Confession #7
I am not a nice person.
Sure, I’d let Kea squat in my townhouse for the last month. And sure, I’d pay for breakfast with Nadia and Dimpho as the pair interrogated me about my relationship with Aaron. But that didn’t make me a nice person now did it? What really made me a nice person was when Chloe called during breakfast with Dimpho and Nadia – with Aaron’s phone.
It seemed simple. Get medication for Aaron. See, Aaron had caught a cold recently. He was in bed and all I had to do, was to take care of him the entire day. That’s what nice people do. Heck, that’s what girlfriends do? And just as I was about to make up an excuse Dimpho shouted.
“She’ll be there Aaron! Ready to ride that white D.”
With those few vulgar words I had promised to take care of my… Boyfriend…. Ugh, it even sounds gross in my mind. And whilst in the line at our local pharmacy, Dr Gretty motioned me towards his office.
“Dr Gretty…” I faked a smile as I approached the elderly man.
The old prune faced man with greying hair, never held any good news for me. But he seemed to be smiling so I’d give him the benefit of the doubt.
“I have your and Mr Grey’s test results back.” He held out two white envelops as my stomach plummeted.
“Shit.” I muttered under my breath.
“What was that?” The elderly man asked.
“No, nothing. I’m heading over to Aaron’s anyway, so I’ll just give his to him.” I smiled yet again. The man hesitated before nodding his head in agreement.
“All the best Ms Letsie.” His words probably meant no harm at all but they sounded like a double edged sword.
It’s not like STDs are supposed to be taken lightly but he could have not said those exact words. Like he knew something was wrong. You’re probably the one that’s dying, Aaron’s too sexy to die. I knew my subconscious was probably right.
And call me overdramatic but once I parked in Aaron’s driveway with the results – unopened – in one hand and Aaron’s stupidly insignificant flu medication in the other I couldn’t help but think this could be the end of one of my first healthy relationships. Goodbye white boy, I knew it was too good to last.
“Chlo!” I heard Aaron called in a drawled out nasal voice.
One thing people never told me about nursing sick people was just how unattractive they looked. Take Aaron for instance- when healthy- the man is s*x on wheels - hair shiny and bouncing, lips plump and pink, eyes clear as a glass. But Aaron sick was another story, his nose was red and puffy, his hair was dull, his skin as pale as snow. Shame, he’s kinda cute.
“Hey you.” I greet gracelessly as I enter his living room.
He shifted on the couch before spilling a series of coughs. He gives me a weak smile. “Tiger; babe, what are you doing here?”
His large form was spread out on his three-seater sofa. Covered in a blanket while still wearing an old jersey, sweatpants and a pair of socks (he still looks hotter than me), he turned off the tv. Placing my hand over his forehead, I took his temperature – the traditional way – he was scorching.
“I’m here to play doctor-doctor.” I smile sarcastically, only receive a small chuckle from my unusually attractive patient. “Have you eaten?”
He wraps the blanket tighter around his chest. “Yeah, Chloe made me breakfast, cornflakes.”
“You’ve got to be f*****g kidding me. It’s like lunchtime! I’ll make you something.” At this point, I don’t know if I’m annoyed because he didn’t eat or I’m annoyed that I’m still attracted to him. Even when he sneezes loud enough to startle his neighbour.
“You don’t have to do that. I’ll whip something up.” He weakly reaches for my wrist my but fails.
“Yes, I do. Or you’re just gonna sneeze all over the place. And that’s gross. So stay here and try not to contaminate anything.” I ordered as I place his medication and our results on the coffee table.
With the little in Aaron’s kitchen I manage to make enough chicken soup and ginger lemon Rooibos tea to last the night. He was practically salivating at the smell of the soup. He coughed as he eagerly took his first spoonful of the soup.
“What the f**k is in here?” His face contours as though he ate a vineScottlemon.
“Uhm, lots of things but the main ingredients are lots garlic, bit of chill, onion and chicken. Drink the tea, loads of honey, lemon and ginger.” I coax with a sweet smile.
“Is this how you Sepedi people traditionally have it?” He attempted another spoonful.
“I don’t know about other Pedi people. But usually my mom would make me eat an entire clove of garlic. Then she’s heat up ginger beer in a tub, place a towel over the back of my head while I hovered over the boiling ginger beer for at least ten minutes. Then she’d rub Veex on my chest before I went to bed.” I explained as Aaron’s eyebrows rose in shock. I laughed.
“What? Was chicken soup too much effort for you guys?” He joked while sipping on his tea.
“Shut up! I always though chicken soup was a white people thing. My mom’s methods – as rural as they are – worked effectively.” I spoke as I took a spoonful of Aaron’s soup.
“So you just made me this because I’m white?” He looked almost offended.
“Do you want to dunk your head in a tub of boiling ginger beer?” I raised an eyebrow changeling.
“No, I want you to rub my chest.” He faked a pout as I laughed as his childlike pleas.
“Hurry up and eat. I got our test results back and I wanted to check which one of us is dying.” Just as I was about the exit the kitchen, Aaron’s nasal voice spoke.
“We’re both clean, tiger.”
Turning on my heels I saw him slurping up the soup as through it would instantly heal him. “You read them without me?” Although a weight had been lifted off my shoulders, I wanted to read our results together – as a couple.
He wiped his lips with the blanket which draped over his shoulders. “While you were busy, I got bored.” He shrugged indifferently. “But well done to us. No STDs.”
I rolled my eyes. “Well thank you for ruining the surprise.”
He chuckling showing a boyish smile. “So, I guess that means no s*x tonight huh?”
I laughed at his playfulness. “Aaron when was s*x ever on the table? Especially not tonight, my parents are in town remember? ”
He nodded in remembrance as he placed his dishes in the sink. “Yeah, the date that my girlfriend’s going on with another guy while her parents chaperone. “ He spoke bitterly.
“Are you jealous?” I joked as I pinched his pale cheek.
“Nope,” He popped his p annoyingly.” I’ve got you whipped. “ He slowly approached me, with a sly grin.
“Does the flu always give you such a big head, Aaron? You’re so cocky, it’s infuriating.” I rolled my eyes as I walked backwards, colliding my back into the countertop.
Aaron’s eyes still stayed fixated on me, as his body pressed against mine. His aftershave clung onto his skin, surrounding me in the masculine scent. “Do you want me to show you just how cocky I can be?” His tone was husky, rendering me speechless.
His lips hover centimetres above mine and just as I allow myself to become encompassed in the sultry atmosphere created by Aaron. I smelt the garlic on his breath – reminding me of his cold. I place my finger on his lips.
“You’re sick. You’re not showing anyone anything. Now go get your meds. I need to get to the theatre before my shift starts.”
The look of annoyance painted across his feature, it was comical. Nothing like c**k-blocking yourself. I pecked Aaron on the cheek before escaping the tight positon he’d placed us in. Walking towards the couch without taking a second glance as I sway my hips, making the man groan in frustration.
I quickly glance at our open letter. It’s a list of all diseases that one could possible contract through s*x and a column next to each name with a percentage. 00.0% has never looked more attractive in my entire life. The things we’re going to do with that white boy…
“Just make me one promise for tonight?” Aaron asked as he sat next to my on the couch. My thighs instantly clenched as his hand lands on my thigh, giving it a light squeeze.
“Okay.” I whispered meekly, hoping he didn’t notice. But the bastard does and grins devilishly.
“Look as ugly as possible.”
“What?” I began to laugh but the seriousness on his face tells me, to cease. “Sorry, you’re being serious?” He nodded solemnly. I laughed humourlessly.
“What? Don’t you trust me? I just fed you and took care of you for the past few hours. “I was hurt. More offended than hurt. I thought I was a trustworthy person. I thought I was a good person. Your boyfriend doesn’t think so though.
“Come on, Thati. Of course I trust you… But you do have a history-“
“Oh my God. No, you’re using that one time I was someone’s side as the basis of your mistrust? The only reason I told you about that was so that you could trust me!” I groaned in annoyance.
“I didn’t mean –“His sad excuse of an apology was cut off rather sharply by my tongue.
“f**k, I’m gonna go now. I probably look too sexy right now, don’t I Aaron? We wouldn’t want to offend you and your –“
He kissed me.
Mr Trust Issues kissed me and I idiotically kissed him back. Germs and all, I didn’t care. I didn’t even care when my head landed on the back of the couch and his body pressed firmly against mine. I could feel every ridge of this man’s body and just as I was about to do something I’d regret he pulled away.
“I’m sorry. I was being an ass. I-it- it’s just that you’re my girlfriend. You’re mine now. And you’re crazy beautiful. I just don’t want some Shaka Zulu all over you tonight. Especially when I’m too sick to fight him off with my paintbrushes. “ He clowned resulting in a chuckle to surpass my swollen lips.
“Was that our first fight?” My fingers lazily drew patterns across his back. He visibly shivered.
He gave me a soft smile before giving me a chaste kiss. “I guess it was, am I forgiven?”
I bit my lower lip, making him groan in frustration. “I guess you are. I’ll look like an old librarian. f*****g turtle neck, ankle length skirt, the works babe.”
“Imagining you in that, is already giving me a hard on.” He faked a gruff tone. I rolled my eyes.
“You’re such an ass.” I pecked the corner of his lips.
“Yeah, but I’m your ass.”
And after Aaron expressed his separation anxiety and his need for yet another nurse. I’d finally made my way to the theatre. This show was the classic Anti-a*******d hit; Sophia Town. Nothing like a musical reminder, retelling me why dating Aaron is still socially unacceptable.
But once the play had finished and the audience members were filing out singing songs of The Struggle, Thando pulled me to the side.
“Where’s Mr Vanilla? And why do you look so damn ugly?” She’d named him that after hearing about my new relationship status. The name personally made me cringe but it entertained her, so I’d let her have it. Also, I’d allowed myself to look hideous just this once for Aaron.
“Well Aaron, is sick. And I have dinner with my parents after this, so I thought I’d go conservative for them.” I lied but she seemed to eat up the story until her eyebrows rose knowingly.
“Shem, you’re trying to hide him from King Letsie aren’t you?” She answered her own question and when she laughed she only attracted attention to herself. “What’s wrong with him? Too poor? Too small? Or maybe he’s too big?” I didn’t answer and then it clicked.
“Too white?”
“It’s just for now. I need to introduce my parents to the idea of interracial dating.” I spoke in a hushed tone as I saw my parents approach us with a man talking to my father.
“Oh s**t… And they brought you a black knight… This should be interesting. Goodluck Princess.” Thando laughed before leaving me with nothing but my mouth agape.
My parents approached with their usual bouquet of flowers – not tulips like Aaron usually gets me. Oh shut up! My mother spoke with faux enthusiasm as she engulfed me in a tight embrace, while my father spoke in an oddly warm tone.
And then I was introduced to Lesego Mora. I Googled him, his father was founder of platinum smelting factory close to my father’s mine. He was bald with a darker complexion. He wore a suit that reeked of self-importance and money. Not to mention, he was black and rich and theoretically so was I. It was a match made in mineral heaven.
“So what restaurant were you thinking of tonight?” I asked my parents hoping to avoid all conversation with Lesego for the entire evening.
“Actually Naledinyana, your mother and I are a bit tried. But we’d like you to show Lesego around and we’ll see you for breakfast tomorrow morning. “ Plans ruined!
And in the back of my head I knew my parents would pull this stunt. I wasn’t surprised. Of course, I’d have to spend the rest of my night with Mr Moneybags and not Aaron.
The rest of the evening was boring and drawled out. He’d suggested we go to the same restaurant Aaron had taken me to for our first date. It was everything I’d expected, pretentious and expensive. And the conversation… Went something like this;
Lesego : Why’d you move out here? Away from the family?
Me: Just because.
Okay, it wasn’t that harsh but I wasn’t little miss sunshine throughout the entire ordeal. There were a few laughs here and there but I’d been constantly texting Aaron throughout the entire date. He was more than amused by the sudden turn of events.
“Yoh, that phone just keeps beeping. You must be pretty popular at work.” He mused as we approached my car.
“No, it’s actually my boyfriend.” I shrugged indifferently, enjoying his shocked expression.
“B-B-But your mother said you were single?” he stuttered annoyingly.
“Yeah, she was wrong. She actually knows nothing about my life so… This is awkward.” I spoke as my phone went off yet again.
“I’m sorry. You must think, I’m an idiot.” He tried to score a sympathy point with me, it wasn’t working.
“Yeah I do. You should have asked for my number and talked to me instead of a woman who lives in another province. Now look, you’ve travelled all this way for what? Nothing. It’s sad really.” His face fell but I was a bit annoyed with him throughout our dinner.
First he ordered for me, some fancy dish with avocado – which I’m allergic to. Second he tried pass a move at me under the table – I had to move across the table. Third he tried to get my sympathy even though this was both his and my parents fault.
“So listen, how about we act like none of this ever happened. I go back to my boyfriend’s house and you go back to your hotel room?” I forced a final smile before opening my own car door.
“Sure. It was nice meeting you Thati.” He sighed in defeat – still looking for remorse.
“Likewise.” I spoke swiftly before entering my car and driving towards Aaron’s townhouse.
The drive was five minutes longer but reaped great rewards. And my reward was dressed in the same clothes I’d left him in before heading to work today. He looked like he’s just woken up from sleep. He was surprised but his arms draped around my waist, pulling me close. His lips took charge of mine, kissing me as though he was branding me as his own. He tasted of honey and lemon as his tongue thrust against mine. He wrapped my legs around his waist effortlessly before pressing against the door as his hips nested in the V of mine.
“f**k, Tiger. “ Aaron groaned as his lips latched onto my neck. There was a tightening in my abdomen followed by a familiar pressure I’d began to associated with Aaron.
“Aaron, stop.” I spoke meekly, as his teeth nipped at my skin causing us both to groan in satisfaction. “Aaron!”
He snapped back out of his trance, staring at me with eyes laden with desire. His lips rogue pink from mine and his breath uneven. Slowly he set me down on the ground. I was almost at a loss for words, before he asked.
“How did the date go?”
“s**t. My parents ditched us. Texting you was the only fun I had, all night.” I smiled softly. “ And I’m staying the night. I have a feeling Kea’s going to have one of those midnight conversation with some random oak.”
“I can’t promise I’ll keep my hands to myself.” He raised his hands in surrender.
“Cuddling is as far as we go babe. We’re sticking to the ninety day rule.” I brushed past him making my way into his room. I heard him chuckle behind me before following. Confession #7

“I can’t promise I’ll keep my hands to myself.” He raised his hands in surrender.
“Cuddling is as far as we go babe. We’re sticking to the ninety day rule.” I brushed past him making my way into his room. I heard him chuckle behind me before following. Confession #7
The rest of the evening was boring and drawled out. He’d suggested we go to the same restaurant Aaron had taken me to for our first date. It was everything I’d expected, pretentious and expensive. And the conversation… Went something like this;
Lesego : Why’d you move out here?
He gave him a sleepily before I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him towards my lips; ultimately kissing him.
