack of wolves, we're the strongest and that's my destiny."
Blake said it, like being a Beta was the biggest honour. They seem to be really devoted and loyal to my father. Will I be able to gain the same respect?
" Ok. So show me the training field first, that House seems a bit dull." - I said after a while of processing Blake's words. Molly smiled at my words, she was less stiff and brainwashed as far as I could tell.
They led me to the two storey building with gym, olympic sized pool and some residential part, where as I learned single warriors lived. In the back was an outdoor treadmill and a few sparring rings. It all looked pretty new and the national team would not be ashamed of it.
A group of young people close to my age were ending their training for the day and heading to the building probably for the shower.
One of the girls, tan beauty with long black hair was too busy talking with her friend to notice me standing in her way and she bumped into me hard.
She gave me the look like I had committed a crime or something, when in fact it was absolutely her fault.
"Watch where you are going, Crazy b***h!" - she hissed with venom in her voice.
And that was something Iri wasn't pleased with.
