CHAPTER FOUR

JOSHUA

I have been in this house for just a couple of hours but I am already feeling the need to escape from here as far as I can, “ Only a few months and I’m out of here for good ” I try pep - talking myself while wandering around the house. I need to find something useful to do outside the house or I will end up losing it.

When I am about to go out to the gardens I bump into my sister and another girl, a tall blonde with long legs and big boobs that anyone could notice that are fake from a mile away , they are deep in conversation , gossiping I guess, so I try to use that in my benefit so I can scatter without being noticed, but it's useless because the blonde notices me and says in a false surprised tone “ Oh Zara, who is this? ”

“ My brother Joshua ” Zara responds with a hint of annoyance in her voice

“ I didn’t know your brother was back home, ” the blonde says glancing at me with a flirty smile on.

“ He just got back today, are you done questioning me about my family or do you want me to give you a full guide tour to our family tree? ” Zara answers now completely annoyed, which makes the blonde look startle and uncomfortable.

“ Well, it’s your fault because you haven’t introduced me to your beautiful friend ” I barge in trying my best to annoy Zara even further , but I think it was a little too far, since the blonde is now in fully flirty mode, bashing her eyelashes and pushing out her chest to showcase her breast better.

Zara looks at me with disgust before saying “ Kate this is my jackass brother Joshua, Joshua this is my apparently too idiotic to function friend Kate … Happy? ” she says looking at Kate who is now smiling sheepishly.

“ Very ” I respond with a smirk.

Zara rolls her eyes, takes Kate´s arm, and pulls her out of the foyer.

I’m still laughing at both of their faces while I’m walking outside the house but come to a halt when we all hear something break and turn around to see a flower pot shattered to pieces, right next to it is Lucy, she looks mortified and her hands are stretched down like she wanted to catch the flower pot in the air before it broke.

I almost didn’t recognize her, she has changed a lot in these past years, the little girl I remembered its now a full - grown woman with a great figure even for her petite size , her brunette hair is long and falls down her back in waves, she has some sort of braided hairstyle, and I’m just standing here wondering how can a girl wearing jeans and a t - shirt look so damn hot, when her big caramel eyes fall on me and they widen with shock but immediately turn cold, then she just dart her eyes towards Zara who was already saying something about paying for the flower pot, but I wasn’t paying attention at all.

Lucy straightens her back, lifts her chin and I know she’s about to hold her position when I hear her saying “ I already said I’m sorry and that I will pay for it, there is no need for the threads towards my mom’s job, she is not here and it's not her fault ”

Wait, what? I was so absorbed on my own thoughts about how much she has changed that I didn’t even hear Zara threatening her mom’s job.

“ I am not threatening your mom’s job, but if you want a real threat, I could always go to the foundation’s board and have them take away your scholarship if you ever talk back to me again and in my own house! ”

“ Zara, cut it off, ” I tell my sister with a frown.

“ Oh right! I forgot that you have always loved to defend your little pet ” she answers in a mocking tone while Kate laughs.

“ That is enough Zara! ” my mom says while coming out of the house, I guess she must have heard the noise. 

“ You have no right to decide who is worthy of a scholarship and who isn’t, last time I checked I’m still the head of the Foundation, not you ”

Wow. I didn’t see that coming, my mom has always been a very sweet woman, but I guess even a nice lady like her gets tired of a conceited brat like my sister.

I turn around to see Lucy suppressing a smile, and then she starts babbling something about paying for the flowerpot, after that she tries to apologize like a hundred times before my mom cuts her off. - “ Its okay, Lucy darling, you don’t have to pay for that, it was a really old thing and I can assure you it wasn’t even valuable, don´t worry about it ”

“ I am really sorry Mrs. Arlington, ” Lucy says looking at her feet.

“ I already told you it’s okay, I would prefer if you could tell me how little Ben is doing? ” my mom asks her while Zara and Kate left after huffing loudly.

Lucy’s face lightens up immediately at the mention of Ben, she smiles before responding with true joy “ He is in remission now, the doctors said that they couldn't find any traces of cancer in his body, so he is just going to school and playing soccer like any normal 6 years old boy would do ”

“ That is great! ” I say , and I don't even know how or when it happened but I realize that I have a goofy smile on my face, and I know it’s as weird for them as it is for me because they both turn to see me with confusion on their faces. After that Lucy’s smile seems forced and she looks uncomfortable.

“ Well, I better get going, I have to cook dinner tonight, ” she says before giving us a small wave with her hand and rushing towards the cabins.

I watch her walk away and can’t help but feel a hint of regret at how much I hurt her in the past, but for the way she acted in front of me just now, I guess she has already moved on from that, from me, and I can’t ignore the weird discomfort that thought caused me, because I was sure that I had already forgotten about her a long time ago.
