Chapter 9Although he wasn’t sure he could, Doug managed to keep it together until he stepped out the door of Jack’s motor home after they shared those awkward words of goodbye. Then he staggered blindly toward the rear of the carnival’s lot. He hadn’t been near the GTO since he’d parked it in the back of the fenced area. Had it only been about twenty hours? Not even that long, but it seemed like a month. A horrible thought hit him. What if the car was damaged, trashed, even burned? Why hadn’t he gone to check last night? As if he’d had a free moment. He broke into a trot, forgetting the fence stood between him and the vehicle. As he burst between two of the semis, he saw it—still shiny and apparently untouched.
