There’s nothing to be done but get on with living, which I do. Ranch work has a lot of the same to it, mostly time up the canyon with the cattle and horses. We men have to keep an eye on the stock, make sure they’ve got good grass and water, and if not, move them farther up. At times we have to rescue a cow or calf that’s gotten itself bogged down in mud or tangled in brush. This effort requires a tightly drawn rope and a hard-pulling horse to get the creature free. If it’s a calf, it’s crying the whole time, and its mother is likely nearby, keeping an eye on our efforts. There are other ranch chores a man may be asked to do. These include shoeing horses, mending saddles, harnesses, fences, riding the mail to town and picking up what’s come in. The work is endless, and in my present state
