CATHY
"Good, now that you've signed the documents and successfully registered as a student of our prestigious school, I am now going to call your course representative to show you your class and introduce you to your fellow classmates," The principal said, his English heavily laced with his korean accent.
I found myself staring at him and wondering how he was able to get to a position as the school head if he can't really speak English but I bit my lower lips to stop myself from asking the question out loud.
Silently praying within myself that I don't bring that sharp bluntness to this school, I nodded my head meekly and was about to stand up.
"Wait young lady.. I have checked your previous school profile and I'm happy with the results of your school but you see thiseu school, we do different things. We learn Englisheu and Hangul, you know? Korean, so you have to do good with it, okay?"
I frowned slightly and turned to face my mother wondering what he meant.
"Huh?" I asked.
"He meant that you should improve your korean skills," She said to him and turned to him, "You don't need to worry about that, I heard about this school's good English reputation and I only chose this school because she is quite good with her korean so she'll manage."
I felt so surprised as I was looking at my mother. It was shocking that she was about to notice that I was able to speak Korean to some extent.
She usually acted like she wasn't interested in any of my affairs but it seems like she pays attention to what I do.
"You know Hangul?" He asked, looking surprised.
I nodded my head.
"Good good. The panja..classeu head will help you in your studies."
"Alright sir," I said, smiling stiffly.
"Come let me take you to your lecture hall.Tell your mother bye, let's introduce you to your students."
I forced a smile on my face as I waved to my mom.
"Well, see you later. Do well, I don't want to hear anything from this school about anything bullying," She muttered through her teeth as we Walked out of the office.
I sighed softly and wished so too. I've gotten so tired of being Williams punching bag back in Texas, I definitely am not looking forward to being someone else's punching bag here in Seoul.
The hallway was so quiet and empty with only the sound of the teacher teaching interrupting the golden silence.
I felt so relaxed in this serene environment and at some point started hoping that things would be different here.
Back in Texas, the hallway was usually filled with delinquent students who skip classes to make out with each other or to bully someone and it was annoying that the school authority didn't take a note of anything about it.
The most enticing thing about this school to me was the fact that I was allowed to major in Accounting and minor in Literature since I loved the both of them.
I passed through different lecture room, taking a peek through the tiny opening to see students sitting and listening quietly.
Finally! A place where I can fit in so easily!
It was almost as if this college was the college of my dreams and my heart felt like exploding with happiness.
"Hey..." The man called someone and my attention turned to who it was that he called.
One tall guy with sharp nose and extremely pointed nose looking like he just walked straight out of a kpop music video was walking towards us and I gulped.
If this is how hot all the guys here looked then I definitely have to be careful about falling in love with all of them.
I never expected them to look this hot in real life, like wasn't it the common belief that koreans don't look exactly how they do on the screen?
"Uhh..Yohan ah," The principal said, nodding his head as the drop dead gorgeous guy bowed and greeted him in the usual korean style.
I felt like screaming with excitement as his cobalt blue eyes locked with mine and he gave me a soft smile.
"Here, Kathy," the principal called, wrongly pronouncing my name with a K.
"Sir?" I managed to whisper.
"This is the president of the accounting department. You have any problems, question or anything, you turn to him, okay? He's a good boy and very good student so he help you, okay?"
The guy smiled and turned to face me.
"Kathy?"
I quickly waved my hands to correct him.
"No no..Cathy as in Cady."
"Ohh," he nodded his head and shared a conspiracy smile with me, "Well, I'm happy to meet you. I'm sure the accounting department could do with another girl."
The principal looked at the two of us and grunted softly.
"This is school, okay? Other matterseu should be outside school."
It was strange that I was starting to understand him, despite his heavily thicken korean accent as he pronounced some words.
"Alright sir," I answered shyly.
Another thing strange about the school was the fact that I've been able to shut my mouth and not say anything blunt since I walked into the school though a part of me was itching to.
The warning of my mother echoed in my head And I stopped myself again.
"So..Come, let me show you where we usually have our lectures. Some of our coursemates are already sitting and I'm sure they'll like you, Cathy."
I wasn't looking forward to making friends or anything, but the idea of meeting new people who would be as nice as Yohan was slightly thrilling and terrifying at the same time.
"Yohan ah!" One guy yelled as we pushed the door open and I froze.
The entire class looked up with a smile on their face and then curious looks as they watched Yohan walk in with me.
Majority of the class were guys!! How is this possible? How come I wasn't told about it before??
Is this what Yohan meant when he said that the accounting department could do with another girl? How will cope? I've always been an enemy to guys especially since I'm pretty blunt as hell.
The guy shook Yohan's hands and stared at me pointedly, not even bothering to hide the fact that he was also checking me out.
He whistled loudly.
"What's the matter? Never seen a girl before?" I asked him sharply before I could stop myself.
He stopped and the murmuring in the class stopped as they all stared at me surprised.
I think Yohan sucked in his breath heavily and avoided staring at me.
Gosh, why .why can't I control my mouth??!
"Ah ah... You're a sharp talker? Good, very good."
He stared at me for sometime with a smirk on his face and turned to face Yohan, said something in korean and stared back at me with amusement in his eyes.
I wasn't really sure if I heard him correctly but it seemed like he said "I like her" in korean but judging from the reaction of people around me, it might not be what he said.
"Hello, I'm Jackson. Nice to meet you. I lived in US for about fifteen years before I moved back here, I'm sure we'll get along just fine," He said suddenly, extending his hands towards me.
I stared at the hand for sometime and then back to the crowd. I could feel like they were all holding their breath to watch what I would do next.
A part of me wanted to ignore his outstretched hands but I know better than to form an enemy on my first day, besides someone in the back seat seemed to be urging me to take his hands though I couldn't really see who it was.
Finally I gave in.
"Nice to meet you Jackson, I'm Cathy."
He held my hands for sometime and smiled.
"We'll have lots of fun this semester," he was saying in Korean to his friends while smiling at me.
I got the feeling that it won't be fun for me.
