Chapter 1Phoenix, AZ October 1973 Doug Lindsey drove aimlessly, not sure where he was going or even why. He told himself he had no reason to be depressed. Things were going well—he had a good job, a decent crash pad and a new car with the best sound system money could buy, at least anything short of a millionaire’s bank roll. It blared now as he cruised down Central Avenue, the main drag of Phoenix, Arizona. The tune screaming out was an older Stones’ song, “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” Doug liked that. He liked all the Stones’ stuff. To hell with Cokie Bender. The guy didn’t have a lick of sense and was such a junky he’d never hold a job or be able to get by without someone to watch out for him. Doug didn’t mind doing grass but that hard stuff was too dangerous. Cokie could just piss up a rope
