LILAC
“You don’t have to worry. I’m their best option,” Senna answered confidently after I had the chance to talk to her without Nina around. I know that it’s for my safety, and she’s afraid that I’ll try to sneak out again, but she’s been following me wherever I go. She’ll probably follow me to the bathroom if that isn’t creepy enough.
“What do you mean? Blake seems determined to know what was wrong with Cordelia,” I asked again, feeling my anxiety reaching the skies just sitting here and waiting.
It’s been a week since I landed in this place, in an entirely different life and world. Aside from being almost auctioned, shifting into a wolf, which isn’t bad at all but quite terrifying at first, and ultimately, having a crash course on Werewolf 101, everything seems fine. Except Alpha Blake is hellbent on knowing why I lost my memories, and everyone who supposedly knows me is alienated whenever I talk to them.
“They won’t know that you’re a different person inside Cordelia. Not even witches could sense that far. I didn’t even know it was possible for another soul to inhabit a different body without rebirth until now, but your secret is safe with me. Unless they meet another fae, they won’t know. Good luck to them, though, because I haven’t met one for the last ten years.”
I should have felt relieved upon hearing her response, but all I felt was emptiness. “So, what do I do from now on? Can I still go back?”
“Like I said, I don’t know any supernatural creature that could bring you back to your original body. What I am sure of is that there must be a significant reason why you’ve been placed in that body. You can trust me to keep your secret hidden as much as you want, but in my opinion, I don’t think you’ll be back in your original body anymore.”
“Sorry. I would have told you already if I had an idea. Her mind seems clear to me, and she’s not under anyone’s control,” Senna casually lied after being asked by Blake. True to her words, Blake went straight to Senna after seeking help to figure out how I lost my memories. Apparently, they went back to the witches, but they’d never heard of a werewolf having amnesia before.
He didn’t look convinced but dropped the topic after assuring that I was okay. “If you’re alright then I guess that’s all that matters. I’ll have to visit an allied pack so I need to go. Nina will be back shortly.”
He quickly went on his way out of the pack house, but an idea suddenly struck me. I rushed out, following him as fast as I could. “Blake, wait. I mean, Alpha Blake.”
“Why? Is there something wrong?” Blake promptly asked and walked back to me until we were inches away from each other. He cupped my face, checking on me before realizing how close we were.
He must have realized how close we were and backed away. “Sorry. What about it?”
“Can I go with you for the pack visit?”
“Why?” His eyes showed curiosity rather than restriction.
I swallowed the lump in my throat. I wasn’t fond of pop quizzes, and his question felt like one. “Nina said it’s also part of my responsibilities as the white wolf to help my pack in whatever way I could. I won’t do anything funny, but I could go outside if I’ll be with you, right?”
He looked worried but eventually agreed.
“Thank you. I could hug you right now,” I mumbled but realized my own words. I backed away even more, “But I won’t. No hugs.”
Blake cleared his throat, “I suppose it’s not a bad idea. Okay, let’s go.”
“You really changed a lot overnight…”
My heart skipped a beat. Every single time someone says that to me, my mind blanks out for a second.
“Is that a bad thing?” I asked, nervously looking outside the car window in attempt to hide my worry.
“No. I don’t think so. I think you just became more honest with yourself and what you feel. None of us were used to it but it doesn’t mean that it’s bad. Besides, I rarely saw you smile until lately. I’m glad that you do now.”
I glanced at him and he was smiling which was quite endearing. I heard the girls in the pack talking about him during the full moon. They were practically fangirling over Blake and some men named Asher and Ashton. When I asked Nina about those two names, she grimaced and told me not to think about them.
“Can I ask, where are my parents were?” It’s another thing that bothered my mind since last week. They say Cordelia was born in Blake’s pack, so her parents could have been part of the pack, right?
Blake tensed up again. “There was an incident when you were just four years old. My father was the alpha then. Some people tried to take you, and everyone in the pack, including your parents, did everything in their power to save you…”
“But it cost their lives,” I continued what he couldn’t say.
“I’m sorry,” he uttered with worry.
I smiled, “It’s okay. I asked first, anyway. I have to get back on my feet as soon as possible.”
He shook his head, “You’ve been doing that all your life. It’s okay to take it slowly this time.”
My eyes widened after hearing his response. It almost felt like he was talking to the real me. Cordelia and I may have more similarities than I thought.
“You’re exceptional, Cordelia. Not only are you the white wolf, but you’re also a female alpha. You have a lot going on with yourself, and you always have to be on your feet. Let me help you this time.”
“Wait, what’s a female alpha?” There’s another term that I don’t recognize.
Blake was obviously confused by my question, “Nina didn’t tell you? You’re an alpha as well. A normal werewolf isn’t born with the ability to shift. Their wolves would manifest to them later on. Alphas are different. We are born with our wolves, and you are born one. That is why you’ve been living in our territory since you were very young. White wolves are also supposedly physically weaker than regular werewolves but you’re different. You’re very strong.”
“And female alphas are very rare as well…” I mumbled in conclusion.
“Yes. You’re the second female alpha that I know, apart from my mother.”
--
“Cordelia, why are you here?” It was the first question thrown at me. I didn’t think he was the alpha, but Blake was correct that they would be surprised to see me.
I turned to Blake for help, not knowing what to say. He explained my condition before introducing me to Mike, one of their pack’s betas. Come to think of it, I hadn’t met any of our pack’s betas. I should ask Blake later.
“I apologize for my reaction earlier. My alpha has stepped away for a moment, but he’ll be back soon. I’ll inform him beforehand of your condition so he won’t be surprised.” Mike responded, now calm, but suddenly became overly formal with me.
His sudden formality had me smiling awkwardly, “It’s totally fine, and please, you don’t need to be very formal around me.”
There was a sudden change in the wind before we got in. I couldn’t pinpoint what it was, but it felt odd. I looked at everyone, and no one seemed to have noticed it, so I didn’t say anything.
They were casually talking about pack affairs while I quietly scanned the place. It looked a lot like the pack house in our territory but a bit smaller and had a much simpler interior.
“Are you alright?” Blake whispered to me after seeing me turning uncomfortably in my seat. I was about to speak but was suddenly overwhelmed by an intense feeling of danger.
“Blake, I think something bad would happen,” I warned him, but I was too late.
A man came rushing towards us before he could respond. He was injured, and I could already guess why.
“Beta, we’re under attack. It’s the demon’s alpha!”
My heart started beating erratically after hearing who it was. Was this a coincidence, or was the demon alpha after me?
