We ride faster now, absent the herd of horses, a good canter, which I know pleases Ned. We can, if we keep up the pace, skip laying over and I wonder if that’s Jack’s intent, end whatever in hell he thought this was to be. But about halfway to the ranch, Jack pulls up and turns his horse to the river, which has come and gone as we rode along. Without a word, Jack hops down and strides off, likely to piss. I get off Ned and let him wander to the water, joining Jack’s buckskin for a drink. I take off my hat, wipe dirt and sweat from my face, and am so engaged when Jack comes back.
